Chapter 210: Chapter 203: Enrollment Part One
Yan Capital University is located in the Linfen District of Kyoto City to the south and can be considered one of the top-tier institutions nationally.
By the time Lin Fei arrived in Linfen District, it was already the afternoon.
At the main entrance of Kyoto University. The somewhat faded red gates, black-and-white university sign, and the ancient-stylistic pointed architecture undoubtedly reflected Yan Capital University’s long history and cultural heritage. The entire entrance to Yan Capital University gave off the impression of a grand official residence from ancient times.
The student flow at the entrance was constant, with people coming and going.
Lin Fei stood on the sidewalk opposite the main entrance of Yan Capital University, carrying a backpack with his admission notice inside.
"Seems like it’s not this way," he muttered softly, taking out his admission notice from the bag and checking it. Since getting off the plane, Lin Fei first settled Shuang’er into a hotel and then slowly headed to the university. Yuan Yicheng did not come with him; Lin Fei needed him to stay in Southwest Province to secure the situation there. Moreover, his friends Xiao Ling, Chen Chen, Lu Jun, and others didn’t come to see him off at his request. Only Shuang’er accompanied him. Jiang Nan and the others only saw him off to the Ping City train station and stopped there. Shuang’er was the only one who insisted on accompanying him.
Upon reaching the entrance of Yan Capital, Lin Fei realized he had found the wrong gate.
"Are you a new student this year? The registration entrance is not this way," a somewhat husky female voice came from behind Lin Fei.
Lin Fei turned around to see who had spoken. She was a young woman shorter than himself, with an ordinary appearance but with an aura of maturity that suggested she had been tempered by society, clearly not a naïve girl fresh to university life.
"Yes, I’m a new student this year, but it seems I got the wrong gate," Lin Fei said with a polite smile.
"Come with me. The main entrance is on the other side," the young woman said rather generously.
Lin Fei was happy to have someone show the way.
As they walked through the gate and took the winding path to the left, they chatted.
During the conversation, Lin Fei learned that this young woman, Wang Hanmei, was a member of the student council involved in orientation work. She was just returning to campus when she saw Lin Fei taking out his admission notice and realized he must be a new student. She decided to approach him and lead him to the registration area.
Inside Yan Capital University, it felt less like a university environment and more like a top-level ancient official residence, with pavilions, towers, bridges over streams, and lush trees arranged in harmony. You had to walk quite a distance before you could glimpse the modern buildings through the gaps in the woods.
The two walked side by side on the path beside a small lake, with the path extending into the lake connecting to a small pavilion with a red roof. Inside, two or three students were reciting vocabulary words loudly, both male and female.
As they continued along the path, they often passed by students in a hurry carrying bags full of textbooks. Lin Fei could feel a strong academic atmosphere washing over him.
Wang Hanmei continued to introduce the campus while they walked.
"Our Yan Capital University is considered one of the top few in Kyoto in terms of overall strength, alongside Jinghua and Kyoto universities. Those are the only ones a little better than ours, of course, that’s something we only say among ourselves since every university has its strengths. As for the size of our campus... from the West Gate we just entered to the East Gate is a complete dividing line separating the entire campus into northern and southern sections. If we students need to travel from the south to the north campus, it’s best to take the campus bus on a regular day. It’s about the same pace as public transit, a round trip takes over ten minutes. Pretty big, right?" Wang Hanmei said with a hint of pride.
"Indeed, it’s quite large," Lin Fei nodded.
"What’s your major? Although new students report at the main entrance on the East side, some faculties are still quite far apart," Wang Hanmei asked.
"I’m in the Physics Department, theoretical physics," Lin Fei replied.
"Physics, huh," Wang Hanmei thought for a moment, "your department is not far from ours in the Life Sciences. It’s on the way. By the way, which province are you from? Your Mandarin sounds like a southern accent, doesn’t it?"
"Yes," Lin Fei nodded, "I’m from..."
The two walked and talked.
Wang Hanmei is a local from Kyoto, making her Lin Fei’s senior by two years at Yan Capital University. She majors in Genetic Engineering in the Department of Life Sciences—a pretty advanced field. However, Wang Hanmei complained that being advanced does not guarantee an easy career path post-graduation. Because of its specialization, the job opportunities are narrow, making it challenging to find positions.
The two followed the campus paths toward the main entrance. As they got closer, there were fewer students and more incoming freshmen with distinctive styles from different provinces across the country. Many were accompanied by their parents, some with both parents and others with either their father or mother. As the area widened, they could hear a mix of local dialects and accents from all over the country.
Students and parents from the same province stood together, conversing in their local dialects. The voices of different provincial dialects surrounded the two of them, growing louder.
Wang Hanmei occasionally encountered acquaintances; several students guiding the new students and their parents greeted her along the way.
Lin Fei observed that if the new student was male, they would definitely be received by a female senior; if the new student was female, the reception would definitely be by a male senior. It seemed everyone had an unspoken agreement on this distribution.
