Chapter 421: The Best Day!
Chapter 421: The Best Day!
Gu Luoxin wore an expression as if he had nothing left to live for. Ah ah ah! He clutched his misbehaving hand, so infuriated that he almost wanted to bite it off. Why? Why did you always embarrass yourself in front of him?!
Left with no other choice, he could only brace himself and dialed the number once more, his complexion ashen. The call connected almost immediately, and this time Gu Luoxin took the initiative to speak before the other person could even utter his greeting, "Senior, it’s me, Gu Luoxin..."
His tone was listless, tentative and cautious, like a timid little mouse hanging limply in the mouth of a cat, after inadvertently poking the said cat awake from its peaceful nap.
"Mn," Noir let out a non-committal hum, then, "Did you receive the ticket?"
"N–No, not yet..." Gu Luoxin subconsciously shook his head even though Noir couldn’t see him. Walking through the bustling hallway with the phone pressed tightly to his ear, he could feel his cheeks heat up in embarrassment. He managed weakly, "I... I hit your number by accident..." Fearing that the other person wouldn’t believe him, he added in a haste, "I swear it’s not on purpose! I... I actually wanted to call my friend, I wanted to tell him some good news, but my fingers slipped and..."
It wasn’t until he blurted out those words that he realized how superfluous it was. Damn it, why did it sound more dubious the more he clarified? It seemed as if he really had something to hide! What ’my finger slipped’? Even he found his own words hard to believe!
But he was really telling the truth ahhh! QAQ
When he received nothing but silence from the other side, Gu Luoxin’s heart continued to sink with dread and mortification, so much that he could feel his toes curling up inside his shoes.
He was ready to bid goodbye and end the call when Noir’s words successfully caused him to choke on those words,
"What good news?"
"Cough—cough—" Gu Luoxin coughed so hard that he once again drew strange looks from others, but alas, his whole attention was focused on his phone right now. D–Did he hear it right? Noir... was taking the initiative to carry on a conversation with him? That Noir? Still reeling in shock and astonishment, Gu Luoxin replied on auto-pilot, "Oh, I... I got the role for the production ’Into the Woods’. Senior must know it, considering that it’s held annually by our college..."
"Ah," Noir exclaimed softly. "That."
"Yes, that," Gu Luoxin chuckled, his entire person radiating awkwardness from head to toe. He had thought that Noir would end the call here, yet the man defied his expectations once more.
"What role?"
Gu Luoxin chewed on his bottom lip. During the phone call, he had unknowingly walked outside the department building. Spotting an empty bench nearby, he rushed there and settled himself on it. For some reason, talking with Noir was draining all of his focus and energy, and he’d better sit down lest he tripped and made another joke out of himself.
"It’s not that special..." he cleared his throat. "Just a minor role with a few lines."
Clearly, he had wanted to call Shang Hao to brag to the ninth heaven, to let his childhood buddy know how talented and awesome he was. But when it came to Noir, he became all humble and modest because come on, who would be crazy enough to brag about themselves in front of Great God Noir – the real and authentic prodigy?!
He was not that brain-dead!
"Oh?" Noir prompted.
"I will be Cinderella’s stepmother’s steward," he recounted, his eyes curving into crescents. "You know Cinderella, right, Senior? That classic fairy tale? Well, I am not sure how I landed the role, but I guess I got lucky hehe..." he fiddled with the strap of his backpack sheepishly.
"Luck can only carry you so far," Noir stated with nary a fluctuation in his tone, as if to rebuke his previous statement. "The most important thing is hard work and persistence. Congratulations."
Gu Luoxin’s eyes flew as wide as saucers, an inaudible gasp escaping his lips. Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God, Noir just offered him congratulations—!
Perhaps his ear had really malfunctioned due to the erratic pounding of his heart, but he seemed to detect a sliver of gentleness in Noir’s voice as he uttered those words.
Gu Luoxin’s face immediately went ablaze, causing him to blush from head to toe. C–Crazy, he discreetly rubbed his tingling and burning ear while screaming like a banshee inside his heart. This was seriously crazy! The happiness must have gotten to his head, giving him auditory hallucinations!
"T–Thank you, Senior..." was all he could squeak out through his tightening throat.
This time, Noir no longer gave him another heart attack and ended the call with a curt ’see you around’, but it was enough to make Gu Luoxin beside himself with joy. Though the call had lasted for less than ten minutes, Gu Luoxin found himself slightly breathless when it ended.
He clutched the phone tightly in his hand and cupped his cheeks, squeezing his eyes shut and kicking his legs like a madman.
Oh gosh, today ought to be the best day of his life!
"That’s right!" He snapped back to his senses with a gasp. "I should give Shang Hao a call and tell him the good news..." he unlocked his phone, but upon seeing Noir’s contact on the topmost of his recent outgoing calls, his desire to brag suddenly dissipated quicker than morning mist under the blazing sun.
Sigh, forget it. Hadn’t he told himself that he must distance himself from Shang Hao? Moreover, to have his ears, that had been graced by Noir’s deep and velvety voice, tainted with Shang Hao’s shrieks seemed like blasphemy.
Shaking his head, Gu Luoxin gave up on calling Shang Hao and merely sent a message to the SJG team’s group chat, informing his two teammates about him obtaining the role and how he wouldn’t be able to hang out as often on weekends as he needed to go through intense and rigorous training. He was ready to leave after doing that when his phone vibrated in his hand.
Oh? A new reply so fast? Was it Da Shen, by any chance?
Gu Luoxin checked his phone while grinning from ear-to-ear, but he ended up frozen in place upon seeing what the notification was about, his complexion turning blanched.
It was a notification from a pitch black thumbnail – the Nightmare App.
The ticket for his next Cycle was finally here.
