Chapter 507: Oh Fuck

The person he singled out was none other than the middle-aged man whose seat had been forcibly robbed by the now deceased beefy player at the start of the tea party.

He was just an average salaryman in real life who had neither money or achievement worth boasting about. Thrown into the Nightmare Cycle, he had been hovering in the bottom rung, barely surviving by the skin of his teeth with the aid of props or, if he was lucky, relying on the Veteran or Elite players to carry the whole Cycle. He was the kind of person you could find everywhere in the world – ordinary, plain, and unremarkable. He lacked the courage and boldness of young people, and his body was already too old and clumsy to partake in thrilling survival games.

Realizing he had been picked, his face went ashen in an instant. "...!"

He hadn’t intended to aim for the main rewards at all; he was simply too unlucky to be nearby when the whole area was locked! His poor mentality was already crumbling upon witnessing the gruesome death of the beefy player, and it was made even worse when the skeletons began to chant excitedly,

"Dare! Dare! Dare!"

"No more truths! We want to play dare!"

"Come on, choose dare, will you?!"

The middle-aged man trembled in his seat, large beads of sweat soaking his pale face. Intense fear and despair permeated his body. He shrunk more and more to himself as though he could make himself invisible this way, yet nothing could truly hide him from the evil, piercing gazes of these damnable creatures.

Until at one point of a time, a string in his mind seemed to snap.

"I QUIT!!!" he hollered at the top of his lungs as he descended into hysteria. "I don’t want to play this game anymore! Just eliminate me, damn it! Let it all be over once and for all! I was supposed to die from the start anywa—" halfway through his frenzied outbursts, his words abruptly ended into a choked sound. A violent spasm coursed through his body as he desperately grasped and clawed at his throat, his mouth gaping open and his eyes bulging in a terrifying manner.

The players watched in horror as the man’s skin and flesh began to fall off his body in bloody chunks before dissipating into smoke once it touched the ground. His eyeballs melted, and his hair fell away in clumps. It was as though he had been doused in a bucket of strong acid; it’s also like seeing an aberrant demon being exorcized with holy water. He did not even have a chance to produce a sound or cry out for help before he transformed into a skeleton.

A standing and living skeleton.

"Hihi... hihihi..." his bone jaws rattled as he clapped in delight. "Fun... let’s have fun together!"

Just as he wished, he was eliminated from the game, but at the same time he was also assimilated in the Cycle.

"Woo-hoo, excellent!"

"What a brilliant performance! Ah, I like this part the most!"

"The tea party is getting better and better each time. As expected of you, Mad Hatter!"

The atmosphere in the skeletons group reached a feverish pitch, suffused with the sweet air of excitement and exuberance. While the players’ side was deathly silent. They had discovered yet another death condition, but their complexion did not improve at all. The tragedy they had witnessed just now was simply too... gore, too merciless, and swift. What had once been a perfectly healthy and normal person was reduced into a nightmare creature in less than two minutes.

The difficulty of this elimination game was comparable to a mid-level Cycle, but the problem was, nearly eighty percent of the players in the Nightmare Cycle were content with low-level Cycles and had not even challenged the next level yet!

Seasoned players who had experienced the Christmas-themed Cycle last year or even the year before that couldn’t help but feel a tinge of confusion. Was it only their imagination or did this year’s Cycle seem more dangerous and troublesome somehow? Meanwhile, those who had participated just this year remained oblivious and simply thought that the Nightmare was too brutal! Hadn’t it stated at the beginning that this was a holiday Cycle? Which part of this game looked like a holiday?!

Gu Luoxin turned his head to the side with one hand firmly covering his mouth, retching.

"Are you alright, Xinxin?" Jin Jiuchi asked with genuine concern. "Would you like some tea?"

Recalling the poisonous concoction that might be inside the tea, Gu Luoxin’s complexion paled even further. "N–No need...!"

"Welcome to the family. We’re so glad to receive you tonight!" Mad Hatter exclaimed in pure delight as he offered a playful and exaggerated salute to the new skeleton. "Now please take a seat, everyone. We will resume the game once more! It’s such a pity that the previous guest decided to withdraw from the game. This gentleman, may I trouble you to choose a new participant?"

"Huh? Alright," the male skeleton agreed readily. He then swept his ghostly gaze across the players, who promptly avoided his line of sight and stared at the table, the desserts, the sky and the forest – anywhere but him.

Shen Nianzu reacted half a beat too late as his attention was diverted by Jin Jiuchi, who abruptly sat upright while sniffing the air like a hound. Before he could ask what the man had discovered, however, he made eye contact with the male skeleton for a split second, sending his little heart skipping a beat.

Oh fuck, was the only thought that crossed his mind as an ominous premonition washed over him. And sure enough, in the next second, the skeleton’s bony finger pointed at him, announcing gleefully,

"—I choose you!"

At the same time, Jin Jiuchi leaned beside his ear and whispered urgently, dropping yet another bomb that threw his mind into utter disarray, "Nian’er, Nian’er, I can smell it! The red zone is coming! It’s going to reach us in, like, seconds! Does it mean we have to leave right now? Can I bring some desserts with me? Pretty please??"
