Chapter 97: Chapter 96 Detection-Type Superpower_1

May 15th, Monday.

6:00 AM.

The alarm clock on the nightstand rang punctually, pulling Aozawa from his pleasant dreams back to reality. He did not open his eyes immediately.

Refreshing his superpower was far more thrilling than opening a blind box. Even after several times, he still wasn’t used to it, nor could he remain nonchalant when facing a new one.

Aozawa silently prayed for a while, then slowly opened his eyes.

Superpower: Catalyst Sensing.

Looking at the words floating in the air, Aozawa blinked, and the text gradually dissolved.

He threw back the covers, a trace of contemplation in his eyes. Catalyst Induction, huh? Sounds like it has nothing to do with attack power, he mused.

With the intention of trying it out, Aozawa squatted down, placed his right hand on the ceramic tile, and used Catalyst Induction.

In an instant, he felt his perspective soar dramatically, as if breaking through the confines of his apartment. Countless images flooded his mind, like someone suddenly confronted with a room full of surveillance monitors. Yet, he didn’t feel dizzy; instead, a natural sense of comfort washed over him. He could see all the images and hear all the sounds clearly, needing only a thought to focus on a particular scene and make it sharper. For instance, he focused on the floor below. It was as if invisible eyes and ears had materialized on the tiles downstairs, zeroing in on the two people locked in a passionate struggle on the sofa.

He could discern the expression on the woman’s face—it seemed to say, ’This is incredible!’ He could also see a bead of sweat trickle from her glistening neck down to a mole on her chest.

The sounds the man and woman made were distinct, yet they didn’t stir his emotions. In that moment, he was devoid of desire, like a deity observing humanity from the shadows.

Aozawa stopped using his catalyst sensing ability, and the myriad scenes vanished. His vision returned to normal.

Aozawa got up, a look of sudden understanding on his face. He now knew what his catalyst sensing ability entailed.

It meant that whatever he touched, he could sense the surroundings of that object. To put it more bluntly, if his hand touched an Apple phone’s camera, then every Apple phone camera in Tokyo would become his eyes and ears. Through those cameras, he could peer into other people’s lives.

This superpower was more convenient for spying on others than an X-ray ability. It was also incredibly useful for finding people. With this power, he could easily locate anyone he wished.

Whom should I try it on?

Aozawa pondered for a moment and decided to find Yasuda Masao. As long as Yasuda was in Tokyo, he couldn’t escape the tracking of Aozawa’s catalyst sensing. To celebrate his new superpower, Aozawa resolved to visit the councilman and have a "heart-to-heart" talk.

Having made his decision, Aozawa stripped off his pajamas and changed into his Brilliant High School uniform.

He twisted the doorknob and called out habitually, "Good morning, Chiyoda."

"Mhm."

A charming nasal hum escaped Morimoto Chiyoda’s lips.

Today, as always, she was practicing yoga, her supple body displaying graceful curves. I’m so tempted to poke a few holes in her yoga outfit, Aozawa thought.

「After breakfast.」

As usual, Aozawa ran to school.

Although the superpower that refreshed weekly was potent, it hadn’t directly enhanced his physical fitness. To maintain the powerful arm strength that allowed him to perform backflips with ease and swing effortlessly on the high bar—all without relying on superpowers—he dedicated time to physical training every day. It was tiring, but a strong body fostered confidence and a resolute will.

After finishing the morning’s Sword Dao practice, Aozawa, as usual, was the last member to leave. He opened the door of the Sword Dao club.

Outside in the corridor, a girl leaned against the wall. Her long hair, transitioning from blonde to a dazzling array of colors, looked incredibly vibrant. Her cheeks, the color of freshly baked bread, bloomed with a radiant smile.

"Good morning, Aozawa. Here’s your vegetable juice for today."

Ayatsuki Ayaka said with a smile, handing him a thermos. Her wheat-colored fingers were adorned with colorful nail art.

She loved frequently changing her nail designs; Aozawa recalled her using at least twenty different colors.

"Thank you. I’m actually quite thirsty."

Aozawa took the thermos, deliberately letting his palm cover Ayatsuki Ayaka’s fingers.

The brief contact made her heart pound. Reluctantly, she withdrew her hand and clenched it behind her back.

Thrilling! Ayatsuki Ayaka exclaimed internally. This is different from when we held hands at the park. These brief, unexpected morning contacts with Aozawa always make my heart flutter. It feels like my blood is racing!

The corners of her mouth lifted into a smile.

Aozawa unscrewed the thermos lid, took a large gulp of vegetable juice, and headed towards the entrance of the club building.

Ayatsuki Ayaka, hands clasped behind her back, cheerfully walked up beside him, recounting her weekend.

She omitted the part about filming short videos. She only mentioned her shopping trip with Saeko and the others, where they got hit on by some guys. She also complained about Maru ditching them for a man they met, who Maru then went to karaoke with.

Aozawa listened patiently.

The mundane words spilling from Ayatsuki Ayaka’s pale pink lips held a fairytale-like charm, making him want to keep listening. His attention was occasionally captivated by her dimples. Ayatsuki Ayaka’s smile possessed a magical power to affect others.

「The first class of the morning ended.」

DING-DONG. The bell signaled the end of class. Hojo Tetsuji, who hadn’t continued sleeping with his head on the desk, shot up from his seat.

Seeing this, Phoenix Academy Maggie looked surprised. "Tetsuji, you actually woke up on your own?"

Hojo Tetsuji adjusted his sunglasses, his expression grave. "Miss, I have something important to discuss with you. Let’s go to the rooftop."

Phoenix Academy Maggie blinked, unsure whether to agree.

Aozawa patted her shoulder. "Don’t just stand there. Hurry up to the rooftop."

"I thought the rooftop was supposed to be locked," Phoenix Academy Maggie said, a little uncertain.

Logically, schools lock rooftop doors to prevent students from entering without permission and to avoid accidents. Could it be that Japanese schools always keep their rooftops open to students? Phoenix Academy Maggie wasn’t sure about this. Urged on by the two boys, she made her way to the top floor of the school.

As she had suspected, the rooftop door was locked.

"See? I told you it was locked," Phoenix Academy Maggie said.

BAM! Hojo Tetsuji violently punched the rooftop door open and strode onto the rooftop.

"Is this really okay?" Phoenix Academy Maggie turned her head, unable to comprehend such vandalism of school property.

Aozawa grabbed her shoulders. "I didn’t see a thing. Don’t worry about it. Just go on out."

"What on earth are you two up to?" Phoenix Academy Maggie grumbled, but she didn’t pull her shoulders from Aozawa’s grasp, letting him push her toward the rooftop.

Hojo Tetsuji, who was ahead of them, took a deep breath. He turned around, knelt resolutely with his hands on the ground, and bowed his head. "Miss, there’s something important I need to ask of you! I sincerely hope you’ll agree!"
