Chapter 376: Not Allowed!

"Excuse me!"

"Sorry, please let me through!"

Shen Nianzu weaved through the people crowding in the hallway as he rushed to the emergency stairs, too impatient to take the lift. Either way, his physique was now strong enough to climb even the highest mountain, let alone a few flights of stairs. And sure enough, as he reached the highest floor, not a single bead of sweat graced his brow.

The commotion intensified on this floor as people huddled around the stairwell leading to the rooftop, craning their necks to inspect what was going on. The security guards were working diligently to thwart their advance, but Shen Nianzu effortlessly slipped through their ranks like a slippery eel.

"Hey! Stop right there—!"

He sprinted up the short flight of stairs with lightning speed, evading the guards who were scrambling after him. Bursting through the door, he was greeted by the sight of a familiar back standing perilously on the edge of the rooftop, beyond the safety fence. The first rays of sunshine broke through the distant line of horizon, painting a burst of dazzling gold against the dark blue and purple sky. The wind tousled his dark hair and the hems of his sleeves, making it seem as though he was going to be carried away at any moment.

"Jin Jiuchi!" Shen Nianzu’s voice nearly cracked as he cried out the silly husky’s name, his heart almost leaping out of his throat. "You... what the fuck are you doing there?!"

From his peripheral vision, he spotted a few doctors and nurses hovering around Jin Jiuchi, no doubt trying to talk him out of the ’impulsive deed’ he was going to commit. It was too bad that the aforementioned man paid them no heed, acting as though he couldn’t hear them at all – until Shen Nianzu arrived, that was.

He tilted his head sideways, and Shen Nianzu was stunned when he caught sight of the man’s different colored eyes – one silver while the other pitch black – looking even more profound and deep under the glow of the rising sun. Those captivating eyes curved into crescents as a huge grin spread across his face.

"Nian’er, you’re here! Do you want to join me?!"

"Join you, my ass!" Shen Nianzu couldn’t help but curse. "Can’t you see the chaos you’re causing?!"

As though echoing his words, loud sirens blared as two police cars screeched to a halt right in front of the hospital, followed closely by a red firefighter truck. The latter swiftly worked to spread the air mattress, while the former shouted through a microphone, "The person upstairs, calm down and step away from the edge!"

"Huh?" Jin Jiuchi peered down at the crowd gathered beneath him, a mix of amusement and confusion playing on his features. "Why are there so many people all of a sudden? Wait, are they talking to me?"

Shen Nianzu resisted the urge to strangle the dumb husky to death right there and then. He had to remind himself that this was the person he had been waiting for the past five days— no, that’s not right. If he had to count from the time when they were still inside the Cycle, Shen Nianzu had been waiting for much, much longer than that. He might be annoying at times, but well... he wouldn’t be Jin Jiuchi if he didn’t.

Taking a deep breath, Shen Nianzu attempted to regain his bearings as he gave a signal to the others that he had the situation under control.

Slowly, he made his way toward Jin Jiuchi, asking, "What are you doing here?" His tone was softer, almost casual this time as though they were chatting on a random street instead of the hospital rooftop, with the eyes of hundreds on them.

He couldn’t help but study the man’s appearance. Was it because of the heterochromia eyes that Shen Nianzu felt like something seemed different about him?

He couldn’t tell for certain, at least now.

At his question, Jin Jiuchi shifted his gaze back to the horizon, squinting his eyes against the breathtaking scenery of the rising sun. There was a distant, almost wistful look on his face as he replied, "Hmm, just wanted to see the sky out of nowhere. It’s so strange... I feel like I haven’t seen this for a long time. Isn’t it beautiful, Nian’er?"

Shen Nianzu had been too focused on the man that he did not take into account the scenery around them, and when he did, he had to admit that Jin Jiuchi’s words were correct. Standing on one of the tallest buildings in the city, they were given the bird view of the waking city, bathed in the majestic golden glow. In a matter of minutes, the streets would be full of people and cars going about their own lives.

All of a sudden, Shen Nianzu recalled the tiny black-eyed Jin Jiuchi who asked him whether the sky would indeed switch to orange, and a small lump formed in his throat. He also remembered how he had promised himself that he would bring the twins away and show them the ever-changing sky throughout the day.

It seemed like he could begin to fulfill that promise now.

"It is beautiful," Shen Nianzu managed to say, his voice a little hoarse. Clearing his throat, he reminded himself not to be distracted and stretched out a hand to Jin Jiuchi. "But you can still see the sky through the window in your room. Why don’t you step away from there first?" Even though he knew that Jin Jiuchi had no intention of jumping, he couldn’t control the way his heart lurched when he noticed that Jin Jiuchi was literally standing on the edge. One misstep, and he would plummet to the ground!

Jin Jiuchi’s gaze shifted from Shen Nianzu’s hand to his face, then the sky, clearly reluctant to move away.

Noticing that, Shen Nianzu let out a little snort and decided to pull out another trick from his sleeves – one he knew would certainly work on this silly husky. "I feel like I haven’t touched and hugged you for so long. Are you going to leave me hanging?"

Jin Jiuchi froze in surprise, but Shen Nianzu gave him no time to react as he began to turn away. "Then I will just go—"

"Nian’er!"

A pair of arms wrapped around him from behind, preventing him from taking another step. Muffled cries and shrieks resounded all around them as the medical staff stared at them – or to be exact Jin Jiuchi – with their eyes round in shock and disbelief. To be fair, Shen Nianzu was no less astounded. It had only been... what? Less than a second? And Jin Jiuchi, who had clearly been standing on the other side of the fence, abruptly appeared behind him! Goodness, he did not just teleport, did he?!

Shen Nianzu was about to speak, when Jin Jiuchi’s muscular arms tightened around him and what came out of his mouth was a tiny breathless gasp. This damned husky... did he want to suffocate him to death?!

Shen Nianzu tried to wiggle his way out to no avail, "You... let go first!"

"No, I won’t." Jin Jiuchi bent down and nuzzled his face into the crook of Shen Nianzu’s shoulder, burying his nose into the silken silver hair and taking a deep satisfying inhale. "Nian’er, I’m not going to leave you hanging. I will never, so... don’t walk away from me, okay? You are not allowed to leave!" The last few words were spoken through gritted teeth, laced with a dark sense of possessiveness.

As expected, he had really changed. The silly Jin Jiuchi he knew would never speak in such a grim tone, and the unexpected revelation caused Shen Nianzu’s heart to skip a beat.

After a moment’s pause, Shen Nianzu finally resigned to his fate, ceasing his struggles and leaning into the warmth of Jin Jiuchi’s chest. "Foolish..." he murmured softly. "Why would I even leave?"
