Chapter 459: Chapter 439: The Archive
Gao Yi didn’t want Shaman to feel obliged to purchase unnecessary items just to repay a favor.
But now it seemed Gao Yi had worried unnecessarily, for not only did Shaman need these things, but he also found them extremely useful. He believed Gao Yi thought of him due to their good relationship, which brought him these opportunities.
Gao Yi didn’t want to be both referee and player, but now, be it a coincidence or a misunderstanding, he once again received thanks from Shaman.
What is this, earning money just by standing there, and the person who pays even has to express gratitude – is there any business better than this under the heavens?
Of course, Gao Yi didn’t consider this merely a business transaction; he saw it as an exchange of favors. But now that everything was settled, he certainly wouldn’t miss out on his cut.
Money that should be collected must be collected; not doing so would break the rules, making it difficult for everyone to do business in the future.
But Gao Yi already had more money than he could spend, and now he had yet another source of income. When fortune comes, can it really not be blocked or pushed away?
"No need to thank me, big brother. This...um, actually, I just helped a friend to make a connection."
"I know what you mean. I’ll definitely not involve you in this. Your current status and network are too complicated. I understand. So this is just a business, a business that has nothing to do with you."
Even wanting to tell the truth won’t work; one must take advantage of the situation – reap benefits from both sides, and incidentally receive thanks from both.
Then just gracefully accept it.
"Alright big brother, I won’t disturb you any longer. I’ll arrange for Wind Vane to follow up on the specifics with you."
"Let... let Abdulla handle it."
Shaman sighed gently, then he whispered, "I’ll speak to Abdulla. I was thinking of punishing him for his mistake, but I cannot kill a subordinate who is most loyal to me. Loyalty should be rewarded. If he fails the task given to him, then it only implies I had him in the wrong position."
Okay then.
Another thank-you received.
Is Abdulla now one who should be grateful to Gao Yi for saving his life?
Abdulla was indeed likely to die; Shaman isn’t softhearted, he can be quite ruthless. In anger, he could have killed Abdulla, and even if he didn’t, Abdulla probably would never have a chance to turn his situation around for the rest of his life.
But then Gao Yi asked for leniency, and right after that, Feng Biao presented a mysterious business opportunity. And who to coordinate? Abdulla – not very capable but reliable enough.
Abdulla was just responsible for paying and receiving the goods; that’s something he surely wouldn’t mess up.
Shaman has probably been reflecting on many things in life recently; hence he opened up to Gao Yi, who is closely related without posing any threat to him and can only offer help.
And Gao Yi, of course, needed to respond.
Providing precise emotional value, a tactic learned from Feng Biao, should now be put to good use.
"Big brother, you are absolutely right, placing the right person in the right position is indeed the way of using people for those in high positions. Thank you, big brother, for teaching me. Thank you!"
After expressing his thanks, Gao Yi heaved a sigh filled with emotion, then he murmured, "Besides you, there’s no one else to teach me these things. Most importantly, besides you, no one else can teach me these things. Big brother, I’ve taken it to heart!"
Shaman didn’t say anything.
Perhaps he was pleased that his offhand remark could elicit such a genuine response from Gao Yi.
Thinking about it, is Gao Yi the type to flatter?
No!
Definitely not!
In Shaman’s eyes, Gao Yi is the kind of hero who, wielding a hammer, goes straight to smashing heads with more ease than smashing a watermelon. Could such a hero be a flatterer?
Of course not, right?
So to Shaman, the words of someone like Gao Yi are true words, heartfelt words, proving that Gao Yi truly admires and appreciates him.
This logic is flawless.
Being capable and understanding, Shaman finally found his confidant.
"Brother, I am truly delighted that I could inspire you and be of help. If one day, you’re willing to assist me, I have reserved the position of the director of the National Intelligence Bureau for you."
This was the first time Shaman used an official position to court Gao Yi. No, it can’t yet be called courting because Shaman didn’t require Gao Yi to join him in order to gain something.
Shaman was simply telling Gao Yi, the position is yours if you come, but it’s okay if you don’t; I merely appreciate you, not forcing you.
Having said this, Shaman immediately added, "I have to get busy; we’ll talk more later."
No matter whether Gao Yi was going to refuse politely or accept gladly, he needed to respond promptly. But Shaman didn’t want to put Gao Yi in a difficult position, he didn’t even want Gao Yi to have to answer right now, so he ended the conversation quickly.
This left space for both Gao Yi and himself to bring up the topic again in the future.
This was just fine, no need for Gao Yi to feel troubled.
Taking a long sigh, Gao Yi whispered to himself, "It’s really tough being an honest person."
There was nothing more to be said, Gao Yi returned to his base alone.
Upon seeing Luca and Lucy, what both of them naturally cared about was the progress of the mission.
"So? Can we take action?"
Lucy was only concerned about whether they could move in. She was eager to be of use, but if Gao Yi said it was already taken care of, she would not be surprised or sad.
Gao Yi shook his head and said, "It’s not convenient to make a move for now. Germany has made its stance clear. If we forcefully eliminate the target, it’s not certain we could retreat safely. What we need to do now is to clarify Germany’s actual arrangements. If Germany has deployed rapid-response troops, then we really can’t act recklessly."
After explaining to Lucy, which also served as letting Luca know the current situation, Gao Yi changed the subject and said to Luca, "Feng Biao went home and conveniently brokered a deal, hmm, I just mentioned it to Shaman, but he immediately chose to buy."
As soon as there was talk of business, Luca perked up.
"Oh? How much money, what business?"
"Missiles, worth six hundred and forty million US Dollars, we take a thirty percent commission fee."
Luca immediately became excited, he said in astonishment, "Just the commission fee? We don’t have to take care of shipping or delivery?"
Gao Yi shook his head, then said with a helpless tone, "Nothing at all, just made this phone call and the deal was sealed."
As the middleman, Luca had no chance to get involved, but as the chief financial officer, he knew another income was coming his way.
"Very good, having income is of course very good, I’ll handle it, when will we receive the payment."
"Don’t know yet, Abdulla will come to coordinate, I guess this is giving him another chance to turn things around."
After saying this, Gao Yi suddenly put his hand on Luca’s shoulder, then seriously said, "No matter what, find me a chance to spend money. The more money we have, the less I have places to spend it, which seriously reduces my motivation to earn money. You’re the CFO, find a solution for this."
Luca is good at saving money, but asking him to find ways to spend it is just giving him a hard time.
Luca, looking at Gao Yi with the expression one would give a prodigal son, was simply unbearable for Gao Yi. Finally, under Luca’s gaze, Gao Yi changed his expression and laughed, "I was just joking, haha, hahaha..."
Luca turned and walked away cursing under his breath, while Gao Yi looked towards Lucy. He wanted to say something, but realized Lucy had already turned back to her seat without any intention to join him in his jest.
What joy is there in such a life?
Too smooth a life is really boring.
Gao Yi sighed softly, then picked up the phone and called Feng Biao back.
Feng answered the phone.
Gao Yi said in a listless tone, "I made the call; elder brother said he wants ten sets and an additional forty rounds as reserves, the price as per your quote. Abdulla will be in touch with you, nothing else to discuss."
Feng was not surprised by Gao Yi’s swift action because he knew once Gao Yi made the call, Shaman would definitely give face and buy.
Favors for favors, nothing much to talk about.
"You sound listless, what’s wrong? I always feel like things are not going well with you."
"It’s not going smoothly; there are some troubles now, but I’m planning to put the Germany thing on hold for now. There’s only the logic of being a thief every day; there’s no logic of guarding against thieves every day. If it comes to it, I’ll just handle other matters first and wait till their guard is down to strike back."
Gao Yi shares his plan with Feng, then there was nothing else to talk about.
"Contact me if there’s anything, let’s leave it at that."
"What can happen at my end? Just a phone call will do. If you ask me, if really necessary, just snipe the target from far away to end it."
Feng offered an idea he thought reasonable; after all, this was his expertise. The quickest and most straightforward way he could think of was to take a shot from a distance and eliminate the target outright.
Using mercenaries to do an assassin’s work is also viable.
After all, sniping is also a method that assassins often employ.
"I know, if there’s no other choice, we’ll snipe. If it comes to sniping, I’ll definitely call you. That’s it."
Gao Yi hung up the phone.
If he really had to take a shot to kill the target, Gao Yi wouldn’t call Feng back.
There’s no need; there are plenty of snipers available, and besides, Sith could also be a sniper. Even the stout Dani might serve as a sniper for a stint. One must admit, the skills mastered by this spy definitely surpass that of a mercenary by more than a notch—they have to be a jack of all trades.
What matters now is gathering more intelligence, ideally to get Germany to withdraw the protection of the target. But that’s not something Gao Yi can achieve on his own; he needs Shaman to act.
If Panetta could get the CIA’s help in obtaining detailed intelligence, that would work too. However, whether or not to bother Panetta with this matter is something Gao Yi hasn’t decided yet.
And just as Gao Yi thought of Panetta, Panetta’s call came through directly.
Gao Yi began to suspect that he and Panetta had some sort of telepathy, although he wasn’t sure if the phrase could be used between two men.
As soon as the call was connected, before Gao Yi could speak, Panetta excitedly said, "I’ve got hold of Freedom Wind’s secret files!"
