Chapter 420: Official Role

H–How did things turn out like this?

Was Noir not the one who said with his own mouth how Gu Luoxin would definitely pass his personal task? Then why... why would he want to come along as well? Wasn’t he being a little too contradictory?!

This time, no matter how hard Gu Luoxin tried to stop himself, his brain couldn’t help but analyze and dissect each word Noir had uttered, down to the subtlest shift of his expression and his micro body language, trying to discern the true intentions hidden beneath that deadpan face.

Why did Noir want to come with him? Was it because he wanted to earn more points and rewards, and the fastest and easiest method to achieve it was to join Shen Nianzu’s team and become a salted fish?

That was possible. But somehow Gu Luoxin could tell that Noir was not such a cunning and calculative person. If he wanted to ride along with Shen Nianzu, then why didn’t he just join the organization when Shen Nianzu proposed it to him? Why bother to reject? Or was there a more personal motive, wherein he might need Gu Luoxin’s help?

That was also possible, Gu Luoxin nodded sagely. That was the most reasonable explanation he could come up with. Surely, Noir had some personal business inside the Cycle and he required Gu Luoxin’s, this little hapless player’s help.

As unbelievable and absurd it sounded – because come on, who did Gu Luoxin think he was to be able to offer help to the Great God Noir? – it was still far more reasonable than thinking that Noir was w-w-worried about him!

No, impossible! Noir – such an aloof, detached and devil-may-care Noir – worrying about Gu Luoxin? Psssh, why would he? It’s not like they had something going on between them!

...or was there?

"...xin..."

"...luoxin!"

"Student Gu Luoxin!"

"Ah?" Gu Luoxin snapped his head up in surprise, noticing that all eyes in the classroom were fixated on him, brimming with amusement, laughter and a hint of schadenfreude.

"Did you even hear what I said?" The female professor in her forties twisted her lips in the blend of disapproval and mirth. "Dare to daydream in my class? I think you don’t want your role anymore!"

Upon hearing the word ’role’, Gu Luoxin’s body moved faster than his brain as he sprang to his feet, shouting, "I want! I want! Ma’am, please don’t take away my role!"

The dream of every musical theater student was to perform in a major production one day. However, with the industry’s increasingly fierce and cutthroat competition, such an opportunity was extremely rare, and it could be considered life-changing.

In Gu Luoxin’s case, his experience had only been limited to local theater where he took on ensemble roles, participating in group scenes, and background roles to enhance the overall production.

Each role was invaluable and Gu Luoxin wasn’t picky, for it was his passion to stand on the stage and perform, capturing the hearts of thousands in the audience.

Only after he blurted out those words to the professor did he come back to his senses.

Hold on, what role did I have in the first place?

"Alright," the professor nodded. "Come to my office after class. I will send you the schedule for the training."

Gu Luoxin remained in a muddled and dumbfounded state, until the classmate beside him nudged him with an elbow and whistled, "Damn, you’re going to become a big star now!"

Despite feeling utterly flabbergasted within, Gu Luoxin reflexively put on a humble smile and released a dry laugh, "You flatter me, you flatter me."

Inwardly, he was screaming— can anyone tell me what’s going on?!

Fortunately, the class ended shortly after. Gu Luoxin scrambled to gather his belongings, slung his backpack over his shoulder and followed his professor, desperately trying to ignore the scorching gazes of his classmates behind his back.

"Sit," the professor instructed once they entered the office, and Gu Luoxin obeyed like a good and obedient student he was.

The next half an hour slipped by in a haze, and when Gu Luoxin emerged from the office, his entire person was dazed and disoriented, like someone not fully awakened from a vivid dream. Tentatively, he moved to pinch his arm and— ouch! The sharp sting of pain almost brought tears to his eyes. He sucked in a breath, his heart pounding faster and faster in his chest.

This... this was not a dream.

He, Gu Luoxin, had finally secured an official role!

’Into the Woods’ was an annual production of their college, set to be performed throughout the whole city during spring. It was a musical that intertwined several classic fairy tales, including Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rapunzel.

Almost all students in their department had participated in the audition when it was opened a few months ago, Gu Luoxin included.

However, at that time, he had just encountered the Nightmare Cycle. His entire life had been turned upside down, and he wasn’t even certain whether he would still be alive and breathing next week, so how could he still have the heart to think about his performance? As such, the entire audition passed by in a blur, and after that, he completely threw this matter to the graveyard of his mind as he had to focus on surviving in the next Cycle.

Who could have guessed that... he... he would successfully pass the audition!

Even though it was only a minor role, he would have his own lines! What did it mean? It meant that during the moments when he sang his lines, all eyes in the audience would be focused on him and him alone! Who knows, perhaps some famous producer would notice his hidden talent and recruit him into a major production!

As the realization finally settled into Gu Luoxin’s mind, he let out a high-pitched sound akin to a boiling kettle and jumped in place, pumping his fists into the air. He did not even care that his weird antics received odd looks from passersby, too absorbed in the thrill of the moment.

He, Gu Luoxin, would soon perform on a stage with his own lines!

Unable to contain his excitement, Gu Luoxin tremblingly searched for his phone, eager to share the news with someone else. Of course, the first person that came to his mind was his best friend and childhood buddy whom he had been through thick and thin with, Shang Hao. He could almost imagine Shang Hao’s reaction upon receiving the news. He would definitely be as ecstatic as Gu Luoxin, if not more!

Alas, it was unknown what kind of God or Devil was at play. Gu Luoxin swore he really wanted to dial Shang Hao’s number, but his finger slipped, and he ended up calling another number.

The large character ’Senior’ with cat paws emoji loomed large before Gu Luoxin’s eyes, almost causing him to hurl the phone away as if it was a hot potato.

AHHHH! WHAT HAVE YOU DONE, YOU DUMB XINXIN?!!

Why did it have to be Noir, of all people?!

End the call... that’s right, he had to end the call right now and send a text, apologizing that his fingers had slipped and he had called by mistake!

Panicked, Gu Luoxin frantically scrambled to secure the phone with his clammy and trembling fingers, but just as his finger hovered above the red button, the call connected seamlessly with a click, and Noir’s low and velvety voice drifted out,

"Who’s this?"

At the sound of that magnetic voice, Gu Luoxin’s fingers shook and he bumped into the red button, ending the call.

Gu Luoxin: "...!"

Someone, please chop my disobedient fingers off!!!
