Chapter 506: Nemesis

The players stared at her with varying degrees of shock, disbelief, and incredulity.

They simply found it hard to believe how this woman, who had seemed like a proper and upright person, turned out to be hiding such a vicious side. Didn’t she state that she was only five at the time of the incident? Heavens, which five-year-old child would think of murdering her sister due to jealousy?!

What an evil and ruthless person! They all thought at the same time.

Before Mad Hatter could give a response, however, someone else beat him to it.

"You beast...!"

Ying shot up to her feet, her sharp features contorting in rage. The corners of her eyes reddened as she burst out, "Are you still a human?! How could you even think of doing something like that?! She was your sister – blood-related sister, for God’s sake! Did you not feel the slightest ounce of guilt and remorse?!" her voice even cracked in the end.

The sudden development of events caught everyone off guard, particularly the players who could not figure out why Ying, who had kept to herself from the start, suddenly lost control of her emotions. Did they know each other or something?

While others remained unaware, only the members of SJG Team – and perhaps Noir – knew the truth.

Ying had lost her twin brother in the Cycle. Her brother, too, was born with a fragile health, yet not even once had she thought of him as an inconvenience. Even in the deadly Cycle where her brother proved to be a fatal liability, she had carried him on her back and, step by step, crawled her way to the mountain summit. Yet in the end, she still failed to save him. This incident had always been an irremovable thorn in her heart; it had even nearly caused her to perish in the previous Cycle. Hence when she encountered this female player, who had killed her sister with her own hands and even used her death as a bargaining chip to ensure her own survival, she almost lost it.

It was unbearable – too unbearable. This feeling was akin to seeing someone trampling heartlessly on what she had treasured the most.

Were it not for a shred of rationality holding her back, she would have struck and made the other person wish for death!

The female player had cowered at first, for anyone who saw Ying and the way she carried herself could tell that she was not to be messed with, but upon seeing how Ying dared not take an action and ruined the tea party, she quickly regained her composure and straightened up.

"Guilt? Remorse?" she repeated with a cold sneer tugging at the corners of her lips. "Why should I? If she had lived, she would have continued to be a burden to everyone and I would have suffered for years to come! So what’s wrong with taking matters into my own hands? This player, you know nothing about me, so what gives you the right to judge the right and wrong? She was going to die either way, so what’s the harm in me giving her a little push?"

"You—!" Ying’s body trembled in sheer rage, her knuckles cracking from how hard she was clenching her fists.

Just as she was teetering on the edge of madness, Gu Luoxin seated beside her, who had received a signal from his leader, promptly grabbed her wrist to hold her back.

"Don’t," Gu Luoxin whispered in a low voice, his voice shaking slightly as he still had not recovered from the sickening story he’d just heard. "Don’t do it... she’s not worth it."

Ying abruptly stilled, her chest rising and falling due to the emotional upheaval. Squeezing her eyes shut, she drew in deep, measured breaths and when she opened them again, the fiery redness in her gaze had faded and her mask of composure was fixed in place once more. Though her tense body showed that she was still boiling over with rage, her swift gain of control was nothing short of remarkable.

With an icy glance, she threatened, her tone dripping with hostility, "Make sure to avoid me in the future... if you manage to survive this."

Otherwise she might not be able to control herself for the second time.

This kind of person was simply her nemesis – it’s either you die or I die.

"Hmph," the female player turned her head away with a disdainful harrumph, though her clenched fists betrayed her current turmoil, proving that she wasn’t as nonchalant as she portrayed herself to be.

The minor interlude ended, and Mad Hatter, the host of the party, finally had a chance to interject.

He clapped loudly once, his bones rattling, then twice and thrice, until he broke out into a mad applause. "Bravo!" he cried out in a heartfelt manner. "The secret you have just shared is simply marvelous and... staggering! It’s unlike anything I’ve heard before. You nearly blew my mind away!"

His words were akin to a fuse that ignited the whole atmosphere. In the next second, loud cheers, whistles and applause echoed throughout the silent forest as the guest skeletons reveled in excitement, laughing and marveling.

"Goodness, I’ve never heard something so amazing in ages!"

"Who could have guessed that a guest from afar could be so interesting? And here I thought they were all timid and shy!"

"I like your boldness, Little Missy!" the male skeleton opposite the female player even praised her directly to the face, to which she responded with a small, stiff smile. Next, Mad Hatter had her select the next volunteer from the skeleton group, and she casually gestured at the creature in front of her who had just uttered the praise. The round proceeded smoothly, as the game wasn’t a challenge to the skeletons at all. On the contrary, the others appeared to be envious of the chosen one.

In no time at all, the game proceeded to the third round.

"Now, let’s have our guest pick the next participant of the game!"

With Mad Hatter’s prompt, the barely relaxed atmosphere turned rigid once more, tension and restlessness palpable in the air. The male skeleton did not make them wait long, as his bony index finger decisively pointed toward a certain direction.

"You!" he remarked with a hearty laughter, though it sounded evil to the players’ ears for some reason. "You’ve been stealing glances at me for a while. You must have been dying to join the fun, haven’t you, buddy?"
