Chapter 60: Chapter 59 Dispute
"What’s wrong, why did you come back with a gloomy face?" Lin Xuebi asked.
Yang Hua replied, "My bed was taken."
Lin Xuebi casually said, "So it was taken; what do you need that bed for? You’re about to marry into the family anyway. You’re pregnant with Jianmin’s child now, you need to be careful. The first three months are crucial. Otherwise, it might hurt your health and make it hard to get pregnant later on."
Lin Xuebi was discontent with her daughter-in-law, Yang Hua. Although Yang Hua was carrying her grandson, she disapproved of a woman being pregnant out of wedlock.
Old Lady Gao and Lin Xuebi held different views. It wasn’t easy for her eldest grandson to find a woman, and he was preparing to have a great-grandchild. Old Lady Gao couldn’t be happier, she was extremely fond of Yang Hua.
Maybe it’s the love between generations, Old Lady Gao liked Lin Xuebi also because she despised Zheng Xianghong. Now with Yang Hua in the picture, Old Lady Gao liked her even more. No matter how she looked at Yang Hua, she found her pleasing to the eye.
"Don’t speak such inauspicious words. How can you, as a mother-in-law, be so harsh? Your granddaughter-in-law is pregnant; you should watch your words," Old Lady Gao told Yang Hua, "Huahua, come over here to grandma."
"Grandma" Yang Hua crisply responded and walked towards Old Lady Gao looking very affectionate, making Lin Xuebi visibly displeased.
Having lived in the production team for several years, Yang Hua knew well that Old Lady Gao was formidable. In her understanding, no one in the entire production team could afford to offend Old Lady Gao, and she had also seen how fiercely Old Lady Gao beat Zheng Xianghong.
But Yang Hua’s closeness to Old Lady Gao immediately displeased Lin Xuebi. She was already not very satisfied with Yang Hua, and now she was even more dissatisfied.
"If it wasn’t for the chosen auspicious day, you two would have already registered for marriage," Old Lady Gao exclaimed regretfully, then took Yang Hua’s hand and gently patted it, "You live here with peace of mind, this is your home now. You are the daughter-in-law I acknowledge. You just need to bear sons for the Gao family. As long as I live, no one can make it difficult for you."
Old Lady Gao’s assertive words immediately warmed Yang Hua’s heart, but she was still a bit angry with Gao Jianmin, feeling that he had misjudged him and that he couldn’t protect her.
That day, Gao Jianmin coaxed Yang Hua back with a humble tone; Yang Hua finally calmed down.
Meanwhile, as soon as Gao Jianmin and Yang Hua left, Xia Xiao and others pacified Xu Mei and went back to the dormitory to discuss.
"Looking at it, Yang Hua actually had a good marriage backup. Look at how anxious Gao Jianmin is for her," Feng Ying said.
Sun Yuhua disagreed, "Jianmin is nothing but a coward in front of Gao Jiaxing."
"Xia Xiao, don’t take what Yang Hua said to heart, she’s sick," Yang Xuehua said.
Xia Xiao nodded, "Exactly, she’s sick. She bites as soon as she sees me."
Dong Meihua looked at Xia Xiao and said, "Xia Xiao, I think you’ve become too sharp with your words."
"No one is made of mud, and even mud has three parts earth in it. If I yield to her, she’ll think I’m easy to bully. I didn’t take her on before because I didn’t want to stoop to her level," Xia Xiao said.
"You’re friends with Zheng Xianghong, so you’ve got some confidence now. Today, even Gao Jiaxing sided with you," Dong Meihua said.
Xia Xiao deliberately looked at Dong Meihua and said, "I think you are also confident. You are the one chosen as Li Shengmei’s daughter-in-law."
"Xia Xiao, what do you mean by that?" Dong Meihua looked at her unhappily.
"Take it any way you want, Meihua, but I’m curious. How exactly did I offend you? You can say it instead of being sarcastic all the time. Don’t you feel awkward?"
"You!" Dong Meihua glared at Xia Xiao.
Continuing, Xia Xiao said, "Li Shengmei said you are the most blessed, and I used to think you were pretty nice too, plump and cute. But you should look in the mirror now, don’t you have a sharp and sour face?"
Xia Xiao wondered if Dong Meihua’s frequent contact with Li Shengmei had influenced her this way, turning her from a naturally nice-looking, comfortable person into someone who seemed to have an added sourness about her.
"Meihua, what Xia Xiao said isn’t wrong. You haven’t noticed it yourself, but you’ve been very peculiar lately. We don’t know who you’ve been learning from," Wang Aihua spoke up.
"You all are just biased towards Xia Xiao. She’s the hypocritical one, always putting on that fake sweet face," Dong Meihua suddenly raised her voice.
Xia Xiao clapped, "That’s right, let it out. Don’t pretend to be nice to me while using strange sarcastic words. You aren’t uncomfortable with the pretense, but I dislike pretension."
"As if you’re clinging to Zheng Xianghong’s coattails now, all confident. If it were the old Xia Xiao, she wouldn’t have dared, always acting so meek and timid."
Triggered by Dong Meihua’s words, Xia Xiao got angry. Although the original owner of the body was no longer here, she still resented the body she occupied. Hearing Dong Meihua looking down upon the original owner prompted Xia Xiao to retaliate, "You’re not petty then? Can you stop borrowing things? Borrowing clam oil or needles and thread, and even clothes and shoes. You’re not young either, having read so many books. Sometimes you should think before you speak; not everyone is easy to bully. I usually don’t argue, not because I don’t get angry, but there’s a limit. Even a cornered dog will bite, let alone a human."
According to the household registration, the original owner was the same age as Dong Meihua, but in fact, she was three years younger. A thirteen-year-old girl leaving her hometown to come to a remote and unfamiliar place to survive—being timid and cautious was understandable. But in Dong Meihua’s eyes, this was seen as pettiness, considering that the original owner came from a big city and couldn’t measure up to the locals.
Xia Xiao didn’t intend to say all this initially, but her mood was spoiled by Yang Hua today, coupled with Dong Meihua’s acidic words which made her snap.
"Xia Xiao, you’re too bullying," Dong Meihua’s eyes reddened.
"I’m bullying you? Meihua, ask yourself, when have you ever borrowed something and I refused? I hardly use the clam oil, but I lend it to you. We are a team; everyone has gathered here from different cities, and I cherish the friendship and feelings among us. I have always put up with those biting words. I still remember the care you showed me when I was bitten by the venomous snake; you were a lovely person then and I liked you. But now, you always seem to be at odds with me. Maybe you aren’t aware, but you really have changed a lot."
"Meihua, let me also say something. Xia Xiao still cares about you, so don’t blame her for speaking this way. We’ve all felt the changes in you recently. If something is bothering you, you can talk to us. We get along well here in the dormitory. Xia Xiao isn’t someone who likes to argue. If you’re facing any difficulties, just speak up, and we’ll all help you out," Yang Xuehua spoke up.
