Chapter 590: Chapter 590: A Big Pit

Lu Yi walked hesitantly through the unfamiliar island’s forest, holding the shield and leading the group, his heart pounding with panic. He looked left and right, taking a step with every glance. It was as if he were a child crossing the road.

Lu Yi’s way of moving was greatly hindering the team’s progress. Everyone else was left to walk and stop repeatedly based on his pace, which became more uncomfortable the further they went.

Gu Fan couldn’t stand it any longer. He said, "For goodness’ sake, brother, I understand caution is necessary, but you can’t keep us on edge like this."

"Nonsense, I’m at the very front, I’m the most endangered, of course, I have to be more careful," Lu Yi spoke righteously. But Ouyang Jin, who was behind him, countered, "Who says the one leading is in the most danger? The enemy could attack us from behind, right?"

Hearing this, the crew members at the back immediately grew tense and began walking backward.

Xu Haowen also gave his opinion, "If I were the enemy, I’d surely set an ambush and wait for all the prey to walk into the trap before launching an attack from the side. Being in the middle can be just as dangerous."

Everyone snorted in disdain, "Please, Xu Haowen, you’re the one right in the middle!"

"Am I? Really?" Xu Haowen looked around and his face turned pale. He tried to swap places with others, but no one would comply.

Seeing everyone anxious, Su Hui had enough. She scoffed, "This island might not even be dangerous. Please stop freaking yourselves out."

"Exactly, everything was fine until everyone started getting paranoid," Gu Fan added, feigning an exasperated sigh.

Ouyang Jin estimated the distance, figuring they’d reach the island’s center shortly. By then, they’d have to look for water resources. For efficiency’s sake, it would be best to split into teams.

Upon hearing about splitting into teams, everyone was terrified. Stranded in this unknown, pitch-black place with possible threats lurking, the more allies at one’s side, the better. No one wanted to split up.

However, Gu Fan proposed, "If we’re worried about potential dangers on this island, shouldn’t we find water and leave as soon as possible?"

Both personnel safety and finding water quickly were utmost priorities. In an effort to strike a balance, Su Hui suggested splitting into two teams. The first team would comprise of herself, Ouyang Jin, Xu Haowen, and two crew members.

The second team would include Gu Fan, Lu Yi, Jie, and three other crew members.

Each team was assigned a bucket. If they encountered danger, they’d scream for help, and the other team would come to the rescue.

"Alright, everyone, be careful!" After Gu Fan finished speaking, he couldn’t help but glance at Su Hui.

Lu Yi and Jie also kept their eyes on Su Hui. To be precise, they kept their eyes on the gun in Su Hui’s hand. With such a skilled shooter, everyone felt somewhat safer. Now that they were splitting up, people were naturally reluctant.

Gu Fan’s team continued onwards, thinking about their current dire situation. It wasn’t just the unknown of the Triangle Sea Area but also the lack of supplies. When they had no choice but to leave the cargo ship, most of their resources had to be abandoned. Even if they could find food and water on this island, what about other supplies like tents, medicine, diving gear, among others?

Gu Fan wondered whether they should resupply here before leaving the island, return to land, buy new supplies there, and then return once they were adequately prepared. However, that would take too much time.

He pondered what to do next. He had no idea where their big boss and Qian Feng were at this point. Gu Fan didn’t want to fall too far behind them. He was determined to reach the destination before them, foil their plans, and seek justice for his parents.

Suddenly, Lu Yi couldn’t help but exclaim, "It’s water! I see water! My God, we’re saved!"

Upon hearing this, everyone was overjoyed, and Gu Fan stopped his musings, rushing forward. What they saw was a lake, its water clear enough to see the bottom.

The three crew members were the most excited. They began to fill the bucket with water while taking a few sips. It tasted fine, not problematic in any way. Although it didn’t taste great, it was a godsend for their parched throats.

Lu Yi and Jie also took a sip, reveling in the refreshing feeling that came with the long-needed hydration, and they promptly gulped down a few more. Their throats instantly felt much better.

Gu Fan, however, remained alert, studying the water’s reaction. His previous experience in foreign lands was fresh in his mind, and he did not want to repeat the same mistake.

After careful observation, Gu Fan found no danger in the lake. It was so clear; any abnormal things beneath the water would have been noticed by now.

Once Gu Fan was sure it was safe, he took a few swigs and thoroughly enjoyed it, taking a few more mouthfuls after that.

Everyone drank their fill of water before picking up the bucket and heading back to their rendezvous spot.

But at that moment, they noticed a problem. Having no familiarity with the island, they found it hard to tell the directions apart. The environment looked identical no matter where they looked, making it difficult to retrace their steps.

"What do we do? Are we lost?" Lu Yi fretted. But Gu Fan waved his concern off, saying, "It’s not that bad. Even if we’ve forgotten the way back, the island’s not so big. It’s easy to make our way to the coast. The important thing is to meet up with Sister Su and the rest. We can’t just leave them and head back, can we? They may be waiting for us at the meeting point!"

His words made sense. As long as they could return, there wasn’t much to worry about. Everyone felt a great deal lighter. Now that they’d solved the water problem, they just needed to hang on until they could return to land.

Suddenly, Gu Fan furrowed his brows. He sniffed the air and asked, "Do you smell something strange?"

Upon hearing this, everyone tried identifying the air’s scent and realized there was an odd smell. However, Lu Yi thought it might be coming from the plants and that there was no reason for alarm.

Gu Fan hoped he was being unnecessarily cautious. They moved forward once again, inwardly praying that everything would go smoothly.

As they went along, one of the crew members failed to watch his step. He lost his footing and rolled to the side, plummeting into a pit.

"Are you okay?" Everyone rushed to help. But when they got closer and saw what was in the pit, they instantly gasped.

The crew member had fallen into a mess, surrounded by hard objects. Once he regained his senses and saw what was around him, he paled with fear. His pit was filled with corpses, and it reeked.
