Chapter 310: Chapter 310 What happened last night?
Liu Wensheng peered out through a crack in the dilapidated door and saw the girl who had just passed them at the corner, holding a colored glaze lantern.
His brow furrowed slightly, not understanding why she would come to this secluded and desolate courtyard with a lantern so late at night.
As he was pondering, he saw the girl approach the well and set down the colored glaze lantern.
Then, she squatted by the well and peered inside, as if she were searching for something.
Liu Wensheng’s gaze was fixed unwaveringly on her strange actions when suddenly, she raised her head in fright, appearing somewhat scared as she fell back onto the ground.
Feng Yue was also watching this suspicious-looking woman but at the same time, he was pondering another matter.
The woman, as if having a guilty conscience, looked around, and just when a gust of wind blew by, she shivered unconsciously.
The old wooden door made a "creaking" noise as the wind shook it.
The sudden noise startled everyone both inside and outside the door.
The woman’s eyes widened in terror as she looked towards the door that kept swinging and squealing sharply, and in a low voice, she called out, "Who! Who is hiding there!"
Saying this, she frantically scrambled to her feet, snatched up the colored glaze lantern at her feet and instinctively wanted to run.
But just as she was about to turn around, she mustered up her courage, took the lantern, and shivering, walked step by step towards the dilapidated loft.
Feng Yue was exceedingly anxious, worrying that if they were detected, wouldn’t their efforts tonight have been for naught?
Liu Wensheng, however, did not show any panic about being discovered; instead, he curved his lips into a smirk.
As the woman’s hand was just about to touch the door, he not only didn’t hide but stood still, waiting for her to enter.
Unfortunately, the woman’s hands were shaking so violently that she no longer had the courage to push open the door.
Eventually, she withdrew her hand, took the lantern, and ran off in a fluster.
Behind the door, Liu Wensheng clicked his tongue in an obscure way.
Feng Yue breathed a sigh of relief but was still afraid the person might come back, so he softly said to Liu Wensheng, "What if she comes back?"
Liu Wensheng let out a snort of derision, his tone full of conviction, "She won’t dare."
With that, he pushed open the door and walked straight to the well.
Though Feng Yue had many questions, now was not the time to ask them; he could only suppress the doubts and unease in his heart and silently followed.
At the well’s edge, Liu Wensheng, imitating the woman’s position from before, squatted down and peered into the well.
They only saw a pitch-black mass, and if not for the moonlight revealing the stones at the bottom, they wouldn’t have been able to see anything at all.
Naturally, they also wouldn’t know that beneath the stones lay several hastily buried corpses.
Fearing that he might fall in, Feng Yue knelt beside him with a nervous expression and instinctively encircled Liu Wensheng’s waist with one arm.
Liu Wensheng didn’t notice his action; suddenly, he extended his palm and used his Inner Strength to strike the stones at the bottom of the well.
Without any sound or sign, the stones were ground into dust and then scattered by a gust of wind, revealing an arm buried underneath.
Feng Yue also looked down and frowned, "Why would there be a dead person buried under this well?"
Even if this courtyard was abandoned and in disrepair, the Grandmaster Residence would not bury a dead person here of all places.
Liu Wensheng covered his nose and spoke in a low tone, "Perhaps, unable to find a better place to dispose of a body they accidentally killed, they just dumped it here."
Feng Yue felt his reasoning was sound and nodded. He then thought of that woman’s peculiar behavior earlier and a disturbing thought suddenly crossed his mind.
"Could the person just now be the murderer?"
Liu Wensheng shook his head with a grave expression, pointing to the arm that was showing at the bottom of the well, "The owner of this arm is a man; even if we don’t mention how skilled in martial arts he might have been, it is highly unlikely that he would be accidentally killed by a delicate woman."
Upon hearing this, Feng Yue looked closely several more times, and indeed, the arm that was exposed seemed to belong to a man.
"If it wasn’t that woman who did it, how would she know there was something at the bottom of the well?" Feng Yue furrowed his brows tightly, feeling an uncomfortable sense of strangeness exuding from the Grandmaster Residence inside and out.
Liu Wensheng didn’t answer his question. Looking up at the sky, he said, "Let’s head back first."
Feng Yue nodded. Then, he saw Liu Wensheng scoop up some dirt from the side and fill it back down into the hole, covering up the protruding arm completely, causing the corners of his mouth to twitch.
If one didn’t know the truth, upon seeing this scene, they might think the gruesome incident was the work of the two of them.
"Aren’t we going to take out the body below?" asked Feng Yue.
Liu Wensheng glanced at him and said indifferently, "Even if we get it out, how are we going to take it to the Prince Residence?"
"That’s true," Feng Yue had nothing to say.
The two made another round through the Grandmaster Residence and, before dawn, left the place with swift leaps.
By the time they returned to the Prince Residence, the sky had already begun to lighten.
Feng Yue hurriedly urged Liu Wensheng to go back to his room to rest, "You haven’t fully recovered from your illness, and you’ve been up all night; your lips are all pale."
Liu Wensheng just felt a bit tired, but not as severe as he described.
However, at this point, it was indeed time to rest.
Feng Yue watched over him until he fell asleep before returning to his own room.
A few hours later, when he awoke from his sleep in shock, it was already noon.
He washed his face hastily, forgoing all else, and rushed to the room next door.
Seeing Liu Wensheng weakly holding a bowl of medicine and eating it, his face somewhat sheepish, "I accidentally overslept."
Ordinarily, he took care of the simple task of serving medicine himself.
Liu Wensheng, who had eaten the bitter medicine and was feeling depressed, brightened up a bit when he heard this, glancing at him, "You don’t have to hover around me all day long."
Feng Yue pursed his lips and said nothing; his turned back as he left looked somewhat desolate.
A while later, when Qi Yu came, she found the two men not speaking, which she thought peculiar.
Though they didn’t talk much on regular days, the atmosphere hadn’t been this awkward before.
Could something have happened last night?
Qi Yu remembered they had gone to the Grandmaster Residence the previous night and had planned to come over first thing in the morning to inquire about it.
But then she thought, having stayed up so late, they surely needed to rest a bit, so she delayed her visit until now.
She touched her chin and said to the two, who were in a huff with each other, "Did you discover anything at the Grandmaster Residence last night?"
Her question broke the long-standing silence and awkwardness in the room. Liu Wensheng coughed lightly and recounted everything they had seen in the Grandmaster Residence the night before.
Toward the end, his coughing became uncontrollable again.
Feng Yue couldn’t stay seated any longer; he sat down next to Liu Wensheng, patting his back while helping him finish the rest of the story, "There’s a dry well in the courtyard with several bodies buried inside."
