Chapter 104: Chapter 104: Sarcasm and Mockery

The grand hall was bright and clear.

Younger members of the family were all paying their respects to an elderly lady with white hair sitting at the head of the room.

"Grandma, may you enjoy peace and longevity."

"Grandma, your grandson has missed you to death." Some of the younger grandchildren ran straight to the old lady and hugged her thighs.

"Oh my, my sweet grandsons, my lovely granddaughters, let grandma give you a hug."

Lady Wang watched the younger generation with a beaming smile, her eyes full of tender affection, "Rise, all of you."

Li Feng didn’t join in, hiding at the back. He glanced around, and aside from the old lady at the head, there were several noblewomen seated in the grand hall.

"You little mud monkeys, stop clinging to grandma. Come here."

"Today they said Jin’er’s husband from another family was coming too. Why haven’t I seen him?" The middle-aged woman seated at the lower head of the table glanced around the crowd and asked.

"Indeed, I heard he is a Qilin of the Li Family. Despite his young age, he went out to strive on his own and has quite some ambition."

"Jin’er, aren’t you going to introduce your resident husband?"

As the woman in the chair spoke, her words were superficially polite, yet they were laced with ridicule and mockery.

If these people truly valued Li Feng, they wouldn’t repeatedly refer to him as a ’resident husband’. Outside, a ’resident husband’ is looked down upon, a man with no status. In a prestigious and traditional household like the Wang Family, such a man is practically a joke.

Especially since this ’resident husband’ had blocked the paths of their own sons.

Wang Minglun immediately stepped aside, and the younger members of the Wang Family followed suit. How could they block someone else’s moment in the spotlight?

With a few steps back, they directly revealed Li Feng.

Wang Jin’er was annoyed by her aunts’ snide comments but couldn’t call them out. She introduced him firmly.

"Grandma, aunts, and my lady aunt, this is Uncle Li’s son, Li Feng."

Wang Jin’er emphasized the words ’Uncle Li’ heavily.

"Tsk, it’s always said that daughters go to their husbands’ families. You’re not even married yet, and already you’re turning your elbows outwards."

"Second Auntie, did I say anything wrong?"

Wang Jin’er clenched her teeth as she turned towards her second aunt.

"You girl, your second aunt was just speaking her mind. There’s no need to be so relentless. Fine, I’ll say no more. Happy?"

The second aunt, having gained an advantage, now played coy and shut her mouth.

Li Feng couldn’t help but glance at her. She was Wang Jin’er’s second aunt, surely in her forties or fifties but well-maintained, looking to be just over forty with a fading charm still evident.

Wang Jin’er’s father was the legitimate eldest son. However, since Wang Jin’er’s mother had passed away early and he had not remarried, Wang Jin’er’s branch didn’t even have someone to speak up for them at home.

Meanwhile, the other branches were scheming for higher positions, unified in their resentment.

"So you are Li Feng."

The old lady looked him up and down, "You do look presentable. Those messy things you did outside before, consider them turned over. But once you marry into our Wang Family, you must follow our family’s rules. Stay well-behaved at home and don’t even think about stirring up trouble outside."

"Do you understand?"

The old lady’s tone had shifted from her previous warmth to a cold one as she glanced at Li Feng, clearly not fond of this resident husband.

The old lady belonged to the older generation who valued men over women. Although Wang Jin’er was a legitimate granddaughter, the Wang Family’s lineage needed a male heir.

Her original plan was to choose someone from the next generation to be adopted to ensure the continuity of the Wang Family line.

Yet her eldest son had concocted this marriage arrangement, much to her displeasure.

To her aggravation, she had no way to refuse.

After all, that person from the Li Family was on his way to the top, and the marriage between the two families had already been publicly discussed. If she opposed her eldest son, wouldn’t it make the Wang Family a laughingstock?

Hearing her grandmother’s reprimand, Wang Jin’er couldn’t help but reach out and grab Li Feng’s arm, fearing that he would rebel and talk back to grandma.

Li Feng patted Wang Jin’er’s hand and looked at the Wang Family matriarch who had just tried to assert her dominance over him with a slight smile.

"Yes, Li Feng will certainly remember the Lady’s teachings."

"Hah, his skin is really thicker than the city walls, such a climber." A woman with a seductive air let out a mocking laugh.

The speaker was Wang Jin’er’s eldest aunt, who looked in her thirties although she was in her forties.

"If his skin weren’t thick, how could he become a son-in-law who moved in with his wife’s family, and for the second time at that?"

The voices were not loud, but they were clear enough for everyone to hear; the old lady, however, did not seem inclined to scold them.

The other children of the Wang Family also looked at Li Feng as if watching a play; after all, Li Feng, the son-in-law who moved in with his wife’s family, was someone they rather disliked.

Li Feng acted as if he heard nothing, as if they were non-existent.

"Li Feng is visiting for the first time, and it would not be good to come empty-handed, so I have prepared a special gift to present to the Lady."

"Oh?"

The Wang Family matriarch said "Oh," and casually summoned someone to take it; after all, one does not slap away a smiling face.

However, in her heart, she looked even more disdainfully upon Li Feng, a shameless man—after all, the Li Family was a great family; how could they raise someone so devoid of shame?

But then she thought, this fellow is just a rogue from the Li Family; otherwise, why would a son of the Li’s agree to be a disgraced son-in-law and move in with the Wang Family?

The old lady didn’t take Li Feng’s gift seriously either; accepting it was already giving him face.

However, the seated women exchanged glances; this fellow really knew how to climb the pole. He didn’t even lose his temper over this—was it because he was crafty or just truly shameless?

"Hmph, giving a gift to my mother is thoughtful of you, but I wonder if there’s any sincerity in it, or if it’s just something you bought randomly to get it over with."

Wang Jin’er’s eldest aunt rose from her seat and took the painting Li Feng had brought.

"Hmm, it looks like it’s an ancient painting."

The aunt, speaking out loud, immediately unraveled the red cord and then unrolled the painting.

After a quick glance, a glint appeared in the aunt’s eyes and her lips curved slightly upward.

"Hah, mother, this painting really does suit your taste. You’re going to love it once you see it."

"Oh."

The Wang Family matriarch, intrigued by her daughter’s words, showed some interest: "What painting is it? Unroll it for me to see."

Wang Jin’er pinched Li Feng lightly and whispered, "What kind of painting have you brought?"

"Just look at it yourself and you’ll know."

Wang Jin’er rolled her eyes, pursing her lips: "Fine, don’t tell me, but you were still considerate."

That Li Feng had not come empty-handed was somewhat surprising to Wang Jin’er; after all, the fellow had intended to call off their engagement before.

And with his foul temper, it was odd that he could remain so patient and not throw a fit—could he have changed his ways?

"Eldest Sister, it’s not as fun to enjoy something alone as it is to share it with everyone. Why not let us all have a look together?"

"That’s right."

"Mother, what do you say?"

"If you want to see, then see; it’s not something shameful." The old lady waved her hand, looking wouldn’t cost her a piece of flesh.

The eldest aunt immediately gestured with her hand and had someone pull on one side of the scroll to unfurl the painting.

"This, isn’t this the ’Eighty-Seven Immortals Scroll’?"

"It really is."

"It must be a fake, right?"

Wang Jin’er blinked and turned to Li Feng: "Why did you bring this painting?"
