Chapter 309: Chapter 309: Guess, how many bodies are buried in this well?
Just as Qi Yu drifted deeper into sleep, on the other side, Liu Wensheng and Feng Yue had already infiltrated the Grandmaster Residence located in the north of the city.
Liu Wensheng deftly scaled the high walls of the Grandmaster Residence, avoided the patrolling guards, and moved effortlessly in the darkness.
Feng Yue, trailing behind him, was extremely alert, his eyes constantly scanning the surroundings.
Coming from a reputable background, he had never done something like scaling walls to enter someone’s courtyard in the dead of night.
As the two walked to a corner, Liu Wensheng suddenly turned around and silently mouthed two words to him.
Someone’s coming.
Feng Yue’s expression chilled, and listening carefully, he indeed heard faint footsteps approaching them.
But at that moment, retreating was not an option.
The footsteps drew nearer, and Feng Yue’s heartbeat quickened, his breathing halted.
Just as the footsteps were about to round the corner, Feng Yue felt himself being pushed, and then he swiftly ducked behind a rockery nearby.
Liu Wensheng still had his hands on his shoulders, side-glancing, focusing on the person who had just passed the corner.
His eyes slightly narrowed, adapting well to the darkness, he accurately fixed on the dark figure.
From the figure, it was a woman.
She was also carrying a glazed lamp, her expression serene as she continued forward.
Feng Yue was no longer able to focus on his surroundings; his entire back pressed against the hard rock of the rockery, the person in front of him still bracing his shoulders, almost as if they were embracing.
He breathed as quietly as possible, as if afraid of disturbing something.
The person in front of him was unaware of their proximity, her dark hair fanning out before his eyes. He lowered his gaze slightly and could only catch a glimpse of her sharp chin and half of her red lips through the dim moonlight.
It felt like a long time before the woman’s figure finally disappeared from sight.
Liu Wensheng withdrew his gaze, about to say something to Feng Yue, when he suddenly realized that he was almost pressing his body against him.
His breathing quickened for a moment, and he hurriedly let go of the hand he had on his shoulder, stepping back a little.
But the space between the two rockeries was limited; there was no room to retreat, and he could only maintain this distance, trying to keep his tone steady as he told Feng Yue, "Let’s get out of here first."
His voice was very soft, almost a whisper, so the faint warm breath sprayed onto Feng Yue’s cheek, rendering him speechless and leaving him completely dumbfounded.
Liu Wensheng, seeing no response, glanced up at him and noticed Feng Yue’s expression was somewhat stiff, prompting a puzzled frown.
However, he didn’t dwell on it, and taking Feng Yue by one arm, he left behind the rockery.
He wasn’t very familiar with the Grandmaster Residence, but having stayed here for over a decade and with the layout not having changed over the years, he knew there wouldn’t be a problem as long as he followed the directions from his memory.
At this hour, most of the people in the Grandmaster Residence had already retired, with only a few night-shift servants still standing outside their masters’ doors.
Liu Wensheng took a narrow path, and along the way, they saw no one.
Feng Yue seemed much quieter than on the way in, his footsteps light, his breathing barely audible, quietly following behind him.
"We’re here," Liu Wensheng suddenly said when they reached a dilapidated courtyard.
Feng Yue followed him into the rundown courtyard, looking around.
This place must have been uninhabited for many years as the bluestone slabs on the ground were already overgrown with moss, and the willow trees on both sides appeared very decrepit. The long willow branches hung limply, seemingly devoid of any life.
The courtyard was small, and compared to the exquisite small courtyards he had passed along the way, it appeared even narrower.
Inside was a two-story attic, half of the roof tiles had already fallen off, making it look uninhabitable, just an abandoned ruin.
Liu Wensheng, familiar with the path, skillfully avoided the moss on the bluestone slabs and pushed open the door of the attic, making a slight noise.
He stood outside the door and glanced indifferently before turning back to the yard.
Feng Yue followed him and asked softly, "What place is this?"
Liu Wensheng suddenly smiled and spoke nonchalantly, "The place I used to live."
His tone carried no desolation, but Feng Yue felt as though his heart had been pierced by a hole. It was somewhat painful, but more of a numb ache.
Seeing Feng Yue’s melancholic expression, Liu Wensheng hurriedly said, "Stop right there, I didn’t bring you here to reminisce about the past."
Feng Yue, puzzled, looked at him, "Then what are we doing here?"
Liu Wensheng pointed to an ancient well nearby and said with a half-smile, "Guess, how many bodies are buried in this well?"
Not waiting for Feng Yue to answer, he turned and walked to the edge of the well, his expression cold as he looked down.
This was an ancient well that had long been abandoned. There was no longer any water in it; the bottom had been perfunctorily covered with a few shovelfuls of dirt.
Feng Yue’s nostrils twitched, and he immediately furrowed his brows.
He seemed to smell a hint of decay.
"There’s someone down there," he said gravely, then realizing his words were not quite accurate, he corrected, "No, I should say, there is someone buried down there, and quite recently too."
Upon hearing this, Liu Wensheng glanced at him and asked casually, "How do you know?"
Without any reservation, Feng Yue responded, "I smelled the scent of a dead person."
Liu Wensheng’s eyes suddenly grew colder, yet his tone remained calm, as if merely curious, "What does a dead person smell like?"
Feng Yue honestly replied, "A rotten scent of decaying flesh, not very pleasant, and it comes with a strong stench of blood."
"Is that so?" Liu Wensheng turned around to face him squarely, his eyes not wavering as he spoke slowly and deliberately, "And how would you know what a dead body smells like, brother?"
Feng Yue suddenly realized he had slipped up. He pursed his lips and awkwardly looked away, "It’s nothing, I was just guessing."
Liu Wensheng snorted lightly, clearly not believing his fib. His tone turned somewhat cold, "We’ll settle this when we get back."
Feng Yue’s heart skipped a beat, and a wave of fear suddenly surged within him.
He hurriedly tried to explain, but Liu Wensheng cut him off, "Find a way to retrieve the body from the bottom of the well."
Feng Yue had no choice but to swallow his words, joining Liu Wensheng by the well to think of a solution.
The night deepened, and the air was so still that not even a whisper of wind could be heard.
In the silence, Liu Wensheng suddenly detected footsteps approaching this way.
The footsteps were hurried, and even Feng Yue heard them.
The two exchanged glances and quickly walked towards the dilapidated attic, disappearing into the darkness.
