Chapter 890: Chapter 890: Female Colleague

Lu Yi checked the time and realized he was late, so he immediately ran towards the bank, cursing his luck silently. This was already his fifth time being late, he was sure to get an earful.

"Oh, my God, why do I always run into traffic jams? Can’t the heavens be fair and let everyone be stuck in traffic?" As soon as Lu Yi ran into the bank, he was stunned—the place was almost deserted, with only a few people around and no sight of the manager.

Lu Yi was puzzled because usually by this time, both colleagues and leaders would have arrived. Why were there so few now? Could it be...

Suddenly, a coworker hurried in, gasping for air. Seeing that there were only a few people in the office, he finally breathed a sigh of relief and then went to change into his uniform.

"No way!" Lu Yi furrowed his brows and then he saw another coworker rush in, looking very anxious, until he saw that there were hardly any people in the office and he finally relaxed.

This morning, over a dozen colleagues and three managers were late, and the reasons for their tardiness were all the same: either traffic jams or car troubles along the way.

Lu Yi found it hard to accept this fact. As he changed into his uniform, he took a good look at himself in the mirror. He didn’t look like a doomsayer at all.

While Lu Yi was lost in his thoughts, a coworker called out, "Lu Yi, what are you dawdling for? Hurry up and get to your station."

"Alright, I’m on it." Lu Yi stretched his neck and tossed away the annoying thoughts. No matter what, he had to first get through today and do his job well.

Lu Yi’s job was to pitch the bank’s newly launched financial products to inquiring customers, as well as promoting credit cards and attracting more deposits. In short, there was a lot to do, and the pressure was indeed great.

However, Lu Yi couldn’t have foreseen that his life would change today because he would meet someone.

After working all morning, Lu Yi was feeling tired, wondering what to have for lunch or how to invite her to eat together. Just the thought of it made Lu Yi unable to help but sneak a glance at the female colleague working next to him.

Lu Yi had always envied Gu Fan and Lin Xi’s relationship. He too wanted a girlfriend, but unfortunately, with so many things happening on Gu Fan’s side and Lu Yi covering for him without letting on, he never really had the chance to pursue anyone properly.

Lan Ning was a quiet girl who had joined the bank around the same time as Lu Yi, undergoing training together and working under the same leader, giving them plenty of opportunities for interaction.

Watching the girl he had a crush on talking and laughing with a customer, Lu Yi envied that customer, who got along so well and harmoniously with Lan Ning, unlike him who always felt nervous speaking to her.

"No, I must ask her out for lunch no matter what." Lu Yi kept bolstering his courage, telling himself he must not hesitate, because for a girl like Lan Ning, there would surely be a lot of suitors, and waiting too long would mean missing his chance.

So, Lu Yi stepped forward, but just as he was about to say something, he saw someone outside the bank waving at him, a very familiar figure. Lu Yi looked carefully and realized it was Jie who had come.

As Jie entered the bank, he headed straight for Lu Yi, but unexpected events took place. Lan Ning mistook Jie for a customer, so she stepped forward proactively, "Hello, how may I assist you?"

As soon as Jie saw Lan Ning, his eyes lit up as if he was attracted in an instant.

Lu Yi quickly intervened, "Sorry, he’s a friend; he’s here to see me."

Lan Ning acknowledged with an "Oh," and then walked away, but she didn’t notice that both Jie and Lu Yi’s gaze lingered on her retreating figure for a while.

Jie couldn’t help commenting, "This girl is not bad, huh? You’re quite something, benefiting from your prime location."

"What do you mean? There’s not even the beginnings of anything between us! There are many who like her, I wouldn’t be anywhere near the front of the queue." After saying this, Lu Yi suddenly felt very insignificant. Just now, in front of Lan Ning, he hadn’t had the courage to say more.

Jie encouraged, "Don’t give up so fast. The way you just looked at her is the same way Gu Fan used to look at Lin Xi. I know you’re deep in it."

Lu Yi was torn between laughter and tears and quickly changed the subject, "What kind of nonsense... Speak up, what is it that you want with me?"

It was then that Jie remembered he had actual business there, looking embarrassed, "Do you know what Gu Fan has been up to lately? Last time he asked me to replicate a machine for one day, saying it was urgent. I worked overtime to help him finish it, but the jerk hasn’t told me anything, not even what the gadget’s for."

"Well... Gu Fan certainly has his reasons, you have to trust him," was all Lu Yi could say, followed by an awkward smile.

Jie wore a skeptical expression, "Looks like you know something. But why won’t Gu Fan tell me? Why won’t he let me in on it? Is it because he doesn’t trust me? He can trust a doomsayer like you but not me? That doesn’t make any sense."

After hearing this, Lu Yi was almost fuming and complained, "Could you please drop the ’doomsayer’ bit, alright?"

"Sorry, I just can’t help but think of ’doomsayer’ when I see you. My apologies, my apologies," Jie laughed and apologized, and Lu Yi wasn’t angry anymore. However, it was working hours and Lu Yi really couldn’t stay and chat with Jie, so he suggested they meet up after work.

"Okay, it’s a deal. I’ll come find you after you get off work, and you have to tell me, okay?" Jie was delighted and immediately left the bank.

Lu Yi felt troubled, to tell or not to tell? If he spoke without Gu Fan’s permission, that felt wrong, but not saying anything didn’t feel fair to Jie either—it was a dilemma.

As Lu Yi was worrying, he glanced up unintentionally and caught Lan Ning watching him. She quickly looked away, pretending to admire the view outside the window.

"Strange, was Lan Ning just looking at me?" A thrill of excitement and anticipation rose in Lu Yi’s heart.

Once Lu Yi got back to work, Lan Ning resumed watching him secretly, but with furrowed brows, "Weird, ever since that Jie arrived, a strange energy has been emanating from Lu Yi. What could it be? I’ve never seen anything like it."

Lan Ning began to feel there was more to Lu Yi than met the eye, so she approached him, initiating conversation about work, much to Lu Yi’s elation. This was the first time Lan Ning had taken the initiative to speak to him, and as they stood closer than ever, his heart raced with an indescribable, unusual emotion surging within.
