Chapter 212: 5.22 Sweet Dreams
Kai didn’t leave after dinner and he didn’t leave either when the sun fully set into the horizon and the light gradually faded from the sky. Terra stared at him in confusion. Until when would he stay here?
So far, he had been comfortable with Kai’s presence in his room. The sentinel was mostly silent, doing something on his phone whilst Terra would secretly sketch his side profile, focusing heavily on the rendering of his eyes and his thick eyelashes; the way it lowered in concentration, the way the color shifted against the light. It had been fun, meditative even. Their breathing and the crayon running across paper were the only sounds reverberated in the room. Kai had been a very enjoyable company, but Terra had no idea how he would react if this kept on any longer, especially when his lips were still tingling from their kiss and body still felt too tight in his own skin.
He couldn’t help but be reminded that just a few hours ago, he was still straddling Kai’s lap unabashedly, learning how to coil his own tongue with his and sucked it into his own mouth. They had separated when Terra felt the change in his body. It... It was too shameful to be mentioned. Before Kai noticed anything, Terra had pushed himself off the man and locked himself in the bathroom, only going out after his skin barely cooled down and the sentinel had knocked on the door for the fourth time, asking again and again if Terra was okay and threatening to knock the door down if he was still silent.
Even then, Terra had a hard time looking directly into his eyes, otherwise his heart would go jackrabbiting again.
"Oh, you didn’t know?" The corner of Lu Yizhou’s lips tilted up after Terra wrote the question down and showed it to him. He looked smug and pleased with himself but when Terra blinked, he looked like his usual self again. Huh, must be a trick of light. "My room was destroyed by yesterday’s fire. So I will be staying here for a while."
He said... what?! Terra froze, the crayon crushed in his palm.
Lu Yizhou came close and gently peeled the broken crayon out of his hand before putting it on the nightstand. "You don’t like it?" He inquired carefully. "It’s okay if you don’t. I will ask Doctor Wyatt for another—"
Terra shook his head, his cheeks flaming.
"Alright." He chuckled.
Terra found himself utterly unable to concentrate after that. If... If they were going to stay in the same room, it meant that they were sleeping on the same bed... right? Terra eyed his bed doubtfully. Could Kai fit in there? The sentinel’s frame was way wider than Terra but they might be able to work it out if they were to press together closely. Terra’s cheeks flushed at the thought and he forced himself to shake off the thoughts to no avail. He was still fidgeting when he went into the bathroom to scrub himself longer than usual, he was still fidgeting when it was Kai’s turn and he was listening to the sound of water splashing around like a creep. He fidgeted even more when Kai came out in another softer shirt and loose pants that hung lowly on his hips then went to turn off the light.
Terra’s eyes instantly adjusted to the dark, having accustomed to the vivid blackness of nature. He scooted backward until his body was flat against the wall when Lu Yizhou climbed up and settled beside him. Terra was true, his bed was indeed too small for both of them. Even though Terra had been lying on his side, he was still touching Lu Yizhou despite his effort of planting himself deeper into the wall.
Lu Yizhou let out a sigh and turned to his side facing him, his silver eyes glowing softly in the dark. "Why are you so far away? Come closer."
What far away? There was not enough space between them okay?! Terra grumbled inwardly but then, he froze when Lu Yizhou’s arm went around his waist and tugged him closer until they were literally pressed against each other, Terra’s nose tucked to the crook of the man’s neck. He sucked in a breath. A mistake. The sentinel’s natural cold scent mixed with Terra’s milky soap wash wafted into his nose. To have his own scent mingled with the sentinel... Terra squeezed his eyes shut. Why did he suddenly feel like he was going to cry?
"I haven’t been able to sleep since I arrived here," Lu Yizhou started. His fingers drew soothing patterns on Terra’s back and Terra found tension slowly oozing out of his body. He focused on the sentinel’s voice; it was nice. Very nice. The deep and soothing quality made Terra feel like he was camping on a patch of soft grass with warm air as the blanket, millions of twinkling sky above him.
Terra mouthed against his skin, why?
"Hmm... I was worried about you." Terra looked up in shock at that. Kai couldn’t sleep for a few days because of him? "I saw your spirit guide every night, but it still wasn’t enough. I wanted to make sure that you’re eating okay, that you’re sleeping well." Lu Yizhou hugged him tighter, it was almost smothering. Then he buried his face into Terra’s thick and long hair. His voice so quiet and soft that it made Terra’s heart squeezed painfully. "I have been dying to meet you, Terra."
Me too, he caught himself saying. Ever since he saw the horned eagle perched on top of the chair across the room, doing nothing but watching him all day, he was starting to get curious about its owner. The horned eagle was a softie, despite its intimidating appearance. It offered Terra a silent companion and on some nights when sleep eluded him, it snuggled close to him and used its wings to pat his head, over and over again until Terra drifted off to sleep. Was it possible to like someone even before you met them? He supposed it was. Wasn’t it the case with Kai and him?
Now instead of a fluffy eagle, he had a big human sized cuddler that didn’t only offer him immense comfort, but also made his heart beat faster than usual.
"Sleep." Lu Yizhou dropped a fleeting kiss on his forehead and carded his fingers through Terra’s hair. "Sweet dreams, Terra."
Sweet dreams, Terra murmured. He thought it would be hard for him to fall asleep with someone else on his bed yet to his surprise, Terra dozed off almost as soon as he closed his eyes. This time, his dream wasn’t filled with the figure in light blue robe again. It was a different man this time. He had a pair of enormous wings behind his back, and spiral horns atop of his head. His face was blurry, save for his silver eyes. The very familiar silver eyes. "Oliver," he called softly, affection seeping from his voice.
Terra found himself rushing to the man’s embrace, laughing. Happiness flooded his chest to the point where he could feel it leaking out from his skin to the air around him. Love, love, love. He loved this man so much. He told him as much. "I love you."
Brief surprise flashed through the man’s eyes, as if he didn’t expect that he would be on the receiving end of the affection even though Terra had told him countless times before, every single day. Huh? How could Terra know this fact so clearly? It was certainly very weird. He had no idea who this man was yet he also felt like he had known this man for decades, had loved him even longer; would still love him in many, many lifetimes after this.
Terra woke up with the man’s name on the tip of his tongue.
It was morning and Kai was nowhere to be seen. The space beside Terra was still warm and he could hear the shower running in the bathroom. Terra scrambled to get the sketchbook under his pillow and turned to a certain page. His hands were shaking as he wrote again and again. [Altair. Altair. Altair.]
In that page were clusters of names filled to the brim. He hadn’t shown it to anyone before, not even Doctor Wyatt lest the doctor would deem him crazy. Otherwise, how could he explain the recurring dreams? He stroked the new name with a vivid longing on his chest. There had been a few names written there and Terra had no idea whether it would increase in the future. Altair, Raphael, Jingxue-Jun. The last one was the name of the man in light blue robe, Terra knew after a nightmare of the man dripping with blood and Terra screaming for him not to go, not to leave him. He had woken up with tears on his face, gasping. Doctor Wyatt had been so panicked by his sudden breakdown that he had to put Terra on IV drip and watched over him for thirty hours.
But among the secret collection of names was one that he had written repeatedly for almost two full pages. The name that always invoked an ache deep inside his soul, leaving him with an emptiness that nothing could fill. It was a name associated with happiness, joy and grief.
Terra turned the page and tested the name on his tongue. He had been doing it so often that he felt he could say it smoothly at any time.
Lu Yizhou.
When he heard the shower stop running in the bathroom, Terra hastily slammed the book shut, shoved it beneath his pillow, lay down and closed his eyes, pretending to sleep. In the next second, the bathroom door slid open and Kai walked out quietly. Terra breathed in and out to calm his erratic heartbeat. He wasn’t ready to tell anyone about his strange and vivid dreams, moreover if it was Kai.
Kai was Terra’s sentinel — he was going to be, soon. He was kind, gentle, thoughtful and considerate. He was perfect from head to toe so surely... Terra shouldn’t burden him with this kind of thing, right? What if Kai knew how abnormal Terra was and decided he didn’t want Terra anymore? Terra squeezed his eyes shut as the mere idea was enough to suffocate him.
No, Terra couldn’t let him know. He wouldn’t.
