Chapter 338: Chapter 338: Crisis Lurking Everywhere

With a crack, Lin Xi used her supernatural power to forcibly twist a snow monster’s neck. She was covered in sweat from having overexerted her magic power earlier to heal everyone else’s injuries. Now barely able to cast another spell, she staggered with every step, clearly unable to keep up.

Seeing this, the snow monster, sensing she was on her last legs, let out a roar and charged at her, determined to eliminate the threat posed by Lin Xi.

"Protect Lin Xi, or we’re all doomed!" Du Changhui shouted as people from the ancient town arrived one after another, courageously shielding Lin Xi.

Despite the townpeople’s bravado, the snow monster paid them no heed, charging forward and either sending them flying or trampling them underfoot. Their physical size and brute strength, coupled with the force of their charge, were simply too much for any ordinary person to withstand.

"Damn!" Unable to stand by and watch any longer, Gu Fan ran headlong towards the snow monster, launching himself at it from the side.

However, the monster had eyes only for Lin Xi, and chose to ignore the flank attack. It had full confidence that no one could stop it.

"Are you insane, Gu Fan?" Lu Yi, Jie, and Leng Le tried to hold him back, but it was too late, he was already too close to the monster.

Lin Xi was frantic: "Idiot, don’t come! It’s dangerous!"

Gu Fan seemed to pay no heed, he timed his move just as the monster was charging, then lunged at one of its legs, which sent the charging monster falling flat on its face.

The faster it runs, the harder it falls. The snow monster tumbled clumsily, and before it could even get back up, Gu Fan had scrambled onto its back, drawn his dagger and slit its throat.

The monster never saw it coming, it fell to the ground without even having the chance to cry out.

Exhausted and aching all over, Gu Fan casually sat on the fallen snow monster and said to Lin Xi, "You owe me one, don’t forget that."

At this moment, Lu Yi, Jie, and Leng Le arrived. "Brother, you’re a badass, beating a snow monster single-handedly!" they exclaimed.

"Enough with the flattery, we wouldn’t stand a chance in a straight fight," replied Gu Fan, feeling utterly drained.

Up to this point, they had managed to take out just a few snow monsters. Casualties were mounting on Lin Xi and the local boss’s side, with over three hundred men dead or injured. To make matters worse, Hai was leading a group of men heading their way, paying no heed whatsoever to the dire straits they were in.

"You’ve got to be kidding me! Even at a time like this, they won’t let us be," Gu Fan grimaced, not in the least bit keen to waste energy dealing with Hai and his men.

Just then, a giant hand reached out from the snow and grabbed someone’s foot. Amidst screams of terror, the person was dragged down into the snow.

All who saw this were terrified. Gu Fan was the first to yell, "Watch out, everyone! There’re snow monsters under the snow!"

At Gu Fan’s warning, more snow monsters began to attack from beneath the snow. Hands reached out again and again from the snowy ground, catching people by the foot and dragging them down into the snow.

"You’ve got to be kidding!" Lu Yi, Jie, Leng Le, and Lin Xi ran for their lives, their faces ashen.

Gu Fan fled as well. Looking back, he saw that Hai seemed to have been nabbed but he used his shotgun to shoot into the snow, which quickly solved the problem.

Along the way, Gu Fan wondered just how many snow monsters there were. Why did some of them leap out to attack while others hid beneath the snow?

As he ran, Gu Fan saw someone not far ahead getting grabbed by the feet. Despite howling in terror, they were dragged into the snow. However, Gu Fan noticed that the hand from beneath the snow was relatively small, which led him to believe that these were young snow monsters too small to engage in direct combat.

"What should we do? What should we do? Danger’s lurking everywhere!" A terrified Lu Yi said. Under such circumstances, it would be abnormal not to feel afraid.

Gu Fan was thinking of a solution whilst also worrying about the safety of Su Hui and the others, unsure if they had encountered even greater danger.

Eventually, he saw Su Hui and the others running back towards him. Though confused about what had happened to them, after doing a headcount, he found that none of them was missing.

Lu Yi asked curiously: "Why are you all running back here, Sister Su?"

Gasping for breath, Su Hui replied, "Don’t even get me started. We didn’t run far before we were surrounded by the people from the ancient town. Then the snow monsters attacked, and it was a chaotic mess of a battle. We consider ourselves lucky to have escaped." Done with her report, Su Hui took a good look around. The situation was grim indeed.

"What do we do? How do we get out of here?" Ning Qi was panicking. The greatest danger she had ever faced before was a pack of wolves. Compared to that, this was far more terrifying.

"I’m trying to come up with a plan, but...." Gu Fan was interrupted by a person flying right over his head.

Suddenly, they all felt the snow underfoot ripple as though something was moving beneath. Knowing that something was amiss, they quickly retreated.

Thanks to their quick reflexes, Gu Fan and Su Hui and the rest avoided getting grabbed by the hands reaching out from the snow.

Su Hui and old man Tian quickly took action, sticking their guns into the snow and firing. A miserable cry followed.

"Let’s see what’s underneath the snow." Under Gu Fan’s lead, everyone began to dig through layers of snow, stopping only when they hit a bloody patch knowing they were close.

They found a small snow monster that appeared to be a juvenile. Its size was comparable to an ordinary person, hence its decision not to attack directly.

Together with a few others, Gu Fan hauled the snow monster out. Underneath where the juvenile snow monster had been hiding was a tunnel through the snow. According to old man Tian, the continuous snowfall at Yuxueyun Mountain had resulted in a thick layer of snow, and the snow monsters had the ability to dig tunnels in the snow. This indeed could allow them to launch attacks from beneath the snow.

Lu Yi urged from the side, "This is not the time to admire the snow monsters’ abilities. We should focus on escaping."

"Run? Where can we run to?" Gu Fan sighed, and Su Hui shook her head because they both realized that no matter how far or in which direction anyone ran, there would always be a snow monster chasing and finishing off the stragglers.

The situation was clear; the snow monsters weren’t going to let anyone leave. The more frightened and scattered the people were, the more easily they would get picked off one by one. The only solution was to take out all the snow monsters here.

Lu Yi promptly shouted, "Everyone, don’t scatter. We need to stick together!" However, his exhortation fell on deaf ears.

At this moment, two snow monsters noticed the motionless juvenile snow monster by Gu Fan’s side. Enraged, they let out loud cries before charging towards Gu Fan, avenging their comrade’s death.
