Chapter 53: Chapter 53: I challenge you![GTG]
Swords, bows, halberds, katanas, maces of all sorts, scythes, spears, nunchakus?... Heck! Sabers?!
Oh, it was just mana-powered swords. And then there was the section for conventional modern weapons, which no one really spared a second glance, probably because of their rumored weakness. With good armor, a bullet was worthless, and against creatures of immense power, it was of no use at all.
Ryan himself stood stunned by this sight. He had no idea what to pick. Sure, he was a bit good with swords, but that suddenly felt too generic a choice for him. Maybe he should pick something more interesting.
He stared at the sword section and now had another problem. Why were there so many goddamn types of swords?! There was an epee, a scimitar, a katana... That was pretty cool-looking, but that wasn’t the problem. There was Janbiya— who would ever make use of that? There was a claymore, a flyssa, a flamberge! A goddamn Labrys! Oh, that was not a sword. But there was also a lance. Like, who in their right mind would pick a lance as a permanent weapon?!
Well, the fact remained that the school actually gave great freedom to pick whatever and whichever weapon looked appealing, but the repercussions of a foolish choice would still bounce back on the student who made it.
He glanced at the spear section and found some normalcy, but only that they all had different looks and shapes. He could actually see a trident there, but the weapon didn’t feel like something he could use. He looked at a bow but shook his head as the downsides of such a weapon came to mind.
"Huh?" he blurted as he suddenly felt a tug on his sleeve.
"Oh, it’s you, and it seems you’ve already made your pick," he turned around and met Helen holding up an epee, a sword with a thin, long blade.
"Yeah, aren’t you going to though?" she said, pointing to the instructor who was looking at his wristwatch, his gaze occasionally sweeping about to catch idling students.
"Yeah, about that, I have no idea what to pick," Ryan confessed with a silly smile.
"Oh, but you don’t have to worry about it. Just pick anything. If you find out you don’t like it, I can buy you one later," she said before pulling him to the sword section.
"Really, but it costs a fortune to get a weapon, and an artifact at that."
Yes, that was the problem. The weapons here were high-tier weapons considered as artifacts, as they tend to hold special abilities, and the prices for such were disturbing, to say the least. Even for wealthy families, that was part of the reason the academy only allows for a single pick.
"Ha, need I remind you?" she asked, showing off her wristwatch which was actually being worn by everyone Ryan had come across. He was also given one this morning but still had no idea what it was. "I am a high ranker~ and I have been stocking up on points for the past four months," she flashed a smile as the neon-lit watch showed the number seven and a level fourteen.
Ryan was shocked by this. Yes, she was strong, but he didn’t know she was THAT strong! She was actually seventh in the entire hierarchy; it was really scary.
But Ryan still smiled and reached for a katana. The reason being, it looked extremely sharp. He took it off and found its scabbard just below it. He then rejoined Helen and waited for the other students to finish their picks.
"By the way, why did you pick something so—?" he tried to ask but was instantly interjected.
"Light?" he asked.
"Yeah, that’s the word," Ryan nodded.
"Well, the truth is, I have a wind affinity and a telekinesis quirk, so my combat prowess depends on my swiftness. Now I can’t have myself wielding something so heavy, can I? It will slow down my efficiency. And since I can also reinforce its strength with mana, that problem solves itself," she replied fluently, as though she could tell what was in his mind.
"Um... That’s great and all, but should you be telling me this?" Ryan asked, surprised at her willingness to reveal such personal information.
"Are you really asking me that?" she asked, her smile faltering. "No, no, no... I know you trust me, but I’m not really sure you should reveal such information casually," he struggled to create an explanation.
"Ha," a soft sigh escaped her lips. "It’s alright. You don’t have to worry too much about that. Even with my weakness revealed, you can’t defeat me," she did with a mischievous grin.
"Alright, I think that’s enough!" bellowed the man with a loud clap that almost deafened some students close to him.
He touched the device beside him, and the room warped once more.
"Now I will let you all familiarize yourselves with your various weapons, though I do have this urge to torture you lot. But I will hold off until the exams next week—" he suddenly stopped, his expression a bit strange. "Ha, seems I spilled the beans. Fine, I guess you bugs are actually lucky. This should have come suddenly to get the lot of you lazy maggots off the leaderboard, but I’ll just make it known now: your exams are next week, the exams that signal the end of the first term," he continued with a scowl.
An outburst erupted instantly as many were completely unprepared for this, but the loud roar shut them all up. "Keep your wailing to yourself! If I hear one more word, you all will run round the track a hundred times,"
There was nothing more torturous than that; even the high rankers acknowledged this fact.
"Now pick an opponent and get fighting. If by the end of thirty minutes, I find someone without a partner, that person would be fighting me!"
No one needed any more warning to scramble for a partner. Though fighting the instructor would prove more effective than an inexperienced student, the fact still remained a fact: he was the true definition of a monster, a sadist with a love for torture.
"I challenge you, Ryan Evans, to a duel!" bellowed a distinct voice from the other side of the room. Ryan turned around only to be met with a shocking sight.
"Leon?"
