Chapter 133: Chapter 133: What Right Do You Have to Be Angry?!
"I have to say, Tongtong, your shy look really doesn’t seem like you!" Luo Yifan daringly added another comment.
Le Tong took a deep breath, suppressing the urge to turn and leave.
"Luo Yifan, you’re doing it on purpose, aren’t you?!"
This time, Le Tong was truly angry. She discreetly pulled her hand out of Luo Yifan’s grasp and turned to stride off the stage.
However, despite being so angry she wanted to curse, she still maintained a charming, gentle smile towards everyone.
Luo Yifan wasn’t annoyed. He kept his pace, quickly catching up with her, grabbing her hand again before she could pull away.
In front of hundreds of guests, Le Tong couldn’t publicly contradict him. In retaliation, she pinched his palm hard a few times.
Luo Yifan kept smiling and led her towards the guests.
"Tongtong, this is my brother!"
Luo Yifan introduced a slightly older man to her.
Great! This isn’t just a birthday party; it’s clearly a meet-the-parents event!
"Hello, Brother Luo! I’m Le Tong, Yuan’er’s classmate and good friend!"
Le Tong tried her best to distance herself from Luo Yifan, but it was to little avail.
"Hello, I often hear Yifan mention you!"
This Brother Luo was the current president of the Luo Family. He appeared clever but looked at Luo Yifan with the affection of a doting father.
"Really? Yifan must have said I’m crazy just like Yuan’er, right?"
Even though she didn’t feel like dealing with Luo Yifan’s close relatives, it was part of her task today. She owed Yifan a debt and couldn’t choose how to repay it.
"Oh, is that what Yifan told you?"
Le Tong nodded with a smile, "Of course, he used to call me Big Crazy and Yuan’er Little Crazy!"
This nickname was often on Luo Yifan’s lips when Le Tong first entered university.
Luo Yifan looked at Le Tong with a smile, "Tongtong, you still remember that? I thought you had forgotten!"
Back then, Le Tong was a joyful girl like a little bird, sensible yet outgoing and optimistic, playing and laughing as wildly as a madwoman.
However, that playful, laughter-filled, adorably candid girl vanished without a trace after her mother fell ill, especially when she returned after taking a few months off to care for her mom, treating him as a mere stranger.
At that time, he only thought she was in a bad mood because of her mother’s illness. But even later, when her mother got better, she never interacted with him as freely as before.
He felt like she had grown up entirely during those few months. Compared to Yuan’er, and even more than himself, she had become mature and worldly.
Yet, despite going through such pain, she never spoke a word of hardship to him or Yuan’er. Even when asked, she would only reply, "I’m fine! I’m great! No need to worry!" comforting them instead.
Back then, he couldn’t fully comprehend her pain. Only after experiencing life’s hardships post-work did he gradually understand that what she went through during that time may have been far more difficult than he and Yuan’er had imagined!
Le Tong blinked and smiled, "How could I forget?!"
Indeed, it was a turning point in her life; how could she forget it?
Before her mother’s diagnosis, the mother and daughter’s life, though modest, was happy.
However, upon learning that her mother would die without surgery, all of Le Tong’s happiness seemed to be drained away in that instant!
Her joy vanished overnight, leaving only the suffocating weight and fear. In that state, how could she have the mind to frolic around with Yuan’er and Yifan siblings?
Watching her carefree smile, Luo Yifan felt his heart tighten as if bound by strings. Her words, "How could I forget," revealed the burden of her past sorrows; to others, it might have sounded like she was reminiscing about happy times.
The ability to face others with such a bright smile despite experiencing great pain made his heart ache!
Often, he wished to cherish her like a treasure in his hands and heart, but over the years, it seemed intentional on her part: he would advance a step, and she would retreat three; he would step back, and she wouldn’t advance, yet at least she’d remain where she was.
After several attempts, he could only stay put, maintaining a balanced relationship with her—better than friends, but never quite romantic.
He could only bury his feelings deep within, not daring to express too much affection or kindness, fearing he might scare her off like a startled bird.
"No point talking about the past. Today’s Tongtong, is the most beautiful and charming Tongtong I’ve ever seen!"
Luo Yifan handed her a glass, steering the conversation back to the present.
Not only was Le Tong unwilling to revisit those dark days, but he also couldn’t bear to make her recall them.
Le Tong raised her glass, clinked it with his, and took a light sip before leaning over to whisper in his ear.
"No need to sweet-talk me; I won’t back out on my promise."
Her words felt like a bucket of cold water extinguishing Luo Yifan’s affectionate thoughts. She hinted for him not to overthink, indicating her presence wasn’t for him or to give hope, but simply to repay a debt.
Luo Yifan wanted to resent her, yet found himself pitifully incapable of such feelings.
He forced a wry smile, intending to speak, when he heard a cold voice.
"Yifan, won’t you introduce your girlfriend to me?"
Ji Rui stood between them with a drink, scrutinizing Le Tong as if she were a stranger.
Le Ting visibly paused and turned to face Ji Rui’s indifferent gaze.
What’s he doing? Is it intentional?
From what Le Tong knew of him, he was either being humorous or angry.
But for someone as rigid and serious as President Ji, humor seemed unlikely, so clearly, he was angry.
But what’s he upset about?
She was merely his employee, not his slave. Her life outside of work was her own, and who she spent time with in her personal time was none of his concern.
He was just her boss, so what right did he have to be angry?!
