Chapter 112: He Couldn’t Bear Showing His Pretty Wife to Anyone
On the last night before the workday resumed, the Li family stepped foot in the Xu family’s ancestral home.
Rowan, Bianca, Irene and Old Madam Li reached there at a quarter before seven. Their arrival was welcomed by the Xu family’s main branch. Geoffrey and his family were not invited.
"Good evening," Rowan led the others, a faint smile curling on his lips, "Thank you for having us tonight."
"Come in," Andrian gestured to the inside of the house, wearing his impeccable smiling look, "We’re in-laws now. There’s no need to be too formal, isn’t it?"
Everyone exchanged greetings with the other. The young Irene’s eyes sparkled once she saw the famous actress Evelyn. Her eyeballs almost popped out of their sockets.
Rowan brought gifts to his in-laws. The paper bags and boxes were handed to the helpers.
"Hello, Old Madam Xu," Old Madam Li grinned, seemingly wanting to present her good behavior to the former, "I’m so glad that I can meet you tonight. Our grandchildren’s union is a blessing to our families, isn’t it?"
Old Madam Xu nodded at the elderly woman who was trying to flatter her. With a graceful smile on her wrinkly lips, she politely responded to Old Madam Li.
"I feel the same way, Old Madam Li. Charlene is a good child. She’s the perfect wife for my grandson. I’m hoping for her recovery soon so she can join us."
Calix refrained from laughing at the sight of his grandmother’s perfect acting in front of Leslie’s grandmother.
Old Madam Xu’s countenance didn’t show even the faintest trace of her dislike for Old Madam Li but, her tone possessed a razor-sharp edge. If the latter was not dense, she should be able to hear it.
Whether it was fortunate or not, it seemed like Calix’s guess was correct. Old Madam Li was too thick to catch it.
"Dinner should be ready soon," Calix spoke up. He placed a hand across Old Madam Xu’s back, his eyes traveled to everyone, "Let’s head inside and chat. I’m sure everyone has many things to share."
"Yes, yes, come in."
"Mrs. Li, please come this way."
"Big Sister, what’s your name? Mia wanna know."
While everyone was walking through the main door, Calix slowed down his pace before stopping. Turning around, his gaze found Leslie who stood not far from one of the wood pillars of the porch.
"I’m fine," Leslie put her finger across her lips, signaling to Calix not to talk to her, "Let’s go in. I’ll stay in the dining room too."
Calix pursed his lips before nodding slowly. He resumed walking but, he didn’t pick up his usual speed. Leslie quietly followed him from one side.
The distance between the newlyweds and the others was huge. The latter group had almost reached the dining room but, Calix and Leslie still had a long way to walk.
This was Leslie’s first meeting with Rowan, Bianca and Irene after Calix revealed Sarah’s crime last week. It might be her imagination but, Rowan appeared more downhearted than before while Bianca had a faint air of confidence.
Shaking her head twice, Leslie pushed her thoughts to the back of her mind. She didn’t want to taint her mood after having a great and stress-free holiday.
The two families chatted over dinner. Leslie stayed inside the dining room. She sat on the cabinet placed behind where Calix and his family sat. Rowan and the others of the Li family were on the opposite side.
From where she was, Leslie could perfectly see Old Madam Li, Rowan, Bianca and Irene.
"We’re thinking of holding a wedding for Calix and Charlene. Of course, everything has to wait until she recovers. Charlene might need physical therapies after she wakes up."
Old Madam Xu brought up the matter while having dinner. Her gaze fell on Rowan before eventually it went to Old Madam Li.
"That’s a fantastic idea," Old Madam Li chuckled. Her glimmering eyes shone with desire, "Certainly, our grandchildren need to hold a wedding. My granddaughter Charlene is a beauty. She’s a perfect fit for your handsome grandson."
Calix’s lips twitched. He wondered how Old Madam Li survived in high society until now. Her flattering skill seemed so mediocre, full of shallow words.
Old Madam Xu noticed the subtle change in her second grandson’s expression. Smiling, she threw a question to him.
"What do you think, Calix? Don’t you want to see Charlene in a wedding dress? She’ll be the most beautiful bride. I want to show my new granddaughter-in-law off to everyone."
Calix laughed inwardly, thinking how could his grandmother act the same as Old Madam Li. Her last sentence seemed to invoke another level of materialistic desire in the latter.
A few years ago, Vernon and Lucille’s wedding was big but, not extravagant. The couple refused to splurge more than necessary.
Aside from their family and friends, Vernon’s former comrades in the military also attended the wedding. Only a few business partners were invited.
If possible, Calix wanted a private wedding like his brother’s. But, his grandmother might push him to hold it lavishly because he was the family heir. They also needed to invite more partners for the sake of maintaining connections.
"Grandma, how could you say that?" Calix grinned, already coming up with an excuse, "My wife is so pretty ah. I can’t bear showing her off. What if some other men fall in love with her? If possible, I want to keep her to myself."
Leslie almost choked while Old Madam Xu’s smile stiffened. Vernon and Andrian clammed their mouth shut, trying not to laugh. The others were stunned by Calix’s remarks.
CEO Xu... why did he use that cringy line? He was not the male lead ah.
"Calix, a wedding is important to women," Old Madam Li softened her voice, aware that her grandson-in-law was someone hard to deal with, "Charlene surely wants a grand wedding. She’s the wife of Xu International’s CEO now. You can’t wrong her like that."
Calix’s smile deepened while Leslie clicked her tongue. Old Madam Li’s intention was blatantly obvious.
The elderly woman wanted to boast about the Li family’s connection with the Xu’s. The high society would learn that the Xu family’s heir was her first grandson-in-law.
"Finally, I have a good use for her," said Leslie, who only could be heard by Calix, "If my husband is a random man, she wouldn’t act like that."
Calix pursed his lips, feeling the coldness of Leslie’s voice seeped into his heart. He understood full well the meaning behind her words.
Frowning, Leslie’s gaze on Old Madam Li sharpened.
In over two decades, Charlene had never received any affection she deserved from Old Madam Li. It got worse after her accident. The elderly woman pushed Rowan not to make a fuss and conduct an investigation.
But, now...
How easily she changed her tune.
Leslie’s heart went out to Charlene. She couldn’t imagine what the latter had gone through despite having a similar experience.
Calix’s next response to Old Madam Li pulled Leslie out of her stupor.
"Grandmother-in-law, I know," Calix kept smiling but, it didn’t reach his eyes, "I’ll grant any of Charlene’s wishes. But, I also want her to get used to me as her husband. After all, we got married too hastily."
Old Madam Xu smiled proudly. She stopped playing along with Old Madam Li’s whims.
"Calix is right. The important thing right now is Charlene’s recovery. Let the newlyweds build their relationship first. We can prepare the wedding slowly."
"Haha... yes," Old Madam Li laughed awkwardly, her cheeks had a red tint, "Yes, yes, let’s focus on that first."
Leslie snickered. She was entertained by the show put on by Calix.
