Chapter 285: Chapter 271: The Miracle of Life
All the conspiracies and tricks came down to the use of force, and ultimately, it was all about strength.
The ambulance wasn’t exactly fast, but it could still reach speeds of seventy to eighty kilometers per hour. In the airport, it seemed to zigzag like a headless fly, ramming into everything in its path, heading straight for the wall. But in the end, it slowed down in front of the perimeter wall. It didn’t stop, just took the corner at a relatively slow speed.
Heading towards the gate, Gao Yi suddenly leaped from the rear of the ambulance and then, as it accelerated away, he sprinted a few steps and vaulted right on top of the wall.
The wall wasn’t very high, less than three meters, at most two and a half or so, a height that posed no challenge to Gao Yi.
Even the Iron Wire atop the wall was somewhat tricky, but not when it was electrified, which would have been intimidating. However, there was a shortage of electricity throughout Libya, with frequent power cuts at the airport—it was unlikely they would waste precious power on the Iron Wire.
Gao Yi chose a place near the middle of the wall, where an iron pillar supported the wire. He grabbed the top of the wall with one hand, his left shoulder giving a painful jolt, but it was strong enough to help his right hand catch the triangular iron brace supporting the wire. Then he leaped up, one-handedly holding the top of the triangle iron, and easily flew over.
The landing was on sandy soil.
Looking along the perimeter wall, one could directly see the machine gun emplacements outside the airport exit.
The security at the airport gates was oriented to face outward, not inside. Thus, there was a machine gun emplacement on each side of the gate, placed on either side of the entrance, with iron wire barricades in the center. Further outside were barriers set up to slow vehicles down, forcing them to pass at low speeds through an S-shaped route.
Unprotected on the inside, the biggest advantage was that Gao Yi and his group had fought inside the airport for so long, stirring up trouble for quite a while, that the machine guns positioned at the gates couldn’t open fire on the unobstructed ambulance.
Gao Yi flipped down from the top of the wall and ran straight toward the exit, sticking close to the base of the wall.
Again, it wasn’t about strength at this time, but about luck.
If anyone turned their head to glance this way, they would have seen Gao Yi at a distance that wasn’t too far.
But the guards at the airport exit were only about a squad in size. Anyone who could move freely had already rushed to the inside of the gate, firing their rifles at the ambulance that was making turns back and forth.
Only four people remained stationed at the machine gun emplacements, two each on both sides, the main and secondary gunner. Now they had their guns aimed at the gate, but unless Luca drove the ambulance into the heavy machine gun’s narrow field of fire, the two guns could do nothing but watch.
Unless the heavy machine gun was moved, taken out of the sandbag-constructed emplacement and pushed inside the gate, but the problem was that the heavy machine guns, weighing over sixty kilograms each, were not so easy to move.
Most crucially, the soldiers guarding the airport exit couldn’t really be described as proactive.
All they wanted was to stay away from the battle, desperately avoiding participation, and they certainly didn’t want to put themselves in danger.
Gao Yi needed to run two hundred meters, a considerable distance.
But Gao Yi, unimpeded, ran crouched all the way across that distance, so smoothly that he could hardly believe it himself.
Closing in on the machine gun emplacement on the right side of the gate, less than thirty meters away, the two shooters inside were still sticking their heads out, looking into the gate. Then one of them was even waving his arms and shouting loudly about something.
Early on, Gao Yi had taken his gun into his hands, but now, he didn’t even know whether he should start shooting or swing his hammer.
It was the machine gunner on the left side of the gate who discovered Gao Yi.
Peeking into the gate, he suddenly turned his head, only to see a shadow hugging the wall and running toward them, already beside the opposite machine gun emplacement.
"Hey..."
He bellowed, instinctively swinging the gun around, but the heavy machine gun muzzle was pointed toward his companion’s position, where Gao Yi had already reached.
Raising his hand, he fired a shot, nearly point-blank, and as Gao Yi leaped over the sandbags into the emplacement, he fired a second shot right at the face of the gesticulating assistant, blowing his head open. As he landed, he had already thrown a Hand Grenade.
Gao Yi fired twice, ducked down, completely hiding his body behind the sandbags, as the machine gun bullets immediately whizzed over his head, followed by the sound of heavy machine gun bullets penetrating the sandbags.
As soon as he released the grenade, it exploded with a deafening boom. The shooting heavy machine gun abruptly went silent.
The heavy machine gun muzzle was pointed right at the gate. Now Gao Yi couldn’t see the ambulance that Luca was driving, but the four soldiers huddled behind the corner of the gate were within an arm’s reach as targets.
When those soldiers looked over in astonishment, Gao Yi opened fire.
Gao Yi had never truly fired a heavy machine gun before. Now, aiming at a distance of no more than ten meters, he held down the trigger of the heavy machine gun and swept it across. He witnessed a brutal scene that he would never forget in his life.
Small caliber bullets left small holes when they hit a body, but heavy machine gun bullets caused not just a large hole but a substantial loss of flesh. If it hit the arm, the arm broke off; if it hit the leg, the leg came apart; and if it hit the torso, it literally could cut a person in half.
After firing roughly fourteen or fifteen rounds, Gao Yi ceased fire. Then he shifted the gun muzzle towards where he approximated the enemy might be and sprayed the red brick wall with a volley of fire.
The bullets pierced the brick wall, blowing shrapnel sideways, and the stray bullets tore into the hidden enemies, causing screams of agony.
There were only about fifteen or sixteen people; with this round of fire, Gao Yi had taken out at least ten.
Unable to see any active enemies, Gao Yi urgently said over the walkie-talkie, "I’ve seized the machine gun position and taken out the guards outside, but I can’t see the people inside. Now I’m going in to join you."
"Can that be done?"
Feng Biao let out an exclamation of surprise; it seemed he hadn’t expected Gao Yi to be able to seize the machine gun position outside the gate.
But after Feng Biao’s exclamation, Luca urgently said, "There are still four people running inside; they’re running around, to the left of the gate, they are escaping!"
A brick wall with a gate roughly five meters wide divided the inside from the outside into two different worlds.
After manning the machine gun for a brief moment without seeing anyone emerge from behind the wall, Gao Yi decisively vaulted over the machine gun emplacement.
There was a hole every twenty-odd centimeters along the brick wall, all made by Gao Yi from the machine gun just before; the thirty-centimeter-thick brick wall seemed no different from paper.
Seeing no one through the bullet holes, Gao Yi dodged past the merlon, peeked out, and then he raised his handgun, continuously firing at several soldiers who didn’t know where to go.
One charge scatters them, one shot breaks them; such facile combat was almost too simple. But at this moment, Gao Yi had neither the privilege nor the confidence to accept surrenders. Even if the enemies were willing to surrender, he had no choice but to be relentless.
There was no place for mercy on the battlefield.
After firing, Gao Yi urgently said, "All clear, let’s move fast."
Luca’s vehicle was already driving toward them.
Even with the vehicle, it took more than a minute to reach the gate. Then Luca slowed down, weaving slowly between the two machine gun positions—that’s when Gao Yi jumped onto the tailgate of the ambulance.
Feng Biao was still looking at the carnage outside when the ambulance left the forced slowdown area and accelerated again, then he said to Gao Yi with relief, "I really didn’t expect it to work like that."
It was an inconceivable plot, but in the end, the person responsible for the net was too inadequate. It was like several hunters setting a trap only for a wild boar with two broken legs to fall in, and despite that, the hunters still managed to get killed by the boar’s thrashing, allowing it to climb out and escape with its remaining two legs.
Seen from the boar’s perspective, it was a miracle of life; from the hunter’s perspective, it was a collective idiocy.
Truth be told, including Gao Yi, no one knew how they had managed to escape.
What’s more important was that nobody knew where to run next.
"Where do we go?"
While Feng Biao was still reflecting, Gao Yi stared into Feng Biao’s eyes and said urgently, "Whether it’s okay or not, we’re all out. The key question is, where do we run to next?"
Feng Biao thought for a moment, then, with a blank face, shook his head and said, "I don’t know."
"How can you not know—you’re the Wind Vane! Think fast, we need to figure out how to escape!"
Saying this, Feng Biao couldn’t help but say, "Mercenaries live in harsh environments, but even I have never been in this situation. Normally at this point, we either surrender or we’re all dead. I’m Wind Vane, the one who runs when things look bad, but I’m not good at running once we’re surrounded."
Gao Yi, tense and clueless, turned to Li Jie.
Li Jie was a smart man, but he too shook his head in bewilderment.
The normal outcome for normal people in this situation is death; who knows what to do in a moment like this?
The operation had gone smoothly, but the outcome was ridiculously off-course, leaving a momentarily paralyzing uncertainty.
At that time, Feng Biao finally said, "We can’t run out of the city. I know Tripoli is surrounded by sea and desert. If we run into the desert, we’re doomed; let’s head into the city center. Run towards where there are people."
"But wouldn’t running towards more people be like jumping into the net?"
"Still better than waiting to die in the desert."
Thinking it over, Gao Yi grabbed the walkie-talkie and said harshly, "Iron Rooster, head towards the city center! Go where the people are."
For now, they would take it one step at a time; enduring a little longer was all that mattered.
Having dealt with the immediate crisis, the next step was to find a way to truly escape. While there was still a chance and time, it was time to make some calls.
Taking out his phone, Gao Yi felt somewhat embarrassed to call Shaman.
First, ask the French if they have any solutions; if Shaman’s help could be avoided as much as possible, then do so. Best to keep some favors in reserve; once depleted, there’d be none left to use.
