Han YunXi was momentarily stunned. The thing HuMing shoved into her hands caught her completely off guard. When she looked down at the oiled paper in her hands, she finally realized—HuMing had brought her a chicken leg!

She looked up at him in confusion.

"HuMing, why do you still have a chicken leg on you? Smuggled stash?"

"It’s a stash I saved just for you. Brought it out so you could have it."

The chicken leg was still warm in her hand, and something stirred deeply in Han YunXi’s heart.

She pressed her lips together, unwilling to let her emotions show.

She hadn’t expected HuMing to still be thinking of her. Judging by the warmth, he must have just reheated it not long ago.

Han YunXi sat down on a stone bench nearby, and HuMing took the seat beside her.

"HuMing, when did you learn how to butcher chickens? You never used to do this kind of stuff at home."

"You have to learn eventually. If I didn’t know anything, I wouldn’t be sitting here chatting with you right now."

It was said lightly, but Han YunXi could feel the weight behind his words.

She tore off a chunk of meat from the drumstick and held it out to HuMing, wanting him to eat.

But HuMing shook his head, intending to refuse. He had just opened his mouth to speak when, in the next moment, Han YunXi’s hand moved in and stuffed the meat into his mouth.

She didn’t care whether he wanted to eat or not—she simply made him eat it.

Satisfied after accomplishing this "mission," Han YunXi finally began eating her own drumstick.

The moon hanging above them was full and round, and for some reason, HuMing felt at peace.

Here, away from the city, he could forget its troubles and quietly enjoy the serenity.

The sky over the city was nothing but a pane of black glass, while the countryside sky was speckled with countless stars.

"HuMing, I don’t really see you as my older brother anymore."

Han YunXi suddenly spoke, catching HuMing completely off guard.

He didn’t understand why she would say such a thing. Was she trying to draw a line between them? Then again, it wouldn’t be surprising—after all, when he was dealing with Han ShuYi, he had used her. She probably couldn’t accept that.

"I get it. It makes sense you were angry that day at dinner."

"What are you talking about, HuMing?" Han YunXi frowned. From the moment he spoke, she knew he had misunderstood something. "What does that have to do with me being mad?"

"Weren’t you angry because I used you to deal with Han ShuYi? I thought… I thought that’s what you’d been holding on to."

HuMing scratched his head awkwardly.

His emotional range had grown noticeably broader lately—he was practically a normal person now.

Han YunXi took a deep breath. She hadn’t expected HuMing to be stuck on that matter for so long.

She set the chicken leg aside and looked at him seriously.

"I wasn’t mad that you used me. I was mad that you didn’t care about your own safety. I didn’t know you’d gone through all that after joining the Gu family. You could’ve said no to them."

To her, HuMing’s safety should’ve been the priority.

No matter how capable he was, he was still just one person. Living alone on an island for a week—based on the HuMing she used to know, how could he have possibly survived?

But today, she’d seen a different side of HuMing.

And gradually, she began to understand why he agreed to the Gu family's request.

She straightened her back, eyes blinking slowly.

A storm of emotion was brewing inside her, but she didn’t feel it was the right time to speak those thoughts aloud.

There were some questions that even she didn’t know the answers to. What if she was wrong?

Han YunXi didn’t want to make a rash decision. She picked up the chicken leg again and resumed eating.

HuMing propped his hands against the bench, smiling as he watched her.

In a pitch-black room, Han ShuYi lay on his bed, propping his head up with one hand. He wasn’t asleep, unlike usual.

Ever since HuMing came to see him, he hadn’t had a single restful night.

Not because he was torn up about anything—but because he was waiting. Waiting for Gu ZhaoChuan’s next move.

Both HuMing and Gu ZhaoChuan seemed to be underestimating him. They both wanted to use him, to make him do their dirty work.

Han ShuYi admitted—he’d been too impatient back then.

If he’d been more composed… so what if he’d played nice with HuMing for a while?

But what was done was done. He had no intention of lingering on it.

Since HuMing had said Gu ZhaoChuan wanted to use him, then someone would definitely approach him.

So where were they?

From the bed beside him came the rustling sound of someone shifting.

Han ShuYi remembered—his former cellmate had been transferred to a higher-security ward for causing trouble.

What he didn’t understand was why that guy had gone out of his way to stir things up.

Back in the cafeteria, the guy had merely bumped shoulders with someone—and that was all it took for him to start a fight.

Now, in his room was a new cellmate. Thin, small, frail-looking—like he’d fall over with a stiff breeze.

At first glance, Han ShuYi had thought he could knock him out with a single punch.

"New cellmate…"

Han ShuYi muttered under his breath. Suddenly, something occurred to him, and he instinctively turned his head to look.

What he saw gave him a jolt.

The man was grinning, showing yellowed teeth, his face twisted into a creepy smile.

Han ShuYi’s brows furrowed. He clenched his fists, as if he might strike at any moment.

"You seem pretty tense, kid."

"It’s the middle of the night and you’re creeping around my bed. You think I’m not gonna be tense?"

"Staying alert is a good trait. Go back to sleep." The frail man returned to his bed, lying down again.

But just as he settled in, Han ShuYi called out.

"You’re Gu ZhaoChuan’s, aren’t you? No need for all the dancing around. HuMing already told me everything."

With a single sentence, Han ShuYi threw HuMing under the bus.

The moment the thin man heard that name, he turned his head sharply, his hawk-like eyes locked onto Han ShuYi. But Han ShuYi stared right back, unafraid.

Silence fell over the room like a dropped curtain.

It was as if Han ShuYi had walked straight into a carefully laid chessboard, only to flip it over with a single slap—leaving no time for anyone to react.

"You came to me because you want me to deal with HuMing, right? That’s what both of you want. So now it’s just a matter of who’s offering the better deal."

Leaning back against the wall, Han ShuYi let a faint smirk curl at the corner of his lips.
