Chapter 19: Life Is Full of Unexpected Sights

Of course, Rhodes was only referring to his theoretical knowledge. When it came to crafting potions by hand, he still needed practice. Successfully brewing a potion demanded precise control over both the materials and one’s magic power. Even the slightest mistake could mess up the whole thing. Rhodes had virtually zero practical experience in that regard.

After leaving the secret chamber, Rhodes stepped outside the cabin, poured a bottle of powdered potion onto the ground, and set it ablaze. A pungent smell quickly drifted through the entire forest on the wind.

Rustle. Rustle.

Bushes trembled. A werewolf, drawn by the scent, wandered into the clearing and stood dazedly in front of the wooden house. Soon, the other werewolves scattered throughout the woods began to gather. Rhodes picked up his cross and cleansed them. Not even their corpses were spared; he offered them all. With the werewolf threat resolved, everything else was easy.

Back in the village, Rhodes returned from the forest, catching the attention of several patrolling militiamen. Their eyes lit up with excitement, and they rushed over like crazed fans.

“Demon Hunter, sir! Did you run into any of those damned werewolves?”

“There should’ve been a lot of them in the forest, right?”

“If you need help, we’re ready!”

Rhodes said nothing. He simply tossed dozens of bloodstained fangs onto the ground. These were the werewolf fangs he had deliberately pulled out before sacrificing their bodies as proof of his hunt.

“The werewolves around the village have all been dealt with.”

The men gawked.

“These fangs… you’d need to kill how many werewolves to collect this many?”

The sight of the pile of bloodied fangs left them stunned. To eliminate every werewolf in the entire forest in a single day, this was indeed the legendary Demon Hunter.

“Gather all the villagers. I have something to announce.” Rhodes spoke slowly.

Excited, the captain hurried off to ring the alarm bell. He looked at Rhodes with deep reverence and admiration.

The werewolf menace that had haunted the village for years was finally gone. The villagers could now sleep in peace. To him, Rhodes was now nothing short of a god. If it weren’t so inappropriate, he’d have built a statue of Rhodes in the church and had the villagers worship him. A true savior!

Ten minutes later, the villagers gathered. The village chief glared at Rhodes with obvious displeasure. Ever since this outsider arrived, the chief had felt like all his authority and respect had been stripped away. But with Rhodes’s strength on full display, he didn’t dare retaliate. Still, he was growing increasingly resentful.

I need to find a way to get this bastard killed by the werewolves. So what if he could kill a werewolf? That didn’t mean he could take on ten. Worst case, it would cost him a bit. He sneered in his heart.

At that moment, several militia members began announcing to the villagers that all the werewolves had been wiped out. At first, no one believed them. Then the captain revealed the pile of bloodied fangs. Once confirmed as genuine, disbelief turned to chaotic excitement. These weren’t fake. Everyone knew werewolf fangs couldn’t be forged.

Now that the scene had been set, Rhodes finally revealed the truth.

“The werewolves in this village were artificially created. I’ve already killed the witch hiding in the forest. And from her, I learned something else. The village chief was her accomplice.”

A wave of gasps swept through the crowd. Some were skeptical. Others, suspicious.

“I knew it! Where did the chief even get all that food? Turns out he was working with the witch!”

“That bastard! He took all our money and lied to us!”

Seeing things turn ugly, the chief tried to run but was surrounded by an angry mob.

“You can’t trust this outsider! He’s lying!”

The chief tried to protest, but the villagers, driven by rage, overwhelmed him before he could finish.

“This… is human nature, huh.”

Rhodes watched quietly. None of the villagers even bothered to verify the claim before unleashing their wrath. Even if the village chief had been innocent, no one would’ve cared. After all, for the past three years, he had gathered all of the villagers’ savings into his own hands. Now that the threat was gone, the one who benefited most naturally became the common enemy.

In the face of personal gain, does morality even matter? This was the dark side of humanity.

Still, Rhodes couldn’t say the chief didn’t deserve it. He had it coming. There was no sympathy to be spared. Rhodes turned and began walking toward the village’s edge.

Although he had just saved everyone, it seemed as though the villagers had already forgotten him. They were all scrambling toward the chief’s house, each trying to claim a share of his “inheritance” faster than the others. Greed distorted their faces and postures. It was an ugly scene.

At that moment, a blonde woman in a long dress blocked Rhodes’s path. Her full, generous figure was especially eye-catching.

Rhodes’s eyes narrowed. The innkeeper’s woman.

“Aren’t you going to join the looting? You might still snag something valuable.” Rhodes asked, his tone subtly amused.

“I just wanted to thank you for saving this village.”

The woman stepped forward and gently hugged Rhodes, planting a soft kiss on his cheek with a grateful smile.

“Yesterday was the happiest day of my life. I’ll never forget you.”

She lifted her skirt and ran off, leaving Rhodes behind. He chuckled and shook his head.

Though life was filled with darkness and cruelty, it was these fleeting, genuine moments that made it worth living. Sadly, some things were never meant to belong to him.

Rhodes’s mind drifted to Little Red Riding Hood, who was resting quietly in his portable space.

Of course… There are exceptions. He smirked.
