Chapter 471: Chapter 471 The Mother-in-law and Daughter-in-law_1
Mrs. Yuguang glanced at the nervous maid and introduced, hesitantly, "She is my cousin’s daughter, Su Xuan."
Zhulan took several glances at the girl, who was about the same height as her, with a vivacious and bold appearance—truly a bold young lady. Zhulan always had a fondness for confident and bold characters and laughed, "This is my daughter, Xue Han."
Su Xuan nodded nervously and greeted, "Hello."
Xue Han’s mouth curled into a smile, "Hello, Sister Su."
Mrs. Yuguang felt Lady Li looking at her with an unnaturally strained expression. She originally wanted just to enjoy the spectacle and had not intended to interfere. However, watching the girl beside her, she sighed inwardly, "It’s getting late, we should also head up!"
Zhulan patted her daughter’s hand and then said, "Alright."
"Please, after you, sister."
Zhulan did not stand on ceremony; holding a higher rank than Mrs. Yuguang, she took the lead.
Climbing the more than three hundred steps of the temple, Zhulan felt her legs wobble on reaching the top. It had been a long time since she had exercised, and the ascent made her throat sore and her chest uncomfortable.
Zhulan looked sideways at Mrs. Yuguang, who also lived a life of ’not venturing out the front door or the second’, yet she had only broken a bit of sweat.
Mrs. Yuguang smiled while explaining, "I come to pray at the temple every month, so I’m used to it."
Zhulan looked back at her daughter and Wu Ning. Both girls, not used to climbing stairs, would have found a place to sit down if it weren’t for the maids supporting them.
Instead, Miss Su stood unbothered, neither flushed nor out of breath.
Zhulan’s eyes deepened, "Miss Su, have you trained in martial arts?"
Su Xuan clutched her handkerchief, suppressing the nervousness in her heart, "Yes, I’ve trained a little."
Zhulan withdrew her gaze, confused. This girl seemed to be afraid of her? That couldn’t be right; she was usually on point with people, and this girl looked like she was bold. Zhulan was taken aback for a moment—Su Xuan had not offered her a greeting, yet even Xue Han had to greet Mrs. Yuguang.
Zhulan watched Mrs. Yuguang with amusement, her attention shifting more to Miss Su. Upon closer inspection, she realized the girl was adorned with fine items, even the gemstone on the gold bangle was dazzlingly ostentatious.
Mrs. Yuguang noticed Lady Li’s gaze on Su Xuan and cleared her throat, "We’ve rested for a while. Shall we go inside the temple?"
Zhulan nodded, "Yes."
Buddha Temple, living up to its reputation, was grand in architecture. Numerous Buddha statues were carved on the mountain, and the scenery within the temple was also quite splendid, capturing all of Zhulan’s attention.
As a regular visitor, Mrs. Yuguang guided them through to the main hall to worship. Zhulan was just accompanying—they weren’t insincere, but she felt somewhat apprehensive about this place.
Fortunately, Zhulan was good at pretending, and Mrs. Yuguang did not notice. Zhulan accompanied Mrs. Yuguang in praying, and the young ladies were all sent away.
After kneeling for a while, Zhulan rose, feeling unsteady.
Lady Li rushed to support her, "Mother."
Zhulan took a moment to recover, "It’s alright now."
Lady Li showed a face full of concern. "Mother, let’s go sit outside for a while, shall we?" she suggested, echoing the worry that her mother-in-law had only recently emerged from childbirth. Although she seemed fine, it would take years for her body to fully recover.
Mrs. Yuguang looked at Lady Li and couldn’t help thinking of her own daughter-in-law, perfect in observing rules, respectful and fearful of her as the mother-in-law, never becoming close. She figured the woman probably wished for her early demise to avoid her interference.
Mrs. Yuguang was not jealous anyway; she had her own daughter and did not need her daughter-in-law’s affection. However, Lady Li’s unexpected behavior caught Mrs. Yuguang off guard. Seeing Lady Li go to fetch water, she whispered, "You’re too good to your daughter-in-law. That won’t do."
Zhulan, "...."
It was a matter of perspective. Mrs. Yuguang represented the traditional mother-in-law group that was often at odds with daughters-in-law. Zhulan had heard that Mrs. Yuguang had arranged several concubines for her son.
Seeing Lady Li’s forced laughter, Mrs. Yuguang dropped the topic. She felt she did not see eye to eye with Lady Li regarding daughters-in-law and was contemplating internally. She found Lady Li’s elder daughter-in-law chubby with unremarkable looks, perhaps suitable for bearing sons. Mrs. Yuguang decided to find a plump and fertile match for her son as well.
Sighing inside, Mrs. Yuguang lamented, "How is it that the Wang family’s lineage isn’t prosperous? My son has been married for nine years and only has one son. I truly envy you; you already have four grandsons."
Zhulan, "Children and grandchildren will have their own fortunes; what’s meant to come will come in its own time. Don’t worry too much about it."
Mrs. Yuguang saw Lady Li returning with water and promptly ended the conversation with a smile.
Lady Li carefully held the water, "Mother, you can’t drink cold water. I asked for hot water, please drink it while it’s hot."
Zhulan took the tea bowl and noticed Lady Li’s reddened hands, "Look, you’ve scalded your hands."
Lady Li turned her hands away, "It’s nothing, I have tough skin. It’ll be fine soon. Mother, please drink. The tea bowl has been scalded with hot water."
Zhulan felt a warmth in her heart, "Hmm."
Mrs. Yuguang averted her eyes, alright, she admitted to feeling a bit uncomfortable. They were both daughters-in-law, but why was there such a disparity?
If Zhulan could hear Mrs. Yuguang’s thoughts, she would surely clarify for her—sincerity begets sincerity. Who would cherish a mother-in-law that’s always imposing concubines? It was already good fortune not to secretly wish for her early demise.
After waiting a while, Xue Han and the other young ladies came back together. Xue Han said excitedly, "Mother, I’ve obtained a peace charm for my brother."
Zhulan accepted the peace charm, "Mother thanks you on his behalf."
Zhulan then looked at Wu Ning, who was pale, "Are you not feeling well?"
