Chapter 61: Chapter 60 Speak Frankly (Asking for Likes in Ten Thousands)

Feng Ying directly pulled Dong Meihua aside, "We are the closest, you can talk to me about anything on your mind. You’ve been somewhat distant from everyone recently."

Dong Meihua said, "You all like Xia Xiao, not me."

Everyone was speechless, and Yang Xuehua said, "Xia Xiao is the youngest, it’s only right that we all look after her a bit."

"It’s not that, it’s just that you all favor her. And Sister Xuehua, you always speak for Xia Xiao. Sister Aihua does too. You all like Xia Xiao." Dong Meihua glanced at Xia Xiao as she spoke.

"Have you ever thought about why everyone likes Xia Xiao and not you?" Sun Yuhua voiced.

"Look, even Sister Yuhua says she likes Xia Xiao," Dong Meihua said as if she had found a reason.

"I do like Xia Xiao more than you. It’s a fact that Xia Xiao is more diligent. Even though she works slowly, she’s thorough and clean." Sun Yuhua said this and looked at Dong Meihua, "You, on the other hand, come back from work and don’t bother to wash your socks frequently, leaving them for days, and they start to smell in the dorm. How do you expect me to like you?"

Sun Yuhua always spoke bluntly. At these words, Dong Meihua’s face turned red.

Sun Yuhua continued, "Sometimes you’re too lazy to wash your clothes and Feng Ying washes them for you. Isn’t she being good to you?"

"Enough, let’s not talk about this," Wang Aihua interjected. "Meihua, we share a dormitory, we are a small community. In a community, we should take care of each other, help each other. If you have grievances you can speak up, but there’s no need for this kind of attitude."

"The team leader said not to form cliques," Dong Meihua retorted.

Wang Aihua took a deep breath, "We haven’t harmed others, nor targeted anyone. We are all girls in our dorm, of similar age. Is it not good to have close relationships and be like sisters in private?"

Dong Meihua nodded, then Wang Aihua said, "That settles it."

"Then why don’t you like Xia Xiao, besides feeling that we’re favoring her, what else is there?" Wang Aihua continued to ask.

Xia Xiao also looked at Dong Meihua, sensing there were other reasons when she heard Dong Meihua say, "Zheng Xianghong treats Xia Xiao very well, but Li Shengmei isn’t as nice to me as she appears on the surface. And He Hongjun even asked about Xia Xiao to me."

This surprised Xia Xiao, "He Hongjun mentioned me to you?" Although she had a fleeting interest in He Hongjun, she had restrained herself, and Xia Xiao didn’t think He Hongjun would fancy her, especially not her past self.

"Exactly, who knows how you seduced him," Dong Meihua said unhappily.

Xia Xiao frowned, "Look at you, I’ve finally figured out the reason. You like He Hongjun, so you’re jealous."

Dong Meihua fell silent, evidently conceding.

The other dorm mates looked at each other, speechless.

"This is all baseless, are you being serious?" Xia Xiao asked. "Besides, He Hongjun and I don’t have anything to do with each other."

"He must be interested in you," Dong Meihua insisted.

"Nonsense," Xia Xiao didn’t believe it at all. She might appreciate He Hongjun’s looks, but she knew her own self from before, and there was no way He Hongjun would be interested in her. Perhaps his curiosity was because she was close to Gao Jiaxing.

"Yeah, Meihua, you must be mistaken," Yang Xuehua said.

Now, everyone in the dorm doubted that He Hongjun had any interest in Xia Xiao, thinking Dong Meihua was overreacting.

Wang Aihua was clearly displeased, "Quarreling over a man with your own roommate, and he’s not even your man. Dong Meihua, you’ve really outdone yourself."

"What are you afraid of? Li Shengmei likes you so much, you’re her ideal daughter-in-law, are you afraid I will compete with you? Are you lacking confidence, or do you think you’re not as good as me?" Xia Xiao said.

"It’s you who’s not as good as me," Dong Meihua responded, her tone full of defiance. She felt superior to Xia Xiao in every way, and yet, Xia Xiao seemed better off, which upset her balance.

"That’s it, you’re so confident. Then go win over Li Shengmei and He Hongjun. If you keep targeting me like this, I might just impulsively snatch He Hongjun away," Xia Xiao warned.

She wasn’t just saying that; He Hongjun’s looks and figure were exactly what Xia Xiao sought in a partner. If it weren’t for Li Shengmei, Xia Xiao would indeed take the initiative to pursue He Hongjun.

Yet Xia Xiao wasn’t contemplating marriage at this moment, being young was one thing, but she also felt she might meet even more outstanding men in the future, which would make her interest in He Hongjun fade.

"Xia Xiao, you’ve changed," Dong Meihua observed.

Xia Xiao knew what Dong Meihua meant; when the original owner of the body came to the production team with Dong Meihua, she was an introverted and timid girl, struggling to adapt to the unfamiliar environment, disliked for her poor work ability, and terrified internally.

But Xia Xiao wasn’t that thirteen-year-old girl; she was now twenty-three and couldn’t always pretend to have the original’s personality.

Moreover, to live here for so many years, Xia Xiao couldn’t always be seen as weak. Where there are people, there are rivers and lakes, conflicts, not to mention during the hungry times, when people would fight over a sweet potato.

Like Yang Hua, who hadn’t just started causing trouble for Xia Xiao, and like the sour words Dong Meihua had been spewing for just as long, Xia Xiao realized that sometimes yielding in the name of peace doesn’t settle things; to others, giving in can seem like a sign of weakness. So, when appropriate, she didn’t mind showing her sharp claws.

Perhaps another reason was the space.

Having the space, Xia Xiao did have a lot more confidence. In these special times, the unfamiliar environment no longer felt so terrifying.

"No one stays unchanged; when I first got here, everything was unfamiliar, and naturally, I was more careful. But there comes a time when enough is enough, and there’s no need to tolerate further. The kind are bullied, and you think I’m easy to bully; otherwise, Meihua, you wouldn’t single out anyone in the dorm but me, thinking I’m the easiest to taunt, right?"

Chuckle, Yang Xuehua laughed out, "Xia Xiao, you do have a way with words."

Wang Aihua also smiled and said, "You can’t judge a person by their cover. I never thought anyone was easy to bully. Do you think Zheng Xianghong is easy to bully, having been reprimanded by Old Lady Gao?"

Wang Aihua challenged Dong Meihua, who stayed silent, though clearly held that belief.

Wang Aihua shook her head toward Dong Meihua, "If Zheng Xianghong faced Li Shengmei directly, it’s not certain she would lose."

Dong Meihua was skeptical; in her eyes, Li Shengmei appeared very powerful, always managing to put Zheng Xianghong at a disadvantage. And for her, Zheng Xianghong only seemed strong on the surface, and if it weren’t for Gao Jiaxing’s intrusion into the He family’s affairs, Li Shengmei wouldn’t have suffered a setback.
