Chapter 368: Chapter 214: Jokes_2
Lady Tang wouldn’t cause much of a stir, but Yixiu was afraid that the old master would get involved and upset Master Sangui. Anxiously, she asked, "How is Grandpa? Has anything happened to him?"
Xie Huzi said, "Yixiu can rest assured, Third Uncle Qian is fine. It’s just that he was somewhat unwell a few days ago, but after Doctor Zhang from the County Baohe Hall made a visit, he’s alright now. Grandpa Qian and Grandma Qian even wanted to move to your house, saying that from now on they would live with your branch of the family. The day before yesterday, as they started moving out of the main house with their belongings, your grandpa took a fall and twisted his leg. The doctor from Baohe Hall says he must stay in bed for at least three months. For some reason, now your grandparents are unwilling to move in with your branch."
After hearing this, Yixiu hurriedly ordered to hasten the horse and rushed to Guiyuan.
Barely had the carriage left the west end of the village and entered the narrow road, when Monkey Brother and Benben jumped off and bolted towards Guiyuan. Upon reaching the main entrance of the front courtyard, Lady Wu and Yijin both rushed out to meet her. They were glad to see Yixiu, but the sight of Lady Wu looking weary and worn took a toll on Yixiu’s spirits as well.
After instructing the servants to move the things into the yard and having paid the carriage driver, Yixiu and the others had just entered the front courtyard when they saw Cheng Yue emerge from the Moon Gate.
Her complexion was pale, her small face had become thin and sharp, and her eyes were bloodshot. The outfit that once fit her well now hung loose and oversized on her frame.
Yixiu’s heart ached miserably, and she went up to her saying, "Mother, it’s been but two months since I left, why have you become so thin?"
Cheng Yue, hugging Yixiu, wept and said, "Yixiu, Yixiu, your mother has missed you so much. Why have you only come back now, when there’s been a huge mess at home... What are we going to do, mother has caused trouble, mother has caused trouble... Jinwa is Mother’s and Brother Jiang’s biological son, your own blood brother, but they are spouting nonsense, saying that Jinwa is not Mother’s biological son..."
Upon hearing this, Yijin’s eyes turned red, and she held onto Cheng Yue, saying, "Mother, don’t be distressed. They are talking nonsense just because they covet our family’s property. The child is indeed Mother’s biological son, my own blood brother."
With that, the mother and daughters entered the main room, where Qian Sangui was reclining on an arhat bed and covered with a thin blanket. His face was waxen and his eyes deeply sunken, the flesh he had managed to put on vanished once again.
Yixiu, entering the room, took his hand and said sorrowfully, "Grandfather, no matter what happens, you must not fall. You are the backbone of our family."
Qian Sangui forced a smile, saying weakly, "Yes, Grandfather won’t die so easily. I won’t let them have their way."
A maid brought in a washbasin, and after Yixiu had washed up, she began eating while listening to the others recount the sequence of events, mainly told by Yijin and Lady Wu.
At the end of last month, the pregnant Qian Mandie returned from town to visit her parents’ home. After lunch, she brought gifts to visit the third branch. Coincidentally, Qian Manxia was also visiting her maternal home. The two expectant mothers exchanged childbirth experiences, talking about the pains of labor and how it felt like doing a round at Yama’s door.
Cheng Yue happened to be there and said, "I felt some pain giving birth to Yixiu, but I didn’t feel a thing when Jinwa was born; I slept through it..."
Slow to react, Cheng Yue continued speaking to herself while Lady Wu and Qian Manxia failed to stop her.
Qian Mandie laughed, "Sister-in-law must be joking. How could you give birth while asleep?"
Lady Wu quickly stood up, took Cheng Yue by the arm, and said, "Mother, I recall there’s a sewing task only you can do. Come with me outside quickly."
Cheng Yue, still speaking to Qian Mandie, insisted, "Yueyue is not lying, it’s true, mother said so..."
Before she could finish, Lady Wu pulled her away.
Now a daughter-in-law and a soon-to-be mother, Qian Manxia had slowly become aware of certain matters and had her suspicions about Yijin’s circumstances. Though shocked, she remembered the instructions of Lady Wu and Wan Dazhong to keep this secret deep within her heart, daring not to reveal a single word.
Seeing that Cheng Yue had been led away by Lady Wu, she smiled at Qian Mandie, "My sister-in-law sometimes gets muddled; she can make fiction sound like fact. When she gave birth to Jinwa, I was outside the room. I heard my mother deliver Jinwa first, then Yixiu." She also advised Qian Mandie to keep this to herself, lest others laugh at her sister-in-law for being foolish.
Qian Mandie didn’t think much of it, attributing it to the possibility of Cheng Yue’s mind being unclear, making her prone to errors in speech and action.
After returning home, she told the story to Lady Wang as a joke, emphasizing not to tell others. The speaker didn’t mean it, but the listener took it to heart, and Lady Wang started to ponder. Thinking it over, Jinwa indeed didn’t look anything like the Qian family. It was said that Cheng Yue had an unusually small belly during her pregnancy; how could such a small belly possibly be carrying twins?
