Chapter 45: Ch 45: Eternal Gamble
Ye Tian had no choices left.
Every fiber of his being screamed in agony as he lay amidst the rubble of the battlefield, his body broken, his mind barely holding on.
Blood poured from his wounds, staining the shattered earth around him.
His left arm was numb, and his right leg felt like it had been crushed beyond repair.
Yet, through all of it, his sharp, unwavering eyes remained locked on the towering beast before him.
The Death Dragon.
Its massive claws were raised above him, poised to deliver the final blow.
The beast’s cerulean eyes, flecked with black, glowed with an ancient malice that froze the air.
Its scales shimmered in the dim light, each one thick and impenetrable, a testament to its years of dominance.
The boy beneath it, a mere human in appearance, should not have stood a chance against a creature of such immense power.
To the dragon, Ye Tian was no more than an insect to be crushed... a fleeting annoyance.
"You are no match for me..." the Death Dragon growled, its deep, guttural voice carrying an overwhelming authority.
"A pitiful child, devoid of strength, if you wanna blame someone for this state of yours, blame michael."
Ye Tian couldn’t muster a response.
His lips were cracked, his throat dry, but his mind raced as he weighed his dwindling options.
If he wanted to survive, he would have to rely on something he had sworn never to use.
The thought made him sick, but what other choice did he have?
The dragon tilted its colossal head, scanning Ye Tian’s battered body.
The absence of mana around the boy puzzled it.
There wasn’t even a trace of energy emanating from him... nothing to indicate he posed any sort of threat.
A low chuckle escaped the dragon’s throat.
"How pathetic. I expected more from one who dares carry the bloodline of Eviar."
It raised its claw, a single talon large enough to slice a mountain in two.
Slowly, deliberately, it brought it down, ready to end this meaningless encounter.
But just as the claw was about to strike, it stopped.
An inch above Ye Tian’s face, the massive claw froze mid-air.
The Death Dragon’s eyes narrowed as a spark of confusion crossed its mind.
For a moment, it thought it might have hesitated, but that wasn’t it.
Something was stopping it.
A faint light, so dim it was almost imperceptible, flickered beneath its claw.
It was like a small ember refusing to be extinguished in a storm.
"What... is this?" the dragon muttered, retracting its claw instinctively.
It stepped back, its massive body trembling slightly as an unfamiliar sensation washed over it.
The Death Dragon’s gaze fixated on the boy.
That’s when it noticed something.
Ye Tian’s lips were moving. Barely, but they were moving.
The dragon leaned in, its ears twitching as it tried to make sense of what it was hearing.
"...This foolish sheep of yours apologizes to its eternal god... for not believing..."
The words were faint, muttered like a mantra, but they carried an unsettling weight.
The dragon’s pupils dilated. It snarled, the ground beneath its feet cracking under the force of its agitation.
"What are you muttering, human?! Answer me!"
But Ye Tian continued, his voice gaining strength even as his body remained limp.
"Now that a dire situation has fallen upon me... I have nothing but regret... Eternal God... forgive my sins and guide me toward the light..."
The dragon’s breath hitched.
These weren’t spells, nor were they incantations.
This was something it had never encountered in all its millennia. A primal unease clawed at its chest.
No. It couldn’t allow this to continue.
With a deafening roar, the Death Dragon spread its massive wings, the sheer force of the motion flattening the surrounding forest.
"ENOUGH!" it bellowed.
Magic circles appeared in the sky, vast and intricate, their glow bathing the battlefield in a blinding light.
Each circle represented a rank-8 spell, the most devastating magic a dragon could muster without breaking its natural limits.
The spells compressed into concentrated beams, their destructive power amplified beyond reason.
One by one, they descended upon Ye Tian like a rain of death.
The ground quaked violently, fissures splitting open as the spells obliterated everything in a 20-kilometer radius.
Yet, as the smoke and dust cleared, the dragon froze in disbelief.
Ye Tian remained untouched.
He was still lying on the ground, his body broken, his hands clasped together as if in prayer.
A faint, golden glow surrounded him, undisturbed by the destruction that had leveled the surrounding landscape.
"Please have mercy upon your child..." Ye Tian muttered, his voice steady and resolute.
"Forgive my sins, and let me walk the path of light... Let me become a beacon in this darkness..."
The Death Dragon snarled, its claws digging into the ground. Fear... a sensation it hadn’t felt in centuries... gripped its chest.
"No... I won’t let you!"
It launched itself into the air, its wings blotting out the sky.
Mana surged through its ancient veins as it began to channel its ultimate attack.
"Heaven’s Calamity..."
This was rank-9 magic, a forbidden spell that even dragons used only as a last resort.
The sheer power of the spell was enough to reshape the very landscape, but the cost was immense.
Even for a dragon, it meant exhausting every ounce of mana stored within its heart.
A bead of light formed in the dragon’s maw, growing brighter and denser with each passing second.
The energy it contained was enough to erase everything within a 100-kilometer radius.
The dragon’s eyes burned with desperation as it unleashed the spell.
A massive beam of light shot forth, tearing through the heavens as it descended upon Ye Tian.
The ground shook violently, and the sky seemed to split apart as the spell reached its target.
The Death Dragon watched, its chest heaving from the strain of the attack.
It had poured everything into that strike.
Nothing could have survived it.
Nothing.
But then, it felt it.
"In the name of... Eternal Lord... Let there be... Glory..."
A suffocating pressure descended upon the battlefield, far greater than anything the dragon had ever encountered.
Its massive body was thrown to the ground, pinned as though an invisible hand were crushing it.
"What... what is this?!" the dragon roared, its voice trembling with panic.
It tried to lift its head, to see if the boy was still there.
But when it turned its gaze toward where Ye Tian had been, it saw nothing.
The boy was gone.
Only silence remained.
