Chapter 119: Chapter 109: Rampant
Everyone has their moonlight, and for Gao Yi, it was the sniper rifle.
Pistols were a necessity for Gao Yi’s work, but his favorite was the sniper rifle, which could blow someone away from afar.
The current task was to settle accounts with a swindler, but Gao Yi didn’t hold much hope. So, after meeting a rare, skilled sniper, he wanted to chat more with Cliff.
"What do you think are the tricks of sniping?"
"Tricks?"
Cliff was stunned by Gao Yi’s question, and after thinking for a while, he said bewilderingly, "What counts as a trick? Technique? Uh, my trick is... is... staying calm."
Staying calm, how is that a trick?
A novice and a veteran couldn’t discuss this, as the level gap was too wide, so Cliff found it boring, but Gao Yi found it very interesting.
How about rearing another sniper?
Indeed, having a sniper as cover seemed not bad.
At that moment, Lin Xianghua suddenly said over the walkie-talkie, "Boss, that car in front, does it look like Ali’s car?"
Gao Yi’s train of thought was interrupted, but Lin Xianghua’s car was in front of him, blocking his view, so he couldn’t see.
"I can’t see."
Lin Xianghua’s car moved aside, allowing Gao Yi to see a sedan about a hundred meters ahead on the road.
Both were silver, but the license plate was unclear; in fact, the car model was also unclear, but from afar, the models seemed somewhat similar.
"I can’t see clearly. You guys catch up and check; if it is him, box him in from front and back."
There still wasn’t much hope.
Ali was waiting for customers at the airport, while Gao Yi and his team had left the US Military Base to return to the Green Zone and then left the Green Zone for the airport. They had just left the Green Zone and hadn’t gone far yet; bumping into Ali seemed too coincidental.
Lin Xianghua’s car accelerated. Peter’s car sped up as well, maintaining a distance of about thirty to forty meters. If the car ahead was really driven by Ali, the two vehicles could sandwich him in the middle.
At this point, Gao Yi noticed Lin Xianghua and Peter seemed to have a good understanding.
The lead car overtook, and soon, Lin Xianghua said over the walkie-talkie, "Boss, it’s not Ali, but... why do I feel it’s the same car?"
People changed, but not the car, which was a possibility.
Ali had swindled them yesterday and hadn’t dared to come out to continue today; they might have switched the license plate and the driver. Thinking this was quite probable.
Gao Yi thought for a moment and said, "Are there other people in the car?"
"Yes, passengers. Should we stop and ask? Also, this car seems to be heading towards the checkpoint where we last... parked."
The two large SUVs, still the same, sandwiched another car, which was actually quite conspicuous.
Now Gao Yi could also see inside the sedan. It was obvious there were two passengers in the back, but he couldn’t make out their origin.
The difference between foreigners and locals in Iraq was noticeable, but it depended on the clothing.
As Gao Yi hesitated whether to intercept the car, the Corolla suddenly turned right, in a spot that wasn’t an intersection.
The incident occurred abruptly. Gao Yi hadn’t reacted yet when Peter, who was driving, also suddenly turned the steering wheel sharply and pressed the gas pedal hard, ramming straight into the Corolla.
"Intercept!"
Peter shouted.
At this moment, it became evident Peter and his people really had their act together.
The Corolla was small and light; when it turned towards the entrance of a yard that seemed big enough for a U-turn, if Peter had reacted even a bit slower, the car would have reached in front of the Corolla, making the heavy, large-turn-radius SUV turn back and chase the smaller Corolla difficult.
But Peter kept his attention highly focused. When he saw the Corolla suddenly turn, he chose to strike without hesitation.
No questions asked, no moments of hesitation, and this was after Peter and his people were bound and thrown onto a plane without food or water overnight, arriving in Baghdad tense and anxious, waiting through a morning of the Plunderer being interrogated in a weakened physical and mental state.
A usual person would be confused by now, but Peter could still carry out his duty.
With a bang, Gao Yi felt a jolt, then he was held back by his seatbelt.
The rear of the Corolla was hit, it didn’t flip, but its front turned completely, pressing against Gao Yi’s car.
Both cars stopped. Gao Yi’s car door wouldn’t open, while the Corolla tried squeezing past with the gas pedal floored.
Peter pressed the seatbelt buckle with his right hand, supporting the steering wheel with his left hand. He twisted his head watching the Corolla, pressing the gas pedal, and let the car roar, continuing to push the Corolla against the wall.
Lin Xianghua and his team’s vehicle rapidly reversed, then without any hesitation, smashed into it with a crash. Another vehicle brushed past Gao Yi’s car’s rear and directly collided with the Corolla’s front.
Now, the Corolla was completely immobilized.
Peter pulled open the door and jumped out of the car, while Cliff also opened the door and got out almost simultaneously.
Six people from the two vehicles got out at the same time, except for Gao Yi, whose door wouldn’t open, and he could only watch anxiously.
Peter bent his left elbow and smashed it against the Corolla’s driver-side window with a crack, shattering the glass. The tall, long-armed Cliff reached in and grabbed the driver’s shirt, and when he saw the driver’s right hand moving towards his waist, he leaned half his body in, holding down the driver’s right hand with his left hand, smashing his right elbow down onto the driver’s face.
Lin Xianghua didn’t act, but the glass of the Corolla’s back seat was also smashed. Then, someone opened the door from the inside and dragged two screaming men from the back seat down onto the ground.
In an instant, all three people in the car were dragged out.
Cliff dragged the half-dead driver out of the car door and after frisking him, he pulled out a TT33 pistol and said, "He has a gun!"
No matter who they were, they moved suspiciously; it was better to act first and talk later.
At this moment, everyone looked towards Gao Yi.
Gao Yi awkwardly climbed to the driver’s seat, and after getting out of the car from there, the situation was basically handled.
Gao Yi sighed.
The driver wasn’t Ali, and it was unknown if he was connected with Ali.
Cliff handed him the gun.
Gao Yi looked at the driver and suddenly said, "Yesterday, you scammed... my friend’s stuff. Now, tell me where the stuff is."
There were two Caucasians in the back seat, unknown which country they were from, but clearly not Iraqis.
So Gao Yi used English—if this driver understood, then he was very likely part of Ali’s group.
The driver, his nose bleeding from the beating, heard Gao Yi’s question but shook his head, saying, "I don’t know what you’re talking about..."
Lin Xianghua questioned the two supposed passengers, "Who are you, where do you come from!"
"Russians, we are Russians, here for business."
"How much did you pay for the ride?"
"Twenty dollars..."
So, using an unusually low fare to test if the passengers were in Baghdad for the first time was correct. If the passengers knew there was something wrong with the car at that price and chose not to ride, there wouldn’t be any further issues. But if they did ride, then they were set to be scammed.
This was a sort of filtering mechanism.
Gao Yi was now certain. He aimed his pistol at the driver’s head and said, "I’ll count to three, if you don’t talk, I’ll kill you!"
Just then, Peter suddenly said, "Alert... Uh... Boss, soldiers are coming; we’d better leave!"
Peter’s tone was very urgent. Gao Yi looked up and saw two military vehicles speeding along.
Were they the swindler’s accomplices?
It wasn’t easy to escape now; neither driving away nor running could outpace a Humvee mounted with a machine gun.
Gao Yi made a snap decision. He shouted, "Don’t panic; don’t run, we can’t escape."
No more counting down. Gao Yi grabbed the driver by the shirt and handed him to Peter, saying, "Beat him!"
Gao Yi handed the gun to Cliff, saying, "When I tell you to shoot, shoot."
Cliff wasn’t nervous. He took the gun, holding it in his right hand, but his left hand rested on top of the gun’s slide; whatever the reason for his grip, Gao Yi didn’t know.
Gao Yi stepped forward, standing in the middle of the road and lifted his arms as the military vehicles rushed towards him.
The vehicles slowed down and eventually stopped before Gao Yi. This was a relief, as he had really been afraid they would just run him over.
One person jumped down from the stopped Humvee, but although the car was a Humvee, the person was Iraqi.
Gao Yi felt even more certain. He didn’t speak, but he lowered his raised arms, pointed deliberately towards the license plate of the SUV, and then lightly waved his hands.
The universal gesture: get lost.
The officer who had gotten out looked at Gao Yi, then at the driver being beaten.
Peter swung a powerful slap down, lifting his arm and descending with another slap.
Judging by their attire, Peter and his team were in full tactical gear, save for the guns, but it was full combat gear.
This was meant to be unabashed audacity; without caring if the Secret Action Bureau was willing to stand behind Gao Yi at this moment, these Iraqis certainly wouldn’t know, and what was key was that the two vehicles’ license plates were indeed from the US Army.
The officer clenched his teeth, got back into the vehicle, and the two Humvees turned around, efficiently heading back the way they came.
Watching the Humvees leave, the driver, his mouth bloody from the beating, finally said, "Stop hitting, I’ll talk, I’ll talk..."
Peter didn’t stop; the driver’s shouts were muffled.
"Stop."
Only when Gao Yi shouted did Peter halt his actions.
Gao Yi approached the driver, speaking coldly, "Then talk."
"The stuff is with our boss; it wasn’t me who scammed you, it wasn’t me... stop hitting."
So, it was a gang.
Whether it was a gang or not, finding them was good enough.
