Chapter 909: Really a Relative

Chapter 909: Chapter 909: Really a Relative

Helen drove Gu Fan to a seaside mansion that resembled a western castle in appearance, luxurious and majestic, only attainable to those with a net worth exceeding a hundred billion.

Gu Fan was amazed at first glance, his first thought being what it must feel like to live in such a place every day.

Seeing the look of longing on Gu Fan’s face, Helen joked, "Like this grand mansion? We could trade it for your old family house."

To that, Gu Fan shook his head, "Forget it, I don’t take advantage of others, and this place is too remote. There are no facilities around, no business, no vibrancy. Wouldn’t you be scared staying here alone at night?"

Hearing this, Helen smiled faintly, and then the mansion’s gate opened on its own and Helen drove through without any hindrance.

Gu Fan noticed many surveillance cameras and security personnel through the car window and realized that whoever lived here must hold a quite high status, probably a senior member of Organization X.

Helen stopped the car and signaled for Gu Fan to get out with her, then they saw Qiao Ya coming to greet them.

Helen asked, "Qiao Ya, where’s my grandfather?"

Qiao Ya pointed towards the beach, "The old master is waiting for you there by the beach. He said to come over as soon as Gu Fan arrives."

"Alright!" Helen then headed towards the beach, and Gu Fan hesitated for a moment before following her.

On the way, Helen seeing Gu Fan looking quite preoccupied, curiously asked, "What’s wrong? You seem very uncomfortable. Are you worried we might harm you?"

"No, it’s just that..." Gu Fan didn’t finish his sentence as they had already reached the private beach, where very few people were around, allowing one to quietly observe the seascape.

Gu Fan once again marveled at the benefits of being wealthy. However, when he saw an elderly figure sitting in a wheelchair by the sea, his brow furrowed and his body became slightly stiff.

The old man was staring intently at the azure sea, transfixed by the waves crashing against the shore, seemingly unaware of Gu Fan and Helen’s arrival.

Helen approached the man, affectionately calling out, "Grandfather, I’m back, and look who I’ve brought with me."

The elder turned slightly, and since Gu Fan’s view was blocked by Helen, he couldn’t clearly see the other’s face, which made him all the more curious and quickened his heartbeat.

The elder whispered a few words into Helen’s ear, and she seemed delighted, unable to suppress a laugh.

Gu Fan knew that soon his speculation would be confirmed. He was anxious, his body tensed.

Helen turned the wheelchair around, allowing the elder to face Gu Fan directly. A stranger’s oriental face gazed into Gu Fan’s eyes, a stern gaze imbued with insight into human nature, as if it could see right through to Gu Fan’s heart.

For a moment, Gu Fan felt as though his heart had been struck, his body trembling slightly.

All was quiet around them, save for the sound of the waves. Gu Fan remained silent, and so did the old man. It was as though they both didn’t know where to start, or perhaps feared that speaking first would put them at a disadvantage.

Helen couldn’t hold back and began the introductions, "Grandfather, this is Gu Fan. And Gu Fan, this is my grandfather, Gu Weihai..."

The elder waved his hand, signaling Helen to stop, his gaze fixed on Gu Fan. He then spoke solemnly, "Gu Fan, I’ve heard a lot about you. I’ve always wanted to meet you, and now that I have, do you have anything you’d like to ask me?"

Gu Fan shook his head, "I don’t have anything to ask. It was this brat who told me she was taking me to meet someone who could make me believe in you all."

Gu Weihai replied indifferently, "Now that you’ve seen me, do you believe me?"

"I’m sorry, but I still don’t believe any of you, because I don’t know you, I don’t know what kind of people you are." Gu Fan had just finished speaking when the elder shook his head with a wry smile, "Do you want to know what kind of person I am? I am someone who made you who you are today. Without everything I’ve done, your destiny wouldn’t have been changed by the Destiny Stone."

Hearing this, Gu Fan’s expression darkened, "But that’s not the destiny I wanted. On the contrary, I detest this life, so I can’t appreciate what you’ve done. Instead, I resent you."

"Resent me, on what grounds?" The elder snorted coldly, seeming quite displeased, "Back then, it was the Gu family that decided to take over the entire old house, requiring one person to be sacrificed as a scapegoat, to convince the other five households that the Destiny Stone was nonsense, to make the other five households give up on the old house. Since your grandfather was the eldest son and refused to be sacrificed, the responsibility fell to me."

"If you have resentment, then you should blame the whole Gu family, because it was their decision, not mine. I just carried out their will. If your grandfather had the courage to make that sacrifice, it wouldn’t be you whose destiny was altered. He backed out because he wanted to reap the benefits, hoping that the Destiny Stone would change the destinies of his descendants. But he never thought your destined life wouldn’t be one of wealth and honor, so if you have hatred, aim it at your grandfather. But the question is, can you do that? Blame your grandfather, blame the whole Gu family."

Listening to the elder’s words filled with resentment, Gu Fan suddenly felt a sense of guilt. He felt somewhat apologetic to the old man before him, but he didn’t say so, simply shaking his head, "I don’t want to delve into the past because the elders made that decision just to make life better for the next generation. Despite them hurting me and you, at least I can appreciate their intention."

The elder was taken aback, then smiled in understanding, "You may appreciate it, but I can hardly do the same. Do you know what my great sacrifice brought? Do you know when I found out your father was still living a mediocre life, I almost exploded with fury? I did so much, endured such immense pain, finally managed to make the other five households leave, and we, the Gu family, monopolized the Destiny Stone, only to find nothing changed. What was the meaning of everything I did?"

"Sorry about that," Gu Fan scratched his head, "No one knew that the Destiny Stone would grant me such a destiny, far from wealth and prosperity. If we had known earlier, I bet the Gu family would have been the first to move out of the old house. But you see, we win some, we lose some. And it looks like you’re doing quite well for yourself, aren’t you, second granduncle?"
