Chapter 248: Stalemate

This weak looking man is considered a Kan.

He conquers dozens of tribes and any tribes that have significance around the western area has been conquered by him. One summon and he could march out ten thousand horses to rampage across the Great Steppe.

Hence, this weak looking man is not weak at all. Nor is he harmless.

But , since the beginning of their marriage, they never talk much.

And the only impression that Ayera has of her man is that he is not talkative. And he is strong but seemingly weak

But, she never look at him this long. And she never talk with him this long.

She tries to win the Elders and she tries to win over the warriors and she has been doing reconnaissance work in Aeryon tribe.

But if there is one target she did not target, it is her own husband. It is ironic that the person she has the least information on in this tribe is her own husband. She knows what the Elders like, she knows the temperament of the great warriors under Aeryon, but she did not know Aeryon himself

And now looking at him, sitting so close to her, their breath touching each other, there is this feeling of shyness that suddenly creep up on her.

It is funny that when she is holding him on his waist, she did not feel this shyness.

Why?

Why did she feel shyness this time?

Because the intention is different, the feelings also became different.

Before, she did not hesitate to jump on Aryon because she view it as a part of her task. A job.

A work.

And so, she could do it mechanically, without any feelings.

But now, looking at him, feeling her own heart beating, the task now becomes more. And for a moment there is only this silence.

This silence that stretches on. Aeryon did not say anything.

But she has something to say.

"this is a political marriage" Aeryon nodded. By now, Aeryon has already had an idea what to say. Not only it would be good for him, it would also serve his purpose.

He wanted to lay it all down on the table

Aeryon look at Ayera and then he sighed

"I will perform the best acting in my life" he thought to himself.

"What will happen after this end?"

"You think it would end?"

"I don’t know. It depends on you. And your father. If you want it to end, I could end it for you"

Ayera knows what Aeryon is talking about. But she almost could not believe it.

Divorce. Divorce is not common. It is rare. Even more so when it is the ruling families, nobles and the likes

Even more so when it is a union that is forged because of a pact of alliance.

And that is the kind of union where Ayera and Aeryon, two different people united with each other

Because divorce would mean war.

It means he would not hesitate to go to war. Ayera does not believe that Aeryon would suggest such thing just because of her.

He probably suggested it because he knows he could win.

Her father had also expanded since the alliance was struck but she did not know whether her father army could withstand the assault of Aeryon army

She did not know the strength of her father armies, but she do know Aeryon army strength. And it is not a small army nor is it a weak army

"Is it a trap?" she thought to herself

For a moment there is another silence

"I know what your purpose is here. I know you came here to spy me." He paused for a second and then he said

She s not exactly subtle. If she is a spy, she must be the worse spy in the world. However, Aeryon believe that Ayera shows this to him.

She probably know whether she acted perfectly as a spy or not, it would not matter.

Garron must have known that he would trust Garron daughter.

And Ayera probably also knows this.

So, instead of hiding it and making it only more suspicious, it is easier to be very obvious about it.

But that did not make Aeryon lower down his guard at all. If anything, it makes him more guarded against Ayera

Since she reveal her spying activity, one might be tempted to only cares about her spying. But if this is the thing she shows to him, what is the things that she did not show to him.

"I allowed it. Because I know Garron. He would not feel at ease only with a verbal alliance. So, he married you to me"

Aeryon could only think to himself that he had married quite a troublesome woman. Outside, I have to worry about being plotted by warlords. Inside, I have to worry about being schemed upon by my wife.

One thing that he did find useful, is that he is always vigilant because of this.

Ayera look at Aeryon and she cross off something form her information.

She thought he is not talkative.

Who knows he would be like this?

Most men that Ayera knows would not even explain anything to their wives. It is the same in a peasant family and it is even stricter in noble families.

At least he knows that this is the way his father treated most of his wives.

She did not expect Aeryon would even share what he is thinking. Or bare it all like this

But now is not the time to feel touched.

"So?" she ask.

By now it is clear that Aeryon from the very beginning had never trusted her. Ayera never hoped that he trusted her.

Being the daughter of Garron, and Aeryon knowing the reputation of her father, that alone had made her quite understanding of Aeryon suspicion

Even if it’s her in the same situation, she too would not believe her

She sighed.

it is useless to deny it at this moment. She could confess it but confession at this time did not have any use. So, she could just acknowledge it boldly and that is what she did

"Getting close to you would not be good for my tribe. Or for me"

"My father did not mean harm" Aeryon hearing this only laugh. Even though he did not say it, it is clear that he did not trust Garron at all

He did not trust Garro words and his intention. It is true that Garron and Ayera action did not harm him at all.

But, not having the intention and not doing it is different.

Just because nothing armful happens to him did not mean that Garron did not have such intention

Just like Aeryon did not attack Utgard tribe.

Just because he is not harming the Utgard tribe now, does not mean that in is heart there is no intention of harming the Utgard tribe.

Instead, his plan is now focused toward the west.

And the east and the north is left alone for now. But someday, and that day is not far now, he would change his gaze

Aeryon has a simple answer to Ayera statement

"Time would tell. Whether your father is sincere in marrying you to me or just another one of his poisonous plans. Time would tell" And Aeryon paused for a second before saying

"And in the possibility that your father has deadly intention, at least you would be safe" Aeryon close his eyes for a second and then he sighed

"I don’t want to treat my children as a political tool. And I don’t want to treat you as a political tool either" he sighed and then added

"It would be too pitiful"

Aeryon could see ethe doubt on Ayera face and then he said

"Maybe, I could not help but use them later. But as long as I could , I would try not to make them like this. Everything else could be used. But, I really don’t want to use family"

"if something were to happen between our two tribes, then at least you would stay a virgin. And you could remarry with some other chief. Then you could run away from the right and wrongs of the matter. This is a game between your father and me. There is no need for you to sacrifice yourself" he chuckles a bit and then said

"Your life is your life to steer. That.....is why it is five years. It would be enough time for me to see the intention of your father. " Smiling, he then added

"It would also give time for us to accumulate memories with each other"

Ayera frowns.

Then she ask

"And what would happen after we accumulate memories?" Aeryon chuckles a bit

"Then maybe I would forget about the world. Or maybe, you would forget your tribe. Maybe you would love me. Maybe I would love you. Five years is half the time for mountains to change. If it could changes mountains, it could changes human heart"

"and you think you could change my heart?" Aeryon chuckles again

"Maybe, it is your heart that would change. Maybe, it is my heart that would change. Or maybe, our stubbornness would won out and we both would be the same man and woman we are today. But, this could only be known when time passes. Since the time did not yet pass, we are at a stalemate"
