"What?!" Gu Luoxin cried out in shock, then realizing that he had been a little too loud, he clamped his mouth shut and looked behind his shoulder nervously.

Young Master Ares’ room remained as spacious and elegant as ever—exactly the same as he had left it. No servants came knocking despite his earlier shout, which gave Gu Luoxin a huge relief. Exhaling softly, he shifted his attention back to the small holographic screen before him that displayed Noir’s sharp and striking visage.

Try as he might, he could not hide the surprise and disbelief in his tone. "The culprit... has been found?!"

Just how long had it been since the time of Prince Kaivia’s death? The sun had not even set, and the case was already... solved?

Gu Luoxin was harboring his own doubt at first, thinking about how in nine out of ten detective series he had watched, the first to be pushed to the forefront was always the scapegoat meant to mislead the investigators and divert their attention away from the real culprit. Maybe the same thing was happening right now too! How else could a national war criminal be captured so quickly? It almost felt like a fraud, a setting, and a trap through and through!

However, when he heard Noir’s brief and concise recount, all his skepticism and suspicion vanished in an instant.

"Oh, so it’s Xiao Shen!" he exclaimed in realization, his eyes shining in awe and absolute faith. "No wonder everything is solved so quickly! Only Xiao Shen could do something like this! So who’s the culprit...?" he wondered curiously.

But before he could get the answer he wanted, Noir seemed to have been summoned, as he clicked his tongue with an annoyed look. He gave a wait signal to the person outside the screen before turning to face Gu Luoxin again.

Gu Luoxin became a little awkward as he belatedly realized that he seemed to be hogging Noir’s precious time when the man should have been kept busy with the ongoing war. "That, Senior... if you’re busy—"

Noir interrupted him before he could say that they should end the call here, "Seems like you’re safe there." It wasn’t an inquiry, but a statement that came from analysis. Gu Luoxin’s background was visible through the screen, and although it was just a glimpse, it wasn’t difficult to discern the opulent decoration around him. Whereas Noir’s background was plain white, and the dim fluorescent light seemed to suggest he was secretly making a call on the emergency stairs. The stark contrast left Gu Luoxin feeling twice as awkward, almost as if he was cowardly hiding here while Noir and his teammates were fighting for their lives out there.

"Yes ah..." Gu Luoxin tugged on his bangs sheepishly. "Compared to you guys, it’s absolutely safe here..."

After all, the flame of war couldn’t have reached the Garuda territory.

Master Grinu and the psycho doctor notwithstanding, this place was practically heaven.

Alas, it wasn’t Noir’s intention to embarrass Gu Luoxin. Never had been. A trace of satisfaction, so subtle that maybe the man himself did not realize, bled into his tone as he nodded, "Stay there. Nian and JJ will think of a way to get you out of there before night falls. It should be the most dangerous period tonight."

Gu Luoxin gulped tensely before nodding.

Three days—that’s the length of this Cycle.

And now it was already the second day, while tomorrow they were going to leave... granted that they were still alive until then. For their one and only task was literally to survive. It was not difficult to infer that something dangerous, or perhaps hellish, would happen once the sun fully sank into the horizon.

The real nightmare would start soon.

Gu Luoxin could not even begin to guess what would happen. Maybe, just maybe... the Garuda territory would soon be unsafe too. That explained why Shen Nianzu was so eager to pick him up before it got dark. It would be better for them to face the challenge onward as a team.

Fiddling with his fingers, Gu Luoxin braced himself to say, "Senior, you—"

At the same time, Noir also said, "I have to go." Pausing, he realized they had both spoken up in unison, asking, "What did you just say?"

"No, no," but Gu Luoxin’s courage had dissipated faster than a drop of water under the glaring midday sun after being interrupted midway. He dared not propose something as willful as wanting to stay by Noir’s side or asking Noir to join them. The emerald-eyed man had always been a loner and preferred going solo in every Cycle they had challenged together, unless the situation compelled him to team up. And Gu Luoxin would hate to be the one to hold him back.

Forcing a cheerful smile, Gu Luoxin gave a small wave to the holographic figure, "Senior, you must stay safe too. Don’t be reckless just because you’re a cyborg now. Your body is not indestructible," he advised with a serious look.

Noir let out a small huff, "I know. Gotta go now."

Even after the call ended and the holographic screen vanished in a flicker, Gu Luoxin remained staring ahead in a daze, still yet to recover from the stunning sight that had just graced his eyes.

Did Noir... just smile?

Although it was faint, Gu Luoxin definitely saw his lips curving up. It was such a small, shallow smile that lasted only for a split second, yet the effect it had on Gu Luoxin’s heart was devastating. And for the love of God, he was so... so infuriatingly handsome, so gorgeous and unreal! How could a human possibly look that good in the first place?!

"Aaaahhhh!!"

Gu Luoxin grabbed a pillow and buried his face into it, muffling his suppressed scream. It was only due to concern of making too much noise that he had not punched the bed and rolled around like a kingkong on steroids.

Seeing Noir’s smile was like a good luck charm for him, injecting him with an infinite boost of strength until the last traces of timidity and nervousness in his heart dissolved without a trace.

So what if tonight was proven to be the most dangerous period? Just bring it on!

With the way he was now, he was confident he could tackle everything no matter how tough it would be!
