Chapter 472: 472

Xue Han looked worriedly at Wu Ning, sighing in her heart. Wu Ning, her sister, had drawn a marriage fortune, but it was the worst one. Unfortunately, Wu Ning couldn’t understand the fortune’s written interpretation and didn’t know what was on it.

Wu Ning shook her head, "Auntie, I’m fine."

Zhulan didn’t believe her for a second. She could tell by looking at Xue Han that the girl was helping Wu Ning keep something secret.

Lady Tao saw the flushed face of Su Xuan and understood; she had drawn a good fortune.

Zhulan, having rested, stood up, "It’s getting late; let’s also head back."

Lady Tao smiled, "Alright."

Descending the mountain was no easy task. Zhulan felt dizzy and feared she might step into thin air and tumble down, but thankfully Lady Li and the old nurse were by her side. Once in the carriage, Zhulan didn’t want to move a muscle. This trip had truly been harrowing.

Upon returning to the mansion, Lady Li hurried back to see her son, and Wu Ning was intent on returning to her quarter, leaving only Xue Han to keep Zhulan company.

Zhulan teased her son, who didn’t recognize people yet but could identify his mother by her scent. Having not seen Zhulan all morning, the little one had felt so aggrieved that he cried.

Zhulan smiled tenderly, feeling joyful in her heart. This was what being a mother felt like. She patiently soothed him for quite a while until, feeling aggrieved, the little one closed his eyes and fell asleep.

After settling the child, Zhulan asked Xue Han, "Have you found out anything?"

Xue Han’s gaze shifted from her little brother as she replied, "Mother, Su Xuan is eighteen, could you be mistaken?"

In the temple, when Mother had patted her hand, she got the hint and conscientiously probed for information. But judging by the girl’s age, she didn’t think it was possible.

Zhulan never expected Su Xuan to be eighteen; she had assumed Su Xuan’s assertive appearance made her seem older, "Eighteen already, why isn’t she married yet?"

It was indeed rare for someone to be unmarried at eighteen in ancient times.

Xue Han explained, "Well, Su Xuan said her parents passed away early and she’s the only one left in her family."

Su Xuan, like Sister Wu, bore the reputation of being the death of her parents, a bad reputation which doesn’t bode well for marriage prospects.

Zhulan narrowed her eyes, "No brothers?"

Xue Han nodded, "That’s what Sister Su said."

Zhulan didn’t believe in the curse of causing parental death. If Wu Ning had been a suitable match for Chang Zhi, she would have arranged their marriage long ago, but regrettably, they didn’t suit each other.

Xue Han tensed, the longer Mother pondered, did it mean she thought Sister Su was quite good?

Xue Han asked, "Mother, doesn’t the Fourth Brother already fancy a girl?"

So, you should stop considering it, Mother.

Of course, Zhulan remembered, yet she felt that Miss Su was quite suitable for Chang Zhi. It didn’t matter if a girl was two years older; girls mature mentally earlier anyway, growing more mature with age. Moreover, Miss Su managed to grow up safely on her own and seemed quite comfortable with life, showing no small amount of capability. In the end, being without parents, she had no entanglements with various powers, truly an ideal daughter-in-law in her eyes.

Zhulan sighed, she did think Su Xuan was a good match, it was just that Chang Zhi’s feelings had to be considered, "You’ve also had a long day; go get some rest."

Xue Han nodded, "Yeah."

That evening, Zhulan discussed Su Xuan’s situation with Zhou Shuren, who also found her quite suitable, "Why don’t you ask Chang Zhi what he thinks?"

Zhulan waved her hand dismissively, "The boy has just returned; it’s not urgent."

Zhou Shuren, "As long as you have a plan."

Zhulan rubbed her forehead, "You should rest early too, stop staying up."

Zhou Shuren massaged his shoulders, "I’ll read a little longer; you go to sleep first."

Zhulan yawned. She was truly exhausted, "Good."

The next morning after breakfast, Wu Ning came to the main courtyard. Her complexion had improved a lot. She lowered her head and said, "Auntie, I would like to go back home."

She should have gone back earlier, but it was because her elder brother had written and asked her not to return for their grandparents’ anniversary that she stayed. Now she missed home, she missed her brothers, and she wanted to stay home for a while.

Zhulan scrutinized Wu Ning. The girl was hiding something, but perhaps a stay at home would be beneficial, "So, you’re homesick. When do you plan to leave?"

Wu Ning’s smile deepened, as she had been apprehensive her aunt might disagree. Joyfully, she said, "I’ll pack up, and I can leave the day after tomorrow."

Zhulan, "Alright, you’ll leave the day after tomorrow. I’ll arrange for a young servant to accompany you."

Wu Ning’s eyes reddened, and she leaned on her aunt’s lap, "Thank you, Auntie."

Zhulan stroked Wu Ning’s hair, hoping that after returning home, the child would come to terms with life. Zhulan wasn’t worried about Wu Ning being mistreated at home. With Zhou Shuren’s changed status, Wu Ming had benefitted greatly, and after several years of Wu Ming’s efforts, no one would dare trouble him anymore.

However, she still had to arrange a proper entourage, so no one would think Wu Ning was being sent away in disgrace.

Wu Ning held back her tears, but her eyes were still red, and going out made it worse. She walked with lowered gaze and, upon hearing a noise, looked up to see Chang Lian and Shi Qing among others. She quickly paid her respects and hurriedly retreated.

Chang Lian muttered, "Why was that girl crying?"

Shi Qing took a longer look. Despite the Zhou family’s kindness, she remained an outsider. The Zhou daughters were continually receiving invitations, but Wu Ning was never invited. Shi Qing clenched his hands; what was he so worried about?

Chang Lian turned around and nearly collided with someone. It was Chang Zhi, who was on the ground. Chang Lian frowned, "Were you chased by a dog? Rushing around without looking, today you bumped into me, but what if it were a guest?"

Chang Zhi instantly jumped up, not bothering to dust off his robe, and hastily took cover behind Chang Lian. Chang Lian wanted to look back, but Chang Zhi was frantic, "Don’t turn around, be quiet."

Chang Lian blankly paused, what was wrong with the boy?
