Chapter 54: Chapter 54: I accept[GTG]
"What do you want, Leon?" asked Helen, her tone as icy as it was devoid of any pleasantries. She stood in front of Ryan, protecting him from the forthcoming Leon.
He got towards Helen and halted his march, "I hope you know the consequences of what you’re doing, you’re leaving a prince for a useless pesky low-ranker," Leon spoke, his voice riddled with disdain.
"Did you just call him useless?" she asked, taking a menacing step forward as the light in her eyes dissipated.
"Yes, I did, Helen. I know he brainwashed you into his bidding, but I can accept that, but that only if you come back to me now," he claimed, gazing over her shoulder to Ryan.
Her voice dropped to a murmur, words too low for him to make out. "How... dare..."
"I will let you think about it," he tried to walk past her but suddenly felt a strong grip on his wrist.
"Huh," he blurted, turning to meet a horrifying expression of Helen.
"Take that back or else," she threatened, her eyes devoid of emotion, well except the staggering intensity of hatred her contorted features portrayed.
"It’s okay, Helen." a hand was placed on her shoulder and she turned around to meet the gaze of Ryan who also tugged a reassuring smile, his gaze then drifted to the blonde hair standing before him, "I accept." he spoke with firm determination.
"Wait, no! You can’t!" Helen grabbed his shoulder, the urgency on her face palpable.
"I know he’s a high-ranker and all, but just as you said before, I made a promise to protect you, and I will stand by it," he said with a small smile.
Absolute Bullshit!
Though he really hated that smug look on Leon’s face, he knew accepting that challenge would be a fool’s errand considering his laughable stats.
He would probably get the crap beaten out of him.
So that then begs the question of what was his true motive for accepting this duel.
Well, the answer to that was related to the popup screen that had claimed his vision a few minutes ago.
[System allocated quest.
You conquer, you defend.
Objective: Accept challenge and win.
Target: Leon Kingscrown.
Trials: 0/1.
Reward: +200 lifepoints, Skill: Shadow clone [Unlocked].
Penalty: -50 lifepoints.]
That was the true reason behind his sudden confidence.
He needed to get stronger, faster. Plus recovering his memories is at the top of his plan.
There was also a skill too, if he could get a skill off this, it would be a huge plus.
"Tsk," Leon clicked his tongue at their irritating display of emotion, "Fine, I like that courage, I’ll like to see that smug look after I crush you," he spat and tapped his watch.
Sudden.
[Ding!]
Ryan felt a slight jolt on his wrist, he tilted his gaze to his watch and all of a sudden, a holographic screen reminiscent of his systems materialized on thin air.
[Challenge notification!
A duel has been issued to you by Leon Kingscrown.
Do you accept?
[Accept] [Decline]]
"And to make things fair, I will add a condition," continued Leon, a sinister glint flashing past his eyes.
[Ding!]
[Added conditions]
[Challenge notification!
A duel has been issued to you by Leon Kingscrown.
Condition: Use of quirk shall be the only ability accepted in duel.
Reward: A thousand points deducted from defeated participant and awarded to the winner of duel.
Penalty: Upon defaulting conditions, defaulter shall be stripped of a thousand points.
Do you accept?
[Accept] [Decline]]
’Hm, that’s right, the academy’s currency, I have no idea how many points I have,’ Ryan thought upon catching a glimpse of the penalty, but that was a thought for another time.
"Are you sure about this?" asked Ryan, staring at the conditions which actually favored him.
"Hump, do you think I’ll need to make use of my affinity to defeat a weakling like you?" Leon asked, his tone dripping with disdain.
’Ha, that actually sounds like a villain’s monologue... only that I’m not exactly a hero here,’ Ryan thought then gave a smirk that almost pushed Leon down the precipice of insanity.
"Fine," he said then tapped the accept button on display.
With a glitch-like filter, the screen vanished and a timer materialized before them both.
[Timer countdown: 00:59ss]
Feeling an arm grab hold of his wrist, he turned to meet the piercing gaze of Helen, "You can’t defeat him, even without his affinity he is still a high-ranker," she reasoned.
"Well, we will never know until we try," Ryan shrugged.
"Ha, fine. Keep this in mind, his quirk isn’t something to be trifled with, it’s an ability to mess with the mental perception of an opponent," she advised then stepped back.
’Hm, a mental attack? Then THAT could actually be of help here,’ he thought before stepping forward to face Leon, his katana poised for an attack.
[Timer countdown: 00:01ss]
"You will regret ever messing with me," he said then shot forward in a blur.
WHOOSH.
"Oh damn," Ryan blurted and raised his katana just in time to block and defend a horizontal slash.
KINK!
Sparks of light flickered out as the swords collided.
"Hump, as expected," Leon scoffed, as Ryan found himself being pushed back.
"Not so fast," Ryan smirked, shifting his grip on the hilt.
"Huh?" Leon’s sword slid off, but before he could regain his bearings, a fast hurtling knee struck him squarely in the abdomen.
"Ahh," he spat out, but found himself swept off the ground with a scissor sweep.
Realizing the severity of the situation he plunged his sword into the ground and with that as an anchor he somersaulted off the ground and landed a few distances from Ryan.
"Damn, seems you’re quite skilled, fine then," he said before donning a disconcerting smirk.
"Huh?" Ryan blurted as he suddenly started feeling a slight dizziness.
[Ability detected]
[Cognizance at risk]
[Absolute clarity activated]
[Ability rejected]
"What the heck did you do?!" Leon cursed as he felt something wrong with his ability.
"Nothing much," Ryan said with a smirk, sending his shadow to coat his katana, "Just became immune," he blurred forward.
