Chapter 670: Chapter 671 The Real Heiress Does Not Return to Her Place 3_1
Desk-mate Yang Xue, upon hearing Zhang Li’s words, immediately understood, "Right, we need to study hard."
"Your grades could actually be good enough to get into an even better school if you put in a bit more effort."
Yang Xue knew Zhang Li’s grades were decent; it was just that the death of her parents had taken its toll on her.
"You too, let’s work hard together." Zhang Li picked up a workbook and started grinding through problems.
The original owner had bought a lot of revision materials that had gone unused, but now that they were in her hands, she certainly wouldn’t let them go to waste.
Really, with so many blank workbooks at home untouched, why still go out and buy more? If she hadn’t gone out to buy them, wouldn’t she have been spared from this mess?
While furiously tackling problems, Zhang Li’s mind wandered. Yang Xue knew her desk-mate was working on problems, but she didn’t expect her to be that fast.
At first, she wondered if Zhang Li was just scribbling randomly, but after seeing the steps she worked out, she knew that wasn’t the case.
Yang Xue stared blankly at Zhang Li, who only realized she was being watched after finishing a test paper, "What’s up?"
There shouldn’t be any problems; otherwise, why would she stare? "If you keep this up, I’ll really get very shy."
"Can I take a look at your workbook?" Yang Xue couldn’t help but ask.
"No problem." Zhang Li handed it over with generosity.
As Yang Xue flipped through the workbook, she noticed that quite a lot had been done. Thinking for a moment, she asked quietly, "Did you hire a tutor?"
Hire a tutor? Zhang Li found that funny, "My family can’t afford that."
Yang Xue, remembering Zhang Li’s family situation, apologized profusely, "I’m sorry, I’m so sorry."
"It’s okay." Zhang Li asked softly, "Did you hire a tutor?"
Yang Xue nodded, "Yes, I crammed in extra classes over the summer."
"You might not know, but actually, many of our classmates are taking extra classes."
Yang Xue was actually quite a chatterbox. It’s just that she had never found anyone to talk to before, and since Zhang Li was always seriously reading and solving problems, she had to hold it back.
"It’s normal, since we only have one more year left." Nowadays, hiring tutors is done furtively, as if speaking about it suggests that a child’s grades are poor, otherwise there would be no need for a tutor.
But in the future, hiring tutors and attending tutoring classes would be very common; a family whose child didn’t have a tutor or attend extra classes would be the odd one out.
"Yeah, just one more year," Yang Xue then complained about how expensive tutors were these days.
Zhang Li listened quietly, "So you need to study hard and let your parents know that the money they have spent is worthwhile."
Yang Xue uttered affirmatively, "I want to go to F University."
"That’s a good school." This too was once the little girl’s dream university, a prestigious institution that she later found out her biological parents and older brother had attended.
Unfortunately, she never got the chance to attend because she didn’t take the college entrance exams, having been hospitalized with diarrhea and weakness on the eve of the exams.
The reason was simple: the young lady had been worried that the little girl might get into F University.
In this lifetime, naturally, she would not consider F University, or any school related to that city, as her goal.
"I haven’t decided yet, probably will go to a university in the provincial capital."
"After all, the cost of living there is lower." Zhang Li knew many would urge her to consider more renowned universities given her good grades, which shouldn’t be wasted.
She deflected it simply by saying that living expenses were lower, which was enough to keep people at bay.
Yang Xue, learning of Zhang Li’s intention to go to a university in the provincial city, really wanted to persuade her to think it over again.
Such great results, and only considering universities in the provincial capital, truly seem like a waste.
But after hearing the reason, what could Yang Xue say? They were all high school students, they all understood, "There are also good universities in the provincial city."
Zhang Li hummed in agreement, "Right, as long as I am capable, it doesn’t really matter where I go to university."
Ever since chatting with Yang Xue, the two of them started communicating more, especially after Yang Xue discovered that Zhang Li was very good at math, while her own skills were not as strong. She would often ask for help.
As the days went by, Zhang Li became increasingly wary; she didn’t know whether her arrival would lead things down a different path.
In any case, these days, other than school and home, the furthest she went was to the market.
As for any places beyond these, she had no desire to visit them.
Under Zhang Li’s guidance, Yang Xue breezed through a type of problem she had always thought she couldn’t solve and was genuinely stunned.
"I, I actually solved it."
Looking at her excited state, "Yes," Zhang Li was truly calm. These problems, though somewhat difficult in her eyes, weren’t really all that challenging.
Yang Xue looked at Zhang Li’s calm demeanor and thought, okay, it’s just one problem solved, why the excitement.
There really wasn’t anything to be excited about. Remembering what her parents mentioned yesterday, "Zhang Li, can I come to your place this weekend?"
"Morning or afternoon is fine." Although it was already a two-day weekend, senior year students didn’t have that luxury.
Saturday meant classes at school no matter what, unless there was a family situation that excused one from attending.
"Come to my place?" Zhang Li looked at Yang Xue perplexedly, not understanding why after seeing each other for six days, she would want to see her again on Sunday.
"Aren’t you supposed to have extra classes on the weekend?" She had classes six days a week, but many people, including Yang Xue, really had just one day off, with classes on Sunday as well.
Zhang Li wouldn’t have brought up the matter if Yang Xue hadn’t, and upon mentioning it, Yang Xue sighed helplessly, "My tutor has been in poor health recently."
She had chosen that tutor because of their extensive teaching experience and the record of producing students with excellent grades.
"I initially thought that under the teacher’s guidance, my grades would improve dramatically."
"What I didn’t expect was that their grades weren’t very good."
"And they’re frequently unwell." Yang Xue sighed again, "Now, trying to find another good teacher is really difficult."
"Of course it is. There are only so many good teachers, and there are many in need of tutoring. In a case of more monks than porridge, finding someone to fill the spot is definitely tough."
Zhang Li said nonchalantly, after all, she had no money to hire a tutor, nor did she see the necessity.
Yang Xue glanced at Zhang Li, "Well, I told my parents about your situation, and they said, they said..."
After all, as a kid, it was embarrassing to talk about this with a classmate.
They said what? Zhang Li gave Yang Xue a look, trying to guess what she wanted to say. After some thought, with a hint of jest, she said,
"They can’t possibly want me to be your home tutor."
She really just said it off the cuff, thinking the likelihood was slim.
It was an offhand remark for Zhang Li, but in Yang Xue’s ears, it meant something else entirely, "Right, right, that’s exactly what they mean."
Ah, no way, Zhang Li was stunned, not knowing how to respond.
It took her a while to manage a forced smile, "I’m just a student too, your classmate."
"I know."
"But I understand everything you teach." Yang Xue acknowledged the tutor was not bad, but her teaching method wasn’t as good as Zhang Li’s.
