Chapter 99: Chapter 89: Tonight, No Taboos

Gao Yi used to get close to his target before launching a sudden strike, which was why getting close was always the hardest part.

But this time was different, this time Gao Yi had a mercenary by his side, so instead of sneaking up, they planned to storm in.

And for that, they would rely on Lin Xianghua.

Lin Xianghua was fully armed, with his M4 rifle ready, but he was missing a handgun.

Lin Xianghua’s gear now was all police equipment, of course, without the police insignia. Police and military gear were often interchangeable, so Lin Xianghua was quite comfortable with his outfit.

"Missing anything else?"

Lin Xianghua patted his bullet-proof vest and helmet, glanced at his tactical vest, and touched his radio, hand grenades, and the military knife, checking the empty quick-draw holster at his right hip.

His check was thorough. Finally, Lin Xianghua murmured, "If possible, I’m missing a night vision device. After all, it is a night operation, and it would be much better with night vision."

They really had forgotten, or rather neglected it, because an assassin wouldn’t need such a gadget.

"Uh..."

Gao Yi looked to Luca, who showed an embarrassed expression and said, "Next time be prepared, uh... sorry."

Lin Xianghua sighed, "No worries, not everyone has night vision. After all, they are quite expensive."

Gao Yi hesitated but felt the matter needed to be resolved, so he picked up the phone to dial a number. Waiting for the call to connect, he spoke quietly, "We’re almost ready, just missing night vision. Can you arrange one? Or even just borrowing one would do."

"Night vision? Got it! But this time it’s just on loan, losing it wouldn’t be good for the records. Next time I’ll arrange for an ’operational loss’ and get you two sets."

"Alright, let’s rendezvous and head out."

After hanging up, Gao Yi faced the two and said, "All set, let’s go."

Gao Yi didn’t carry a handgun either; his weapon was a Golden Gourd Hammer. Although he never lacked firearms, he didn’t want to bring any legally purchased and registered guns to a crime scene.

As for a helmet and a bullet-proof vest, those were out of the question for Gao Yi – he found them too cumbersome.

Luca drove straight for the agreed location.

Two cars were already waiting by the roadside.

Martin stood outside one of the cars smoking, while a man in a suit stood opposite him, gesticulating and seemingly talking endlessly. As Gao Yi’s car pulled over beside them, the two halted their conversation.

Gao Yi got out of the car, while Lin Xianghua stayed put. Lin pulled down the mask on top of his head and secured his helmet, then ceremoniously tightened his gloves.

Martin and his tall companion approached. Martin pointed at his friend and whispered, "Richard Miller, my friend."

Gao Yi couldn’t help but size up Richard.

This cuckold wholesaler looked somewhat handsome, not outstandingly so, but he possessed a particularly radiant smile. He seemed to be in his thirties, yet when laughing, he exuded the sunny disposition typically seen in teenagers – strikingly bright and affable.

"Hi, pleased to meet you."

Richard shook hands with Gao Yi then obediently moved aside without uttering another word.

An adult with a boyish charm, sunny disposition, and a robust figure, he looked like a university football athlete yet was surprisingly well-behaved and sensible.

Playboys sure do have their ways.

Gao Yi shifted his focus onto Martin and murmured, "Where are the goods?"

Martin walked to the trunk of his car and popped it open.

Inside were two bags—one box containing two identical handguns, both M1911s, and there were also two head-mounted binocular night vision devices.

"The night vision needs to be returned; I’ll get you two sets next time. Use these guns to open fire, preferably take down two guys, but no pressure, a follow-up shot on the bodies works too. This big bag has cocaine, twenty-six kilos, Richard will handle it later."

Gao Yi picked up a handgun and asked, "All good?"

"Guaranteed no problems."

Grabbing two magazines, Gao Yi returned to the car and handed the gun and magazines to Lin Xianghua.

Lin Xianghua ejected the magazine to check the bullets, reinserted it, and cycled the slide. Loading a round, he nodded at Gao Yi.

Gao Yi went back to Martin’s side, now holding the remaining handgun, and said, "Let’s go."

Martin pointed at Gao Yi’s ear and whispered, "Don’t you need a radio?"

"Uh, oh, yeah, I’ll take one too."

Gao Yi wasn’t used to using radios, mainly because he’d never used one before. Seeing Martin and Richard already wearing earpieces, and Lin Xianghua using a radio, he decided to wear one as well.

He’d get used to it with time.

"Let’s head out."

Gao Yi had assumed Martin and Richard would each drive a car, but after he said they should head out, Richard went up to the car parked in front and tapped on the window twice. Then, the black sedan started.

Gao Yi frowned slightly, and Martin whispered, "Someone’s got to lead the way. Trust me, it’s reliable."

The two cars set off in succession, and after the first car started moving, Gao Yi’s group followed.

He put an earpiece in, turned on the radio, and suddenly Lin Xianghua said, "Sound check, respond if you receive this, over."

Gao Yi turned to look at Lin Xianghua in the back seat, who spread his hands and whispered, "Just say received, over."

Gao Yi replied, "Received, over. What now?"

"That’s it, sound is clear, sound check complete, over."

Luca added from the side, "It’s a necessary procedure when using radios."

Gao Yi nodded. After all, these procedures were commonplace for mercenaries, and it was normal for him to be unfamiliar, no shame in that.

After driving for about fifteen minutes, Gao Yi noticed the lead car’s taillights flashing several times in quick succession. Once they passed, two other cars parked by the roadside started up and took off in another direction.

"Our allies have left their posts, all surveillance has been withdrawn, over."

A radio sure was convenient; Martin’s voice came through the earpiece, informing them what those cars were for.

The police were exiting the scene.

The assassins were entering.

Then Martin said again, "First pass for inspection, maintain speed, over."

The three cars maintained a distance between each other and smoothly cruised through the streets.

The black neighborhood had rows of standalone houses, but Gao Yi noticed that several houses had groups of people hanging around, mostly teenagers. Even late at night, they were sitting idly on their porches. As cars passed by, everyone’s eyes followed them closely.

"Target is on the left, passing by, over."

The entrance to Trash Dog’s home was empty, but from the moment they entered the community, there were people at both ends of the street, undoubtedly using the idle black teenagers as lookouts.

After driving past Trash Dog’s neighborhood and stopping again, a fully uniformed police officer got out of the front car.

Martin and Richard also got out of their car.

Gao Yi hadn’t worked with these official tricksters before and didn’t know their methods. Taking a breath, he remembered his face was heavily disguised, which gave him enough confidence. After waiting for a moment, he too stepped out of the car.

The four of them gathered together.

The police officer spoke first in a low voice, "Those blacks are watching the street corners, there are people all night, and they’ll give a warning if a patrol car moves. If shots are fired, everyone on the street will open fire."

This hadn’t been part of the initial briefing.

Gao Yi was dissatisfied but didn’t rush to show it, trusting Martin to have an appropriate plan.

Sure enough, the officer continued, "In ten minutes, two patrol cars will deal with an emergency on the west end of the road. They won’t enter the neighborhood, but it should draw those blacks’ attention. You enter from the eastern side, and once you start, if those blacks dare to grab guns to help Trash Dog, our men will intervene forcefully."

The police were directly getting involved, which was good and reliable.

Gao Yi was quite satisfied, yet he still showed no reaction.

"Any more questions?"

Martin murmured, "No issues."

The officer glanced at his watch and said, "Be as quick as possible. We’ll intercept you on the way out. We’ll only shoot in the air, don’t worry, and please don’t get nervous. It would be troublesome if one of our own gets hurt."

Richard laughed, "Don’t worry, we’re experienced."

The officer nodded, "I’ll wait here for you guys. After we’re done here, we’ll move on to the next location. Any problems?"

"No problems."

Everyone nodded and returned to their vehicles.

Back in the car, Gao Yi said to Luca, "There are too many people outside; it’s not safe for you to stay in the car. Better come inside with us, but don’t get involved in the action. Also, put on your bullet-proof vest."

According to the plan, Luca wasn’t supposed to go in, but given the situation, Gao Yi felt being outside was riskier. It would be better for Luca to come inside, if only to avoid stray bullets.

Luca thought it over and said, "Alright, I’ll record with my phone."

That would be somewhat helpful. Gao Yi nodded and then drew his handgun, checking the magazine and cycling the slide as Lin Xianghua had done, chambering a round.

With a gun in his left hand and a hammer in his right, he unbuckled his seatbelt.

Twisting his neck, Gao Yi took a breath and said, "Ready."

They waited quietly in the car for a few minutes; suddenly, Gao Yi heard Martin announce through the earpiece, "It’s started, move in!"

Martin’s headlights came on first, flashing twice toward the street of that community before the car started moving at a normal pace.

Gao Yi, holding the hammer in his right hand, used two fingers to hold the car door handle and whispered, "Charge straight in once we’re out of the car, Brother Lin. You lead with your bullet-proof vest, and I’ll follow."

Lin Xianghua murmured in return, "Got it! Can I open fire freely?"

Gao Yi couldn’t help but chuckle, "Don’t you get the situation yet? Tonight is without restrictions, do as you please!"
