Chapter 611: Chapter 612 Sister Like Mother 29_1

"Went to withdraw money?" Zhao Lei had thought that Huang Man would be writing, but to his surprise, she wasn’t at home.

"Yeah, the money has already been mailed over, I couldn’t just ignore it."

"It’s not that much, only 200." Zhao Lei noticed something was off with Huang Man’s expression, "That was just something I said, it’s really not a small amount of money."

"I’ll earn more in the future."

"How come you never ask how I did on my tests." Zhao Lei changed the subject.

"I know you must’ve done well." Seeing how relaxed Zhao Lei looked, it seemed he had probably performed well.

Zhao Lei smiled, "Right, you’re the one who has confidence in me."

He didn’t care that his mom was right there, and he stood up, trying to mimic the expression his mom had when he had come out before.

Mrs. Zhao watched Zhao Lei’s antics and didn’t know what to say anymore. To please a girl, he even disregarded his own mother’s feelings.

She could only endlessly chant to herself, "My biological child, my biological child, my biological child, he did well on this exam."

Otherwise, she wouldn’t let this kid off the hook. Honestly, as an old mother, how could she not worry?

"I’m aware of your abilities; you’re not stupid, and you can focus on your studies if you choose to."

"I have confidence in you," Huang Man knew that Mrs. Zhao must be quite unhappy now.

But that had nothing to do with her; she was just a tutor, and she shouldn’t meddle with their mother-son issues.

She had never discussed the Zhao Family’s affairs with Zhao Lei. As a qualified tutor, she shouldn’t cross the line but simply focus on her responsibilities.

But she did observe, like how Father Zhao barely ever came home.

Don’t ask her how she knows; the reason is simple, even a busy person, no matter how much they travel around, couldn’t stay away from home like that.

If a man came home, there would definitely be traces in the house, but there were none.

Mrs. Zhao occasionally complained, saying men don’t care about their families. She dared to say that even if Father Zhao was busy, he couldn’t possibly be so busy as to not have time to come home.

Unless there was only one possibility, and that was Father Zhao had another family outside. To Mrs. Zhao, the official wife, he would just be providing support.

Unable to win over her husband’s affection, Mrs. Zhao could only hope for Zhao Lei to be successful, so that looking at Zhao Lei’s future, Father Zhao wouldn’t let her step down from her position as Mrs. Zhao.

With the father being busy and indifferent to Zhao Lei’s existence, Mrs. Zhao did care for Zhao Lei a lot, but it was also based on needing her son to secure her position.

Their mother-son relationship, to put it nicely, is rather formal, without many conflicts.

To put it unpleasantly, their relationship is estranged and cold.

Sometimes, Huang Man wondered what Zhao Lei would become if she hadn’t appeared in his life. Back then, he was indifferent, or perhaps had little hope for the future.

Compared to that time, he is now so much more outgoing than when she first met him.

However, such a change must be very upsetting to Mrs. Zhao, feeling that this son isn’t the perfect son she had envisioned.

If Huang Man cares, how could Zhao Lei not care about Mother Zhao? He knew that ever since his academic results improved, Mother Zhao’s heart had begun to stir, wanting to change him in various ways.

Like becoming the son she had envisioned in her mind. Zhao Lei was aware of her concerns. Wasn’t she afraid that she would one day be dethroned from her position as Mrs. Zhao?

But he was also tired because he knew all too well that once he gave in, Mother Zhao would keep pressing him relentlessly.

"Mom, my grades will improve. I’ve kept the promise I made you, but for the other issues, please don’t bring them up."

"Otherwise, I’ll tell dad that I want to study abroad in high school."

"You know his attitude towards you; he has always wanted me to go abroad."

If possible, Zhao Lei didn’t want to threaten Mrs. Zhao like this, especially not in front of Huang Man.

But he noticed Mother Zhao’s dissatisfied gaze towards Huang Man, certain that she blamed Huang Man for this.

"You, you..." Mrs. Zhao knew that Father Zhao had returned for a visit a few days ago.

What made her angry was that he came back when she wasn’t home, discussed something with Zhao Lei in the study, and left before she returned.

How could Mrs. Zhao not be furious? Her husband would rather sleep in his office’s rest area than come home.

Now it was even better. After work, he went straight to his lover’s place, or rather several lovers’ places; none of them dominated, but with him being away from home for so long, how could she have any dignity left?

What angered her even more was that, although it was an issue between husband and wife, Father Zhao had discussed it with Zhao Lei. What did that mean?

How could she have any dignity left in front of her child, "Your dad really is..."

"Mom, haven’t you ever thought of starting a business?" Zhao Lei felt Mother Zhao should have her own enterprise.

Otherwise, it was nothing but shopping and having tea with her group of equally disgruntled friends, complaining about men and nothing else.

Have her own business? Mrs. Zhao initially wanted to pull Zhao Lei aside to talk to him seriously about love and respect.

But to her surprise, Zhao Lei had asked her such a question. Start a business? Mother Zhao was at a loss; she hadn’t worked since graduating because she married Father Zhao due to various reasons.

And then she quickly had Zhao Lei, so it could be said she had never worked a job.

Now, at her age, he was asking her if she wanted a career of her own.

What was this supposed to mean? Mrs. Zhao looked at Zhao Lei with displeasure, "Just because I don’t work, you look down on me?"

"It’s not about looking down on you. Why would you think that?"

"I just think if you start a business, you could ask dad for money."

"Haven’t you always said dad resents you for spending too much? If you propose to start a business, dad won’t oppose it."

"After your business succeeds, how you spend money will be up to you. Could dad still criticize you then?"

"And when you’re out there, if anyone mocks you for not having a man’s favor, you can strike back with your own business."

Zhao Lei knew that the reason his father hadn’t divorced was for his sake, but if he turned out to be a failure, or one of his half-brothers showed promise, he would be abandoned.

Zhao Lei didn’t mind if he became that discarded child; life just went on. But he knew Mother Zhao probably couldn’t face such an outcome.

So, it would be better for Mother Zhao to have her own business, to not have to dwell on such thoughts all day and to have something of her own.

Once she had her own business, she wouldn’t focus so much on trivialities, thinking it would be better to start a venture than spend all her time idling.

"Your dad, your dad..." Mrs. Zhao saw Zhao Lei’s serious expression, and her heart suddenly grew cold.

A man who could so frankly discuss these matters with his son had indeed given up on their relationship completely.
