Chapter 198: Chocolates, Warnings, and a Whispered Surprise
Days had passed since Zethan and Lilia returned home. Zethan had resumed going out for work, and usually, Lilia accompanied him. But today, for some unknown reason, she didn’t feel like going.
"Are you sure nothing’s wrong?" Zethan asked with concern. He wasn’t sure what to think, especially since she had complained earlier about a stomach ache.
"I ate in the middle of the night," she said, chewing as she pushed some corn into her mouth. "I think that’s why I’m feeling so tired."
Zethan nodded, dressed in a plain white shirt and fitted black pants. Lilia, on the other hand, wore a baggy shirt and pajama pants—her go-to comfy outfit lately.
"I guess I won’t be having an unforgettable break with you," Zethan teased.
Lilia’s face flushed, knowing exactly what he meant.
"Oh please, Zethan. Stop exaggerating," she said, rolling her eyes. "You’ve been working just fine without me."
"But it’s different with you," he said, leaning closer. "Do you know how happy I get just seeing your beautiful face at the office? Hmm? And now this one will be forgettable, since you’re not there."
Lilia laughed softly at his words.
These past few days, she had been going to work with Zethan—after so much begging, he finally gave in and allowed her to join him, since they worked at the same office. But now, the tables had turned. He was the one trying to convince her.
Zethan turned to her and spoke gently, "Remember to eat fruits, drink enough water, and get some proper rest. That’ll help a lot."
He paused, then added with a teasing glint in his eyes, "Makes me wonder what my wife was thinking in the middle of the night, eating—when I could’ve simply relieved any stress. Hmm?"
Lilia shrugged, looking sheepish. "I just needed a midnight snack," she muttered.
But then his words hit her.
"Oh my—you... bad man!" she gasped. It took her a moment to fully register what he had said.
Zethan nodded knowingly. "Oh, I am more than that, sweetheart. And I’ll show you."
Then his tone softened. "If you do everything I told you, I’ll bring chocolates."
Lilia’s lips parted in surprise, her eyes lighting up. "Really?"
Zethan nodded with a small smile. "Of course. I’ll bring lots and lots of chocolates for you."
A slow, soft smile curled on her lips. Zethan drank the last of his water, then stood and walked over to where she sat at the dining table. He leaned in and gave her a gentle peck on the lips.
"Come on, go," Lilia said quietly, her smile lingering. "You wouldn’t want to be late, Mr. CEO."
Zethan smirked. "Oh yeah, sure—Mrs. CEO."
Lilia giggled softly as he walked out the door.
Later that day
Lilia stood outside, watering the plants. Wanting to do something productive after resting, she gently poured water over the flowers. Her gaze lingered on a tall sunflower, its bright yellow petals glowing under the afternoon sun. She smiled softly, amused by its quiet beauty.
Turning to Evie, she said, "These flowers are so beautiful. Such a lovely sight at this time of day, don’t you think?"
Evie nodded, holding a covered plate in her hands. "Very true, Mrs. Lilia. You should eat something—you’ve been watering the plants for quite a while now," she said gently.
Lilia gave a quiet nod. "Okay, Evie," she murmured.
She walked over to the nearby bench and sat down, extending her hand in invitation. Evie bowed respectfully before sitting beside her. She handed Lilia the plate, which Lilia opened carefully before beginning to eat in silence.
It was mixed fruit. A soft smile landed on Lilia’s lips. Finally, she had done everything Zethan told her to. Now all that was left was waiting for him to come back with her chocolate.
Meanwhile...
Zethan sat in the office, the only sound filling the space was the steady tapping of his laptop keyboard as he worked intently on the company’s data management.
Lucas stood beside him and spoke quietly, "Mr. Zethan, there are no new updates for today. After this, we have just one hour left before heading home. Since you cancelled the meeting earlier, it’s been moved to tomorrow."
Zethan remained silent, but his stillness confirmed he had heard. Lucas gave a slight nod and bowed respectfully.
"That will be all for today. Any further adjustments will be handled by the secretary."
Again, Zethan didn’t reply, but Lucas knew his words had registered. Moments later, the phone on Zethan’s desk vibrated, breaking the silence.
To Lucas’s surprise, it wasn’t Zethan’s—it was his. Zethan’s gaze drifted to the phone, then back to Lucas. It was rare for Lucas to receive calls during work hours—it had never happened before. It was usually Evie who called, and even she wouldn’t dare disturb them during office hours, being as serious as she was about her work.
Not to mention, Lucas had turned on airplane mode on Zethan’s phone to avoid distractions as—yet here Lucas was, causing one.
"Answer it," Zethan said, to Lucas’s surprise. His boss really had changed.
"Oh—yes," Lucas muttered quickly, picking up the phone. The screen read:
’Sweetie Pie’
His ears tinted slightly as he cleared his throat.
"Eh..."
Was that why Zethan told him to answer it? Embarrassed, Lucas quickly left the room to take the call, not wanting to disturb his boss.
As soon as the door closed, Zethan leaned back, a sigh escaping his lips as he swept his hand through his hair. He couldn’t help but feel uneasy. Why was he feeling this way?
There was no denying it—he planned to surprise her with chocolates and more. He wanted to celebrate his love for her officially. A slow smile tugged at his lips... until the door opened again.
Lucas entered, his face pale. Zethan raised an eyebrow.
"Mr. Z-Zethan, it’s about Mrs. Lilia..."
The moment those words left Lucas’s lips, Zethan stiffened.
"What happened?" he asked sharply.
Lucas continued, "She was rushed to the hospital. She fainted."
Zethan immediately stood.
That was nearly impossible. She was now a vampire—sickness wasn’t supposed to happen. It was rare, unless it was a side effect. But he doubted that. He was a pureblood vampire, not a half-blood. Side effects usually happened when a half vampire tried turning a human.
Without another word, Zethan walked out of the office with hurried steps.
At the hospital
Lilia’s eyes fluttered open, her vision a little blurry. She felt a large hand covering hers. Slowly, she turned her gaze to see Zethan sitting beside her, his hair slightly disheveled and his white shirt rumpled—but it didn’t hide the handsome features of his face.
"Z-Zethan," Lilia managed to whisper.
Zethan leaned in closer. "Yes, I’m here," he said quietly, their eyes meeting.
They were in the same hospital room Zethan usually took her to. A drip was connected to her arm. She tried to sit up, but Zethan immediately moved to support her, careful not to strain her.
"How are you feeling?" he asked softly, eyes full of concern.
A soft smile bloomed on her cheeks as she whispered, "I wasn’t feeling quite well... until I saw you."
Zethan’s eyes widened—his wife was actually joking in such a serious moment. He gave her a sharp glare, silently telling her this wasn’t a joke. But she only giggled, and he couldn’t help but shake his head in disbelief.
Her head still ached, a dull throbbing that pulsed behind her eyes, but she didn’t care. Zethan was here. That was enough. His presence alone seemed to ease some of the weight pressing on her chest.
"You really know how to joke in serious situations, don’t you?" Zethan muttered with a sigh, though the corners of his mouth twitched with amusement.
Lilia gave a soft shake of her head, her eyes twinkling despite the pain. Zethan chuckled, unable to resist the pull of her charm even now.
"Does it still hurt?" he asked, brushing his palm gently across her forehead. His touch was warm, calming—anchoring.
She nodded slowly. "It does. Looks like I’ll finally take your advice... and come to you to relieve my stress."
Zethan blinked. Then his eyes widened.
She had just used his exact teasing words—against him.
Oh, this wife of his would be the death of him.
Before he could offer a witty comeback, a soft knock echoed through the room. The door creaked open, and a woman stepped inside in a crisp white coat. Lena’s hair was pinned neatly into a bun, glasses perched on her nose, giving her an air of calm professionalism.
"Mr. Zethan," she began, voice steady, "your wife is stable. The fainting and headaches... they were due to the signs we expected. The immortality stage is nearing completion."
Zethan face turned calm. Lilia’s fingers tightened around his.
"But that’s not all," the doctor added, pausing as she glanced at Lilia, then back at Zethan. Her voice lowered a pitch, as if the words were too heavy to say aloud.
"Mr. Zethan... your wife is pregnant."
