Chapter 589: Chapter 589: Shadow Under the Sea

"Xiaoling!" Lin Xi turned around, trying to ask something, but upon seeing the pale expression on Gu Ling’s face, a sense of foreboding surged within her.

Gu Ling seemed to have sensed some tremendous danger, appearing extremely anxious: "Sister Lin Xi, think of something quick, I have a premonition, a very bad premonition, coming from the sea."

Lin Xi absolutely believed what Xiaoling said, but unfortunately, they couldn’t escape. If they left, then Gu Fan and Su Hui would be left on the island without reinforcements, which would make things even more dangerous.

No! Besides, Lin Xi also knew that there was no way out. They must find food and water on this island, otherwise, they wouldn’t last long at sea. In other words, they were now throwing caution to the wind.

A gust of wind blew by, giving everyone a chill. The trees on the island swayed in the wind, making rustling noises, as if something was moving among them.

Everyone was praying for Gu Fan and the others to be safe, while Lin Xi had to be on guard for threats from the sea. They had to protect the boat at all costs. Everyone’s hope for survival rested with Gu Fan and Su Hui, while the hope of escape fell solely on Lin Xi. The responsibility was enormous.

Lin Xi had others keep an eye on the island while she herself watched the sea, paying attention to every movement. She dared not slack off for even a moment, fearing that any lapse would result in a terrible price.

Lin Xi decided to perform her supernatural power, gazing into the calm sea. She saw a huge shadow moving under the water but couldn’t make out what it was, though it seemed to be avoiding the island.

"What on earth is that?" Lin Xi dared not speak out loud, fearing it would cause panic and chaos among the group.

Suddenly, a bout of coughing woke everyone up. Qin Jia’s complexion wasn’t looking good and her recovery wasn’t going well despite Du Jun’s attentive care. She felt guilty, as if she was holding everyone back.

In response, Lin Xi told Qin Jia not to worry, that they were grateful for their presence here and wouldn’t blame them for anything.

While Lin Xi was distracted talking to Qin Jia, a noise on the sea surface caught her attention. By the time she looked over, all she saw was the water splashing up, with no sign of anything else.

Little Tiger looked the most solemn, and Lin Xi immediately asked him, "What’s wrong, Little Tiger? Do you know something?"

Little Tiger nodded, "I’ve said before that aside from the fog, the Triangle Sea Area is also home to many terrifying creatures. Pirates who set sail might evade the fog, but they can still be attacked by sea monsters."

Upon hearing these words, everyone was filled with fear, but the captain scolded, "Boy, stop talking nonsense. Do you think scaring people is fun?"

Little Tiger was anxious, "I’m not trying to scare you, this is true! I’ve been in the Triangle Sea Area for a long time and have seen several instances of pirates who never came back from sailing out, even when there was no fog or storm. No one knows exactly what happened, but it’s rumoured that they encountered the monsters beneath the sea."

The captain scoffed at this, "Didn’t you say before that there are other pirate groups in the Triangle Sea Area? Maybe it was the doing of those pirates?"

Little Tiger was certain in his response, "No, that’s not possible, there’s an agreement between pirate gangs. They should assist each other, not attack."

But the captain still looked unconvinced, "Sea monsters, that’s just speculation from you lot, none of you have actually seen them."

On this point, Little Tiger really had no retort, because he hadn’t seen them himself. He’d only heard stories, but pirates vanishing inexplicably is something that had occurred more than once, and not just to one pirate gang.

Lin Xi sided with the captain, advising Little Tiger not to make baseless claims. She knew that whether these stories were true or not, they could not afford to cause a panic at this stage.

Just then, a crew member yelled out, "Is that a ship over there?"

Upon hearing this, everyone started to strain their eyes in that direction. Indeed, there was what appeared to be the silhouette of a ship sailing in the darkness.

If there were food and water on that ship, they’d be saved! The idea made the crew member want to shout and get their attention, but Little Tiger stopped him, pointing out that it could be a pirate ship.

It also occurred to everyone else that blindly hailing an unknown ship carried risks, so they decided to pretend they hadn’t seen it.

As they watched the ship grow more distant, there were sighs and expressions of disappointment, and some even regretted not taking the chance when they had it.

Suddenly, the sea exploded as if something had burst, kicking up massive waves which swallowed the ship. Everyone watched in shock, struggling to understand what had just happened. Once the waves calmed down, there was nothing left on the surface of the sea, the ship had completely vanished.

"No, it can’t be!" Panic set in among the group. They realized Little Tiger was right, there really was something lurking in the waters of the Triangle Sea Area.

Du Jun suggested, "What if we leave the ship and go ashore? Isn’t it safer on land?"

"Safer on land?" Lin Xi didn’t consider herself an expert in this regard and would need professional advice.

But the captain was firmly opposed, "Whatever it was, it must be a massive creature, otherwise it couldn’t have taken down a ship that easily. But we’re in shallow waters now, it would be difficult for any large sea creature to get close without the risk of running aground. So, their threat level diminishes."

Everyone trusted the captain’s judgment until they realized that the ship was starting to tilt. Running over to check, they found that their ship had run aground due to the retreating tide.

"I was negligent, I forgot about the tide," the captain reproached himself. However, on the bright side, at least the sea creature wouldn’t be able to reach them now.

But Lin Xi was worried, "What if Gu Fan and Su Hui return asking us to evacuate? We wouldn’t be able to leave."

"Exactly!" The captain nodded, indicating that the situation wasn’t looking good.

Yet as soon as the ship ran aground, Gu Ling’s expression lightened considerably. It appeared that the creature in the sea was no longer a threat, at least for the time being.

At that moment, Lin Xi wished she could summon a bolt of lightning to strike the shadow beneath the water, to see what it really was, how frightful, and how massive it might be.

"Oh, Gu Fan, please come back quickly, I’m afraid I can’t hold on much longer on my own." Lin Xi could feel the pressure, and she needed someone to share in it.
