Chapter 622: Act the Whole Show

Chapter 622: Chapter 622: Act the Whole Show

Deep into the night, the thick clouds covered the stars and the moon. The air was heavy with gloom and everyone was on edge. They stood by the shore, silently praying as they watched the freighter quietly stationed on the sea for Gu Fan and Jie.

"Quick, look. The mist is coming." With a pointer from Xiaohu, everyone saw a huge cloud of fog rolling toward them from the sea. The overwhelmingly white mist advanced quickly, enveloping everything in its path.

Despite knowing that they were safe on the island, everyone was still afraid. They watched the fog swallow the freighter and advanced toward the island, fear compelling them to take a few steps backward.

Yet Lin Xi remained calm: "Hiding will be of no use if danger truly comes."

Hearing this, everyone stopped retreating and stared at the advancing fog. Their hearts braced for the unknown, and they stood their ground until the fog enveloped them completely.

Meanwhile, Gu Fan, Jie, and the boss were enjoying their late-night meal on the ship, complaining with mock annoyance, "Why is it so late? I’m starved."

Upon hearing this, the Boss couldn’t help but laugh. "Gu Fan, I have to admire your attitude. Even in the face of fear, you can still crack jokes."

"I’m not afraid. The fact that I’m here means that I’m not afraid." Gu Fan replied stoutly, although his legs were slightly trembling.

The fear was not only Gu Fan’s. Jie was also subtly shaking. They both knew what would unfold and braced for the inevitable, but the thudding footsteps that echoed across the ship made their fears resurface.

"What’s supposed to come will come," the Boss finished his drink and then left for another location. His mission was rescue not bait. After losing so badly last time, he couldn’t stand it and decided to restore his pride this time.

As the footsteps grew nearer, Jie took a deep breath. "Gu Fan, I’m not afraid. But is it too late if we regret now?"

Lu Yi made a face. "Oh please, we don’t even need to pretend. I’m already terrified."

Shut up, I’m freaking out too," Gu Fan replied just as a loud explosion sounded. It was the ship’s door, deformed by a foreign force.

Everything repeated as before. Gu Fan and Lu Yi both stood up, their eyes fixed on the deformed door, swallowing nervously.

With the second impact, the deformation of the ship’s door worsened. Seemingly unable to withstand more, the door burst open on the third assault, and a vast wave of mist flooded in.

Gu Fan and Jie were quick to act. They ran towards a different passageway, screaming in fear- although it sounded unconvincing.

"Jie, you sound fake. You’re going to raise suspicions," Gu Fan snapped, to which Jie retorted, "You’re not much better. Your acting sucks."

"Nonsense. This is how I scream when I’m scared. There’s no acting involved. It’s just... natural reflexes," Gu Fan argued back.

Frustrated, Jie didn’t bother to argue but was horrified by the speed at which the mist was advancing, relentlessly chasing them.

After some time, Gu Fan and Jie, tired and out of breath, decided to surrender. Jie said, "Okay, that’s enough. We’ve done our part and should stop here."

"No way. Only when we are difficult to capture can we eliminate any suspicion. We must resist when necessary," Gu Fan insisted, holding his electric baton.

Jie was taken aback. "What if you actually scare them away?"

Gu Fan shrugged indifferently. "If they defeated the Boss, how could they be weak? Only by being scared, running, resisting, and eventually getting caught can we make it look convincing."

Without a choice, Jie agreed, and they both heard sounds of fighting, most probably from the Boss encountering some trouble.

Jie remarked, "That boss really holds a grudge."

The mist surged into their location, they found themselves completely surrounded. Despite their fear, they hollered loudly to make sure they were heard outside.

Back at the shore, everyone was perplexed to hear the shouts. "Can someone tell me why they are making such a ruckus? Are they scared or excited?" Lu Yi questioned.

Shaking her head, Su Hui said, "Who knows what kind of stunt they are trying to pull."

At that moment, Gu Fan felt something approaching in the mist. He readied himself and all of a sudden, Jie was lifted and dragged away with only a yell left in his wake.

"It happened so fast," Gu Fan said under his breath, rigid with fear. He remembered the dangers they faced last time and how he overcame him, using them to suppress his fear.

A hand suddenly reached out from the mist, gripping Gu Fan by the neck and hoisting him up. The chilling touch aroused his fear. Nevertheless, Gu Fan, sticking to his ’do the whole charade’ rule, extended his electric baton and shocked whatever was in the mist, shocking himself in the process.

The shock seemed to have taken whatever that was in the mist off guard, and it quickly released Gu Fan. Unable to move from the shock, Gu Fan thought, there’s no need for further acting. I can’t even move. They should take me away now.

However, as he regained his mobility, there were no further attacks.

"Is that it? Can’t take a hit?" Gu Fan wondered if they had scared their pursuers away. If so, what would Jie’s reaction be upon finding that he was the only one dragged away?

Just as Gu Fan was wondering what to do next, something grabbed him by the collar and dragged him away. This time, he didn’t resist. "Bro, that’s more like it. You wouldn’t reject something handed to you, right?"
