Chapter 217: Wedding Plans
Elena’s smile faltered for a moment, and she clasped her hands tightly in her lap. "I would love for them to get married soon," she began, her voice tinged with worry. "But Ricardo needs to go abroad for surgery first."
Her words settled over the room like a heavy blanket, and the lively atmosphere from earlier was quickly replaced by silence. Zinnia’s face instantly mirrored her concern, her brows knitting together as she turned to her mother. "Surgery? Why didn’t you tell me sooner?" she asked, her voice rising slightly, a mix of worry and frustration.
Ricardo reached over to place a comforting hand on her shoulder. "It’s nothing to worry about, sweetheart," he said in his usual calm tone. "The doctor says I’m fine for now, but surgery is necessary for a complete recovery. We didn’t want to alarm you until everything was finalized."
Samuel, who had been listening attentively, leaned forward, his expression growing serious. "When are you leaving?"
"The day after tomorrow," Elena answered softly. Her voice wavered, but she quickly steadied herself. "We’ll need to stay abroad for a while. The recovery period might take several weeks, possibly even months."
Steven frowned slightly, his business-minded brain already calculating the complications. "That certainly makes things more challenging," he said, his voice tinged with thoughtfulness. "But health comes first, of course."
Zinnia’s voice was firm despite the concern evident in her tone. "We’ll wait until you’re back, Dad. The wedding can happen anytime, but your health is more important. That comes first, no matter what."
Elena’s eyes grew misty as she reached out to hold Zinnia’s hand. "You’re a good daughter, Zinnia. But I don’t want you to delay your happiness for us," she said, her voice thick with emotion. "There must be a way to balance everything. I know how important this step is for you and Samuel."
Samuel, who had been quiet until now, spoke up. His voice cut through the tension, measured and calm. "We could have a small ceremony first," he suggested. "Something intimate, just for the families. Then, when Mr. Lopez has fully recovered, we can plan a larger celebration."
Ricardo smiled faintly at Samuel’s suggestion, nodding in agreement. "That’s a reasonable compromise," he said. "It ensures everyone’s priorities are respected."
Elena hesitated, her gaze flickering between Samuel and Zinnia, before nodding. "If that’s what you both want, we’ll support it," she said, her voice soft but resolute.
Steven clapped his hands lightly, breaking the somber mood. "Well, it seems we have a plan," he said, his tone more upbeat. "Let’s finalize the details before the surgery. And Samuel," he added, a teasing smile playing on his lips, "make sure this proposal of yours isn’t just all talk. Zinnia deserves action."
Samuel returned his father’s smile with a faint smirk. "Trust me, Father," he said confidently. "This time, I’ll get it right."
Zinnia smiled at him, her fingers lightly brushing his hand as if to say she believed in him. For a brief moment, the weight of the situation lifted, and the room seemed to regain some of its earlier warmth.
As the conversation continued, Samuel spoke up again, his tone steady with newfound determination. "Since Mom and Dad will be going abroad soon," he began, "I think we should hold the ceremony there. That way, we can be close to Dad during his recovery and still move forward with the wedding plans."
Steven raised an eyebrow, visibly impressed by his son’s pragmatic approach. "That’s a thoughtful idea, Samuel," he said. "It’s efficient and shows consideration for Ricardo’s health. I approve."
Elena’s eyes lit up as she processed the suggestion. "Oh, that’s a wonderful idea!" she exclaimed, her enthusiasm evident. "The country we’re going to is where Zinnia studied in high school and college. She knows the area well and can show you around, Samuel."
Samuel glanced at Zinnia, a small smile tugging at his lips. "That sounds perfect," he said. "It’ll give us a chance to spend more time together and create memories in a place that means a lot to you."
Elena’s excitement only grew. "Why not take your prenuptial photos there as well?" she suggested. "There are so many beautiful locations—parks, old architecture, beaches. It would be perfect!"
Zinnia forced a smile, her fingers tightening slightly around the hem of her dress. Her mother’s words struck a chord, bringing a flood of memories she wasn’t sure she wanted to confront. That country wasn’t just where she studied; it was also where she met James. Each street, every corner, was tied to moments she shared with him—moments she had buried deep within her heart.
She lowered her gaze for a brief moment, forcing herself to nod. "That’s a good idea, Mom," she said softly. "It makes sense to take the photos there."
Samuel noticed her hesitation but chose not to comment, deciding to bring it up privately later. Instead, he reached out and gently took her hand. "If you’re okay with it, Zia," he said, "then we’ll go with it and make the arrangements. But if you’re not comfortable, that’s okay too—I’ll go with whatever you prefer."
Samuel had actually forgotten that person’s connection to that place, and almost everyone except Zinnia remembered it. He hadn’t meant to make Zinnia feel uncomfortable. It was only now, as he saw her hesitation, that he realized the impact of his suggestion.
Elena clapped her hands together, visibly relieved. "I’m so glad we could figure this out," she said, her voice brimming with emotion. "This way, everything feels more connected. It’s as though this Chapter of our lives is coming full circle."
Zinnia managed a small smile, trying to focus on her mother’s joy rather than her own inner turmoil. "I’ll make a list of places we can visit while we’re there," she said softly. "There are some beautiful spots I’d love to show you, Samuel."
Samuel squeezed her hand gently. "I’m looking forward to it," he said, his tone sincere.
Inside, Zinnia felt a mixture of emotions. Perhaps it wasn’t such a bad idea to return. Revisiting those places might give her the closure she needed, a chance to finally let go of James and the lingering memories that tied her to him. This time, she would focus on Samuel—on their future together.
"Then it’s settled," Steven said, standing up and smoothing his jacket. "We’ll plan everything accordingly. Elena, Ricardo, and I will handle the logistics for the ceremony. You two just focus on preparing yourselves for the next steps."
