Chapter 523 - 502: Rushing Towards Each Other

Chapter 523: Chapter 502: Rushing Towards Each Other

If a fortress is truly impenetrable from the outside, then naturally, you should try attacking it from within.

Sometimes, you might just say a word, and the people inside might surrender outright. It’s not uncommon.

If it works, great. If not, no big deal. With that principle in mind, Yuri wasn’t expecting much as he dialed Glakov’s number.

The call connected, and a deep voice came through.

"Hello."

Yuri froze for a moment, but quickly regained his composure and said in a low voice, "This is Yuri. I want to see you."

There was no sound from the receiver at first. After a brief moment, the deep voice finally responded, "Hmph."

A meaningless single syllable, yet brimming with disdain.

Yuri paused for a beat before continuing, "I’ve been released. I wanted to find you, but you’ve been hiding too well."

"Hmph. Go on."

Yuri’s expression remained unchanged as he calmly said, "Not many people who were part of the operation back then are still alive. I want to kill you."

Glakov replied evenly, "I know what you’ve been up to tonight. You want to kill me? I’m waiting for you."

Yuri remained surprisingly calm. "I can’t get in."

"Enough, Yuri. You want to kill me, just like I’ve wanted to kill you all these years. You’ve been hiding too deep, and I hadn’t had the chance to take you out. But now that you’ve resurfaced, let’s settle this."

Glakov’s tone grew colder as he raised his voice, "I’m not one for long speeches. Since you want me dead, and I want you dead, let’s handle it like men. Let’s see who survives."

After thinking for a moment, Yuri said, "The old spot, White Swan Restaurant."

"Tomorrow at noon. Don’t be late."

The call disconnected.

That was it?

That was it.

Come to think of it, it made sense. Yuri wanted to kill Glakov, and Glakov had just as much reason to want Yuri dead.

Yuri believed it was hard to get to Glakov while he was holed up in the GRU base. And Glakov, in turn, probably thought it was impossible to root out Yuri hiding within KGB headquarters.

So it made sense. This was a two-way path: agree on a time and place, then rely on skill—whether through cunning or brute force. Once both parties committed to showing up, this duel to the death became inevitable.

It was quintessentially Russian, steeped in a kind of old-world heroic romanticism—the notion of solving issues through a duel.

Yuri put down the phone, looked at Gao Yi, and after a moment of serious thought, finally said, "I didn’t expect Glakov to be so childish."

Gao Yi couldn’t shake the feeling that Yuri’s words were a thinly veiled jab at him as well. Still, the issue appeared to be resolved, didn’t it?

"As long as Glakov shows up, it’s fine. But I’m not sure if this simplifies the situation or makes it more complicated."

There was no way Glakov would show up alone.

Yuri knew how to find backup, and Glakov wasn’t dumb enough to face the meeting solo. When the time came, who held the upper hand was anyone’s guess.

Here in Moscow, it was Glakov’s home turf. Yuri had the tacit consent of the KGB, but Glakov enjoyed the full support of the GRU. After all, he had direct command over thousands of troops.

That said, Yuri also had his own advantages, having enlisted help from the Inner Five Permanents.

Both sides had their strengths. Who came out on top would depend on who outmaneuvered whom.

Gao Yi was energized now. He turned to the people around him and said, "Alright, this is happening. White Swan Restaurant—where is it?"

"It’s a famous restaurant near Red Square, close to the Kremlin. The food and service aren’t great, but agents love to rendezvous there. We used to go there often too."

"Why is it so popular?"

"Because of its location, which is ideal. It’s right within the Kremlin’s secure guard zone. If any gunfire or other incident occurs, the troops responsible for Kremlin and Red Square security can arrive in two minutes."

Yuri offered this brief explanation before confidently adding, "With the restaurant in such a location, Glakov couldn’t possibly surround us with a large force, nor could he arrive fully armed. Unless he’s planning an armed rebellion, he’d have no choice but to bring just a few people—and not too much gear."

Gao Yi’s eyes lit up. "Are you serious? So this is basically a guaranteed win for us?"

Yuri glanced at Gao Yi, then said suddenly, "Where does your confidence come from? True, Glakov can’t bring too many people or weapons. But even if he only brings handguns, remember, these are elite combat units, seasoned from years of real-life operations. Even in a fistfight, do you think you can handle them all?"

Yuri was proud, but he wasn’t stupid. Every decision he made was based on strength.

"My confidence? Simple: as long as no one uses a gun, I’m absolutely unbeatable!"

Gao Yi, exuding overwhelming conviction, jumped to his feet and said, "Let’s move! We need eyes on White Swan Restaurant right now. If Glakov sends people over, we need to be ready."

Of course, they had to seize every advantage they could.

One more person was an added edge. One more gun tipped the scales. Even an extra bulletproof vest was a plus.

Gao Yi hadn’t expected to get a chance to "hammer" his way out of a situation in Moscow.

But Gao Yi didn’t have a hammer. Dani and the others didn’t even have guns. After all, they hadn’t come to Moscow planning to start a fight or carry out an assassination. Their intent had been more about recruiting assets. Now that they were preparing for combat, sourcing weapons on short notice was no easy task.

"You’ve got a whole morning to search. Right now, the priority is to send someone to monitor White Swan Restaurant. One person isn’t enough; send two. Once you secure suitable weapons, have them delivered there."

"Got it. Someone with sharp eyes for surveillance—who’s in?"

Gao Yi hoped someone would volunteer, but unsurprisingly, the people with the weakest combat skills were chosen.

Gao Yi looked at Dani. Dani looked at Xinfeng.

Each figured the other was less effective in a fight, which meant keeping watch was their best contribution. Both wanted the other to volunteer first.

Gao Yi waved a hand. "Dani and Xinfeng, both of you go. If we get any gear, we’ll send it over."

Dani pouted but said nothing, silently grabbing his coat and heading out.

When assigned, you just had to go—and quickly. Who knew? Arriving a bit earlier might mean catching GRU agents securing advantageous positions.

Xinfeng had no choice but to follow.

Sith smiled confidently, but Yuri frowned, asking, "You mean you don’t even have a single firearm?"

"No. Moscow isn’t our turf. Carrying guns is inconvenient. Besides, we didn’t think we’d need them. What I need now is a hammer. Where can I get one?"

Yuri stared at Gao Yi and remarked, "You’re quite... unique. But using a hammer to deal with an ordinary target is one thing. Against Glakov? A hammer’s practically suicide."

"Even an immortal would crumble under one swing of my hammer!"

Gao Yi let out a breath and urgently said, "Hammer, hammer—I need a hammer. An axe would work too. Where can I find one?"

Sighing, Yuri muttered, "Alexander’s grounded. Other channels... let me think..."

"Enough thinking. Using KGB resources to look for weapons risks tipping them off. After everything you’ve done tonight, who’s going to lend you a weapon?"

Gao Yi had his own connections. With things escalating, there was no reason to hold back.

He dialed Luo Changyou in haste. When the call connected, he asked hurriedly, "I need guns—six handguns, six rifles. Any model works, just make sure there’s enough ammo. Most importantly, I need a hammer. Sturdy, doesn’t have to be big. A small hammer will do. Can you make it happen?"

Luo Changyou lowered his voice, "Sure. Are you coming to pick them up, or should I deliver them?"
