Chapter 196: Chapter 196: Brother-in-law is the Ex 96_1
Huang Jing left home after a meal, retreating with the ready excuse that she had to visit the rest of the relatives.
Huang Lixin thought of something, "Your Spring Festival?"
"I’m going on a holiday," Huang Jing knew saying this would upset Mr. and Mrs. Huang Lixin, but it couldn’t be helped.
The four people present frowned upon hearing Huang Jing mention going out for fun.
Now, the New Year for them wasn’t about buying whatever they wanted, indulging in endless shopping, but rather about budgeting and careful spending.
And yet, Huang Jing was actually going out for fun, what was this supposed to mean?
Huang Lei had even more on her mind; back when she was single, she too used to go out and have fun all the time, wherever was enjoyable, not caring about the cost at all.
But now, going out meant considering money and time; taking too many days off would send the boss into a rage.
Taking a long holiday meant everyone wanted to go out, which meant spending more money, and she did not have that much on hand.
This Spring Festival, she had to follow Ho Zhen back to the Ho Family to celebrate, and the thought made her restless, she didn’t even dare to think about how the relatives would mock her.
Not to mention, the relatives from the Huang and Zhang families mocked her, and just thinking about it made Huang Lei furious, leading her to rant wildly in the group chat.
In the past, it wasn’t a big deal, everyone would have coaxed her, but now, they simply kicked her out.
Could Huang Lei be happy about this? Of course not, she was discontent in every way, complaining to relatives, but the messages she sent were met with silence, no replies whatsoever.
Huang Lei understood the relatives wouldn’t bother with her; they used to indulge her because of Huang Lixin, but now that Huang Lixin was retired, he couldn’t help her with anything, so why would they show her any regard?
Huang Lei was deeply resentful, but could only keep quiet, not daring to complain further, though what she really thought, only she knew.
In her heart, she bitterly swore and cursed all the relatives, Huang Lixin included, thinking that if he had not stepped back, would she be like this?
If only Huang Lixin had addressed her job situation in the past, even getting her a contract position would have been better than her current job.
She used to think the white-collar workers in big cities were really impressive, but now she understood, it was the high-paying jobs that were, and without resources or ability, how could she possibly get one?
The previous job might have looked monotonous and boring, but stability in work and benefits, and not having too much to do, made it an ideal place for retirement. Yet she easily left it and now, wanting to go back, her position was gone.
The more Huang Lei thought about it, the more agitated she became, unable to complain to Huang Lixin, so she began complaining to Zhang Xiaoya instead.
The latter knew why Huang Lixin had acted this way and originally thought that after bumping into the walls many times outside, the girl would have grown up a bit, but it turned out she was still the same self-centered Huang Lei.
Zhang Xiaoya said with displeasure, "Your dad could have made such a request, but do you think your work attitude would be up to it?"
"And when you quit your job, the triumphant speech you made, where you harshly criticized your boss and colleagues. Have you thought about the consequences?"
Zhang Xiaoya felt angry just thinking about it; with such a mindset, Huang Lei’s ability to stay in that kind of unit for so many years was truly a testament to Huang Lixin’s influence.
"The scene you caused that day felt refreshing, but do you know how much effort your dad put into resolving the problem?"
He even promised a lot of benefits; "Now that your dad is in this state, you should be familiar with the saying ’out of sight, out of mind.’ They won’t show any respect for your dad."
"If you make a mistake at work, who do you think can help you?" Zhang Xiaoya grew more tired the more she thought about it.
If it were Huang Jing, there would be no need to explain so much.
"Just do your current job well," Zhang Xiaoya’s expectations weren’t high, she just wished Huang Lei would work properly.
"Whether the salary is high or low, at least it’s a job, do it well." Zhang Xiaoya had thought that Huang Lei might have changed, that she had improved a lot from before.
But she was still the same, all kinds of selfishness, only seeing herself, so if that’s the case, the money still had to be hidden away.
"Also, when you go to the Ho Family, after all, it was you who was capricious; you should behave properly," Zhang Xiaoya lectured at length on how to conduct oneself after arriving at the in-laws’ house.
Huang Lei hurried home before the holidays, not for anything else, but for money, and she didn’t expect Zhang Xiaoya to ramble on and on without wanting to give any money.
This truly angered Huang Lei, "According to me, no amount of cajoling or performance can match the effect of a generous gift."
Zhang Xiaoya looked at Huang Lei, who was exuding a sense of entitlement, and really felt a surge of frustration.
It was blatantly obvious she was hoping for cash, but why should she have to give her money?
Zhang Xiaoya’s tone grew harsh, "If you think that’s the easy way, then go ahead and do it that way."
"My expectations of you are not high now; just come back and visit us when you have the time."
"Don’t expect me to give you money, and I don’t expect you to be more filial in any way."
Zhang Xiaoya glanced at the gifts that Huang Jing had brought; they were truly practical, all things they could eat and drink.
In contrast, the things Huang Lei brought looked nice in their packaging, but everyone knew they were just for show.
Zhang Xiaoya remembered how Ho Zhen used to receive gifts from clients, which he would directly hand over to her, presuming they were from someone else.
With this in mind, Zhang Xiaoya pushed the gifts into Huang Lei’s hands, "Neither your dad nor I eat the things you brought."
"You take them back and give them to Ho Zhen’s parents." Zhang Xiaoya also proceeded to dig out the tonics that Huang Lei had brought on her last two visits, preparing to return them to her.
But she got angrier when she discovered upon inspection that the contents had expired.
Although she couldn’t be certain if they had already expired upon delivery, it was clear that even if they hadn’t, there weren’t many days left before expiration.
Even though the current state of the Huang family was much less prosperous than before, it still didn’t justify Huang Lei stepping on them.
"Take your things and leave," Zhang Xiaoya couldn’t help but speak out.
She had selected these gifts herself in the beginning and was well aware of their issues.
However, after not noticing the first time and the few times after, her gall certainly grew.
Thinking that Zhang Xiaoya was not in the habit of checking expiration dates, she didn’t expect to have a mishap.
And to think it happened at a time when she needed her family’s strong support, how could Huang Lei not be angry?
Of course, she was very angry, which resulted in Zhang Xiaoya directly calling Ho Zhen over to ask if he knew about this.
She gave Ho Zhen a thorough reprimand, saying he was just a man who didn’t know to work hard and relied on women all the time.
This infuriated Ho Zhen to no end, and he stormed off on the spot, with Huang Lei having no choice but to follow.
Huang Jing had no idea, busy with relatives and arranging gifts for the New Year, that Huang Lei could commit such a foolish act.
Huang Jing was stunned by Huang Lei’s actions; by her demeanor, she must have hoped to gain some advantage to take back.
It should have been a case of spending a little to earn a lot, yet she wasn’t even willing to part with a little money.
