Those Classmates who Suddenly Disappeared -
Chapter 592: A Village
Chapter 592: Chapter 592: A Village
After the battle, the cannibal tribe had suffered substantial losses and had no choice but to retreat. However, before they withdrew, they cast a menacing look at Gu Fan and Su Hui, as if to say, "We’ll meet again."
As soon as the primitives left, Gu Fan, utterly exhausted, finally let his arms fall. Although he had managed to save their lives and their water supply, one of his crewmen was killed on the spot, two had been captured, and even Xu Haowen had been taken.
Naturally, Gu Fan would not leave Xu Haowen behind. However, Su Hui suggested that they first take back the food and water they had barely managed to secure, after which they could all discuss how to save Xu Haowen together.
Upon seeing the ladles filled with fruit in the crew led by Su Hui, Gu Fan made up his mind, knowing this would solve the problem of food and water.
"Alright, you all go back first. I’ll stay behind to find people. I fear delaying would put Xu Haowen in danger." Gu Fan couldn’t simply leave, but food and water were also critical, and so he decided to stay behind.
Understanding Gu Fan’s feelings, Su Hui too decided to stay with him. She asked that all ammo be given to her, just in case.
"Are you sure? Even though both of you are quite formidable, there are ultimately just two of you," Lu Yi worriedly expressed, wanting to stay and help.
However, Gu Fan responded, "Your task is equally essential. We must bring back the food and water; this is our hope to survive. Remember, the captain’s companions are suffering greatly. You must safely and promptly deliver the food and water back."
"Alright, do take care. After we deliver the food and water, we’ll come back to help immediately." Lu Yi agreed, but Ouyang Jin was worried, "We’re not familiar with this forest. If we get separated, how should we find you afterward?"
Gu Fan pointed in one direction, "If you hear gunshots when you come back, it means we’ve engaged with the savages. Hurry over to help us. But if it’s quiet, there’s a pond that way, which Lu Yi and Jie both know. We’ll meet there at three in the morning. Also, remind Lin Xi that this ship is important—Lin Xi mustn’t leave it without proper consideration."
"Alright, we understand. Take care." After saying this, Ouyang Jin, Lu Yi, Jie, and two other crew members left carrying their food and water.
Now only Gu Fan and Su Hui were left. The two of them gritted their teeth and began to follow in the direction the primitive people had departed. They were aware of the risks associated with this journey, but they were determined not to abandon their crewmate.
For Gu Fan, the reason was simple. His companion could have comfortably chosen to stay at home but had chosen to face danger and aid him. Thus, others may abandon Xu Haowen, but Gu Fan could not.
For Su Hui, her reason was also straightforward. Anything involving Gu Fan involved her as well. Through their shared trials and tribulations, they had become inseparable. No one would abandon anyone else.
As they cautiously journeyed through the forest, they made note of the footprints and dragged marks. These all seemed to guide Gu Fan and Su Hui in the right direction. After walking for some distance, Su Hui expressed her concerns, "We don’t know how many savages there are out there. There could be thousands. We can’t bank on just the two of us to save Xu Haowen. I’m not suggesting we give him up; I just want you to be prepared."
"I know, thank you for the reminder." Gu Fan did not want to lose any of his companions. But he was aware that some undesirable realities had to be faced after experiencing so many dangers.
Suddenly, Gu Fan and Su Hui heard some strange noises. Their first instinct was to hide and assess the situation. They observed two primitive men passing by, heading in the same direction that Gu Fan had anticipated. It seemed like they were returning home.
They found that the two men walking ahead served as perfect guides. Gu Fan and Su Hui quietly trailed them. Seeing the primitives’ barely covered bodies, primitive weapons, and strange physiques, they couldn’t help but wonder why the primitives harbored such animosity toward modern men.
"Can’t we communicate with each other? Why must we resort to confrontation?" Gu Fan was perplexed. He wondered if the savages were particularly fond of human flesh, hence their behavior.
Su Hui had a different perspective, "Perhaps they find us strange and think we pose a threat to them. Like if you saw an alien arriving in a flying saucer, much more technologically advanced than us, wouldn’t you be worried about a possible invasion of Earth?"
Gu Fan found this logic somewhat reasonable, though he wondered if it was fair to deem them a threat without trying to communicate first.
"Perhaps the savages have tried communicating before and got hurt. So, they particularly fear us and consider us a threat." Su Hui’s words made sense within the context of the Triangle Sea Area, where pirates usually roamed about, most likely not being friendly to the primitives.
After following the two primitives for a distance, they finally saw a white high wall, which left Gu Fan and Su Hui astonished. They wondered if the primitives had this technology to not only build walls but also to paint them white.
Upon getting closer, Gu Fan and Su Hui gasped at what they saw. The high wall was made from piled-up bones, a bone-chilling sight. No doubt, Xu Haowen and the others had been brought here and were probably scared out of their wits.
The entrance to the fort opened, and the two primitives walked in. After assessing their surroundings, Gu Fan and Su Hui chose not to follow and observed from the outside instead.
"What do we do? Do we make a move?" Gu Fan was anxious. He could faintly hear people’s shouts and couldn’t tell if they were the crew’s or Xu Haowen’s.
In response, Su Hui shook her head, "We have no idea what’s going on inside, how the savages are on their guard, charging in rashly wouldn’t be wise. If we do that, I doubt we can save anyone. We should observe for a little longer."
"Okay!" Gu Fan and Su Hui crouched in the forest, closely watching every move within the fort, their ears straining for any sound. If they heard Xu Haowen’s cry of distress, it would mean he was in danger. At that point, they would have no choice but to charge in head-on.
After waiting for a while, seeing that the fort was peaceful and occasionally hearing an odd language, Gu Fan and Su Hui felt it was alright. They then crept near the fort to observe the situation inside through the walls and entrance chinks.
The fort, constructed by the primitives, was very crude. The houses were merely frameworks of tree trunks and branches; entering and exiting required one to bend over, making it an apparent struggle. Furthermore, some seemed to be living in caves.
After watching for a while, Gu Fan finally located Xu Haowen. He, along with two other crewmen, was tied up to a stake. As they were too far away, they couldn’t see their expressions clearly, but they appeared to be trembling.
What horrified Gu Fan most was the sight of several primitives processing the corpse of the crewman who was shot with an arrow. It was an unbearable sight.
