Chapter 287: Chapter 273 Turning Black into White

The wickedness of human hearts was fully displayed at this moment. All Gao Yi wanted was to survive, but this Joelson was seeking death—only he intended to use his colleagues as a cushion for his fall.

What a coward, a truly despicable coward, Joelson was.

But Gao Yi was also a man pushed to the edge of a cliff. At this life-or-death juncture, collaboration was just a thought and a word away.

"Alright, let’s collaborate. What should we do?"

Gao Yi didn’t know the specifics of Joelson’s situation, but since they were going to collaborate, leadership was handed over to Joelson. In moments like these, doing these sorts of things, Gao Yi had always dared to delegate authority.

"Let me get up, let me sit up!"

Joelson reached out his hand; he had been lying in the car, and now he demanded to sit up—a simple request that Gao Yi naturally fulfilled immediately.

Gao Yi removed the foot that had been on Joelson’s body and reached out to pull his arm, helping him to sit up.

"Make some room, will you? Are you blind?"

Feng Biao shouted, then obsequiously said to Joelson, "Please sit, please sit."

Joelson took a phone out of his pocket and began to dial rapidly.

He switched the phone to speaker mode so that everyone could hear it.

A moment later, the call connected, and at that moment, Joelson exclaimed, "Sir, it’s Joelson..."

"Joelson! How could you let yourself be captured! What have you encountered, what’s the situation now, and why did this happen? Are you useless? Even the useless wouldn’t do something this stupid!"

The person on the phone berated furiously, but upon a moment’s thought, Gao Yi realized that the caller’s scolding had a technique to it.

It sounded like they were calling Joelson useless, but they also asked about the current situation and why it had happened. Then, within the act of labeling Joelson useless, they used interrogative sentences, and finally, they stated that even the useless couldn’t have botched this badly.

What did this mean? This was providing Joelson with an excuse. Behind the fierce scolding, they were telling Joelson to shift the blame quickly.

The stupidity that even the useless wouldn’t do, yet Joelson had done it, so there were only two possibilities: either Joelson was useless, or someone else had sabotaged it.

Sure enough, Joelson blurted out in desperation, "Boss! There’s a mole! We have a traitor among us. I caught the truck driver; we had the whole Sky Garden cornered on the plane. How could anyone have escaped, how!"

The person on the phone had subtly hinted at shifting the blame, and Joelson didn’t hesitate to do so.

"What happened?"

"I caught the truck driver; the people on the plane could only surrender. But at that moment, the Libyan Defense Army’s airport guards suddenly opened fire, attacking us with heavy machine guns..."

The person on the phone coldly demanded, "Tell it to me clearly, in detail. What happened?"

Joelson immediately corrected himself, "The truck driver had received advance notice; they knew our plan while still on the plane. So, when they disembarked, they were ready, with someone at the airport to meet them."

Gao Yi figured it out.

Joelson was saying that the Libyan Defense Army’s airport guard unit fired upon them, causing the failure of the operation. However, this explanation wouldn’t suffice. So his superior subtly suggested he change his story, find a different reason.

Then Joelson did change his story. This time he avoided blaming the Libyan Defense Army and shifted more blame, or the reason for the failure, onto the mole.

This version pleased the person on the phone, who spoke in an astonished tone, "What? It was like that? How do you know this? Henry reported that you were captured alive by the truck driver, resulting in the complete failure of the operation. So how are you able to call me?"

Without hesitation, Joelson said, "Because the truck driver... let me go..."

"Huh?"

Joelson received the hint; he knew what to say.

Initially, Joelson didn’t have the nerve, but under his superior’s coaching, he knew how to proceed.

"Because I caught the truck driver, not the other way around!"

It was an outrageous reversal of truth to claim that he had captured someone else when he was plainly the one captured. This deceitful act widened Gao Yi’s eyes in disbelief.

The superior spoke gravely, "Then is your current situation safe?"

"The truck driver is right beside me; I..."

Joelson didn’t know what else to say.

"So it’s like that, you succeeded but were thwarted by the internal traitor. Joelson, your merits will not be obliterated. I won’t allow anyone to tarnish your name," the superior spoke as if Joelson was already a dead man.

Irrespective of how Joelson had made this call, whether he was let go or had escaped, the superior seemed convinced that Joelson was doomed.

At that moment, Gao Yi desperately gestured and then pointed toward Joelson’s handgun.

Joelson was extremely surprised, but he immediately drew his own pistol and set the phone on his leg.

Lin Xianghua’s face changed instantly, and just as he was about to curse in anger, he realized that both Gao Yi and Feng Biao were actually firing their guns.

Lin Xianghua was shocked, but after hesitating for a moment, he finally began to unfasten the triangular gun strap from his shoulder.

Gao Yi placed his pistol on the ground, then he said to Joelson, "Let me go, please, I beg you."

At that time, Joelson had taken hold of Gao Yi’s gun, then put his own gun back in its holster, which means during the time he was unconscious and thrown into the car, his gun had always been with him.

Joelson removed the magazine, pulled back the slide, and cleared the chambered round, then immediately said to Gao Yi, "Don’t move, or I’ll shoot you dead."

Gao Yi reached out for Joelson’s pistol, inserting the removed magazine back in because he thought it looked more convincing that way.

Joelson was very aware, he had to act, but he knew to empty the bullets before acting.

However, Gao Yi let him reload the full magazine without emptying the bullets.

Gao Yi was absolutely certain that Joelson had neither the opportunity nor the ability to shoot, because Joelson’s pistol was an M1911, a single-action handgun, which required pulling back the slide to chamber a round before it could fire.

Such an action to rack the slide would provide Gao Yi enough time to kill Joelson ten times over, so what was there to fear?

After reinserting the bullets, Gao Yi nodded, while Joelson picked up the phone and, after hesitating, whispered, "Sir, as I said, I caught the truck driver; I wasn’t caught by him."

His superior was extremely astonished.

"You, you... describe to me what happened."

Joelson thought for a moment then said, "I had the gun pointed at the truck driver’s head; he had no chance to escape. Then I escorted them into the ambulance we had prepared, but at that moment, someone suddenly started shooting at us. Uh, I had no time to look for the position of the shooter, so I pushed the truck driver onto the vehicle and then someone began attacking me. I could only drive away to escape. Is that acceptable?"

"I believe that’s the truth."

Turning black into white, but still a lie so full of holes it couldn’t be faker.

The problem, though, was who would determine the truth from the false.

Joelson’s tone suddenly became serious as he whispered, "Sir, I probably won’t survive this time. Although I caught the truck driver, Henry and his men have been chasing me relentlessly. I’ve identified myself several times, repeatedly requesting him to stop the pursuit, but Henry completely ignored me."

His superior was astounded, "Could it be that Henry is the mole? Joelson! We’ve had a serious problem internally. Is the truck driver really just an assassin? Is Sky Garden truly just an assassin organization? What kind of assassin could kill Captain Naaoi? I now suspect someone within the CIA planned and executed Captain Naaoi’s murder."

Cooperation through the air.

Joelson with a grave expression said, "It must be so. Henry is in league with them. Sir, you must expose this conspiracy."

"Henry isn’t qualified enough. This mole, no, these moles have very high statuses, huge power. Only in this way could they repeatedly conduct their plots under the guise of the Sky Garden."

After finishing, his superior suddenly changed the subject, "This is a private conversation between us, and I believe... this call is unsuitable to be presented as evidence. If we want to expose the mole’s conspiracy, this conversation should be heard by more people, and it would be even better if it could be recorded. But considering the situation on the truck driver’s end and your current predicament, are you allowed to make this call?"

Joelson looked at Gao Yi, then spoke in a deep voice, "Of course, before I get killed by the mole, sir, I’ve caught the truck driver."

"Good, then make the call."

The call ended.

Joelson’s face was expressionless, then he whispered, "I’m certainly going to die, but the ones chasing you will die even faster. Now, I’m going to make a video call, and you will have a chance to escape while I get to vent."

Gao Yi immediately said, "You might not necessarily die, you could just be wounded. Go ahead, make the call, and we’ll cooperate."

After speaking, Gao Yi loudly said, "What are you waiting for? Get down, do you want to show your faces?"

Li Jie turned around and lay on Lin Xianghua’s legs, Lin Xianghua hesitated for a moment, then hurriedly bowed his head, while Feng Biao, looking left and right, simply lay flat in the passageway of the vehicle.

Gao Yi could show his face; he just leaned a bit to the side.

Joelson whispered to Gao Yi, "While I’m making the call, you suddenly reach for the gun to attack me; do whatever you want, just don’t speak."

Gao Yi nodded.

Joelson, holding the gun and phone, began the video call, waiting for the connection. Once it was through, Joelson spoke with righteous indignation, "I am Joelson. I’ve captured the truck driver, but we have a mole among us. I’ve been attacked by leader Henry, who is coming with the Libyan..."

As Joelson panned the camera around the inside of the vehicle, suddenly more bullet holes appeared on the body of the car. The pursuers behind were very cooperative, giving Joelson a heaven-sent opportunity.

Joelson didn’t aim the camera at himself; instead, his tone abruptly changed, speaking with difficulty and pain, "I’ve been hit, damn it..."

At that moment, Gao Yi, sitting on the side, suddenly reached out and grabbed Joelson’s phone, ending the call.

That did it; that settled things.

The atmosphere became slightly awkward as pretending with eyes wide open was something not everyone with a weak psyche could handle.

Gao Yi found it a bit awkward, but Joelson seemed utterly unfazed.

Joelson just sighed and said, "Okay, now you can kill me."
