Chapter 288: Chapter 274 Too Many

Though Joelson was a cunning little man who could twist right and wrong, seriously, how could Gao Yi bear to kill him!

Forget about Gao Yi not wanting to kill Joelson, he would be the first to disagree with anyone who wanted to off Joelson.

"Don’t joke," Gao Yi said. "Why would I kill you? We’re on the same side now."

Gao Yi gestured with his hand and then earnestly added, "Killing you now brings me no advantage. Cooperating with you is how I maximise my benefits. So obviously, I can’t kill you."

Joelson appeared surprised, but Gao Yi knew that Joelson was actually not surprised.

What Joelson said was a strategic retreat, but there was no need to spell out such rudimentary probing and strategy. First of all, it was clear Joelson didn’t want to die, but that was as far as his expectations went—he didn’t hope for more.

So then, it was Gao Yi’s job to broaden Joelson’s thinking.

It wasn’t that Joelson couldn’t think of it; he just didn’t know what Gao Yi was capable of.

Gao Yi hurriedly said, "I can’t kill you now, and I shouldn’t. Instead, I should be worried that you would do everything possible to kill me. As soon as you kill us, you become the hero. You not only complete your mission but also expose a mole. Moreover, after getting rid of us, you can kill and silence witnesses, thus hiding your secrets forever, right?"

Killing Gao Yi and the others was all gain and no loss for Joelson, and just for that reason alone, it would be best for Joelson if he were dead.

Joelson remained silent, unable to reply. If he said yes, then by conventional action, Gao Yi would have simply shot him dead.

Saying no would be insulting the other’s intelligence, and such a pointless remark was better left unsaid.

But Gao Yi had a different solution.

"First we need to shake off the pursuers behind us, eliminate the biggest threat. Then, we can think about what to do next. There’s definitely a way."

Joelson hesitated, then said, "Actually, the solution is simple. We stop the car and make it look like I have you under control, then we get Henry to come over, and as soon as he does, you take him out. Like that, no one in Tripoli can call the shots except for me."

After Joelson finished speaking, he watched Gao Yi, waiting for his response.

Feng Biao couldn’t help saying, "And then with a single command, you get those Libyan soldiers to kill us, and finally, you complete your task and become a CIA hero, right?"

Joelson exhaled and replied, "It requires some trust, but I definitely won’t harm you anymore. Now we’re on the same side. If I want to keep up my own lies, I need your cooperation."

When making a plan based on human nature, you can completely ignore the good aspect of human nature and directly target the evil.

"You’re so eager to kill your own colleague, and your boss is willing to cover up your failures and incompetence, desperate to protect you. It’s not because of how close you and he are, but because you’re both in a terrible situation. If you’re in trouble, your boss is in trouble too, right? So he’s only thinking about self-preservation, and he doesn’t actually care whether you live or die, right?"

Gao Yi suddenly spoke up, then laughed, "Now I have a perfect plan to solve your and your boss’s problems. Not just to clear your boss of any responsibility, but to start by eliminating your colleague, who is also your rival and a witness to your failure—that’s Henry. Secondly, make you irreplaceable in your role and status. Thirdly, you make merits here and your boss benefits as well. Fourthly, completely resolve the predicament for you and your boss. We don’t have time for the specifics, let’s get the first step done. You start."

Taken aback, Joelson looked at Gao Yi, then picked up the radio and said, "I’ll contact Henry first and tell him I’ve got the situation under control, but I can’t just stop the car because Henry might order them to open fire right away. So I’ll tell Henry to stop the pursuit, then I’ll contact the Libyan side. Once Libya no longer obeys Henry’s commands, everything else will be easier."

After briefly explaining what might happen next, Joelson picked up the radio.

Earlier it was collusion with his boss to distort the truth, now it was tricking his colleague into a death trap, which was tougher.

After a moment of contemplation, Joelson picked up the radio and said, "This is Joelson calling Henry, come in if you hear me, over."

There was no response from the radio.

Joelson pressed the transmission button again, "This is Joelson, I’ve taken out the target, controlled the vehicle. Henry, I know you’re listening, respond immediately, over."

After speaking, Joelson immediately said to Gao Yi, "The other radio, the one with the headset, give it to me."

Joelson originally had two radios on him, and now it seemed he had treated the one used to contact his colleagues as less important, while the one to contact the Libyans had an attached headset.

Gao Yi took out the radio he had taken and gave it back to Joelson, who, without hesitation, began to call out, "This is Joelson, I am in command of this operation, I’ve got the situation controlled, I’ll direct the subsequent actions, respond if you receive this, over."

This time, just as Joelson finished his call, an immediate response came through the radio.

"We can only take commands from one person, and right now we can’t confirm if you’re being controlled, so we can’t cooperate. That’s it."

The Libyans responded, but rather rudely, which was somewhat understandable, given they couldn’t accept Joelson’s command since they weren’t sure whether he was making the call under duress.

However, Joelson was satisfied because this was enough.

"Tell your people not to open fire; I’m going to stop the car. If your men shoot without orders and anything unexpected happens, it’s your responsibility, understand?"

After finishing speaking, Joelson turned to Gao Yi and said, "The ones ordered to coordinate with us are from the Libyan Secret Intelligence Bureau. The person I am in contact with now is from the Libyan Secret Intelligence Bureau, but the soldiers they sent are just ordinary troops. Right now, they definitely won’t dare to shoot, not even if Henry orders it, so we’ve got a chance now. At least until Henry is killed, they absolutely won’t dare to shoot."

Gao Yi nodded and replied, "That’s good enough."

"We get out of the car; you deal with Henry directly, and then I can briefly control the situation. Buddy, I’m taking a huge risk here. I went against my superior’s wishes to cooperate with you. If you have any ideas, you’d better let me know now."

Joelson’s superior hoped he would die because a dead witness can’t speak, and then any dirty water could be thrown on Henry.

But if Joelson didn’t die, and he managed to kill Henry in front of many witnesses, then escaping with Gao Yi and his group, no amount of lies would work, especially since the lies being concocted were already full of holes and couldn’t stand up to scrutiny.

But to stay alive, Joelson was willing to go to any lengths.

Gao Yi whispered, "No time to talk, let’s just do it."

After speaking, Gao Yi told Luca, "Slow down and watch the reaction of the pursuers behind us."

Luca slowed down and, realizing that the pursuers didn’t open fire, he stopped the car completely.

Two cars were following them, but now they weren’t ambulances but ordinary sedans.

It was clear that in the original plan of Joelson and his team, there was no intention to do anything outside of the airport.

The idea was to settle everything within the airport, so no vehicles or personnel were prepared for anything beyond that. Now, whether it’s the pursuit outside the airport or the fight itself, it was all improvised.

No wonder they hadn’t been able to turn Gao Yi and his group’s ambulance into a sieve despite the long chase, because the people in the cars behind didn’t have any appropriate weapons ready.

The car stopped, Joelson opened the back door of the ambulance, then he was the first to jump out, and immediately turned with his gun to Gao Yi’s head, ordering him out of the car as well.

Gao Yi exited with his hands on his head and stood beside Joelson.

A few people got out of the two sedans behind them. The leader was a middle-aged man in a T-shirt with a Libyan look. He didn’t have a gun but was holding a walkie-talkie. After getting out of the car, he spread his hands and said to Joelson, "It’s unbelievable, but you did it, you caught him."

Joelson ignored the middle-aged man speaking and yelled at the sedan instead, "Henry! Get out! I know you’re in the car. Your plot has failed, completely failed."

When framing others, you can’t make your accusations too clear.

It’s easier to handle if you keep things vague. Being too specific can easily lead to obvious mistakes being picked apart. Joelson was well-versed in this, so his first action upon getting out of the car was to throw the blame, but he was reluctant to specify what Henry exactly did.

Finally, another person emerged from the sedan behind them.

He looked in his early thirties, an angry man who yelled at Joelson, "Joelson! You shameless bastard, you scoundrel!"

Joelson exhaled softly and whispered, "That’s him."

Gao Yi didn’t move his hands; he simply tilted his head slightly, and then Feng Biao immediately fired a shot from the car.

With the shot fired, the person who couldn’t resist confronting Joelson had a small bullet hole appear on his forehead.

Henry should never have gotten out of the car to confront Joelson. Now that he was dead, Joelson could pin all the blame on him without any reservations.

The Libyans showed some unrest but still didn’t open fire, and the middle-aged man in front immediately yelled anxiously, "This is your problem, we won’t interfere at all. Not at all!"

Joelson took a breath and loudly declared, "Yes, this has nothing to do with you."

While he said it had nothing to do with the Libyans, as soon as the words left his mouth, Joelson leaned in to whisper in Gao Yi’s ear, "I think there are still too many witnesses, don’t you think?"
