Those Classmates who Suddenly Disappeared -
Chapter 308: Ice and Fire Glowworm
Chapter 308: Chapter 308: Ice and Fire Glowworm
After a while, through the binoculars, Gu Fan saw Deng Wenli standing still at the same spot and Ning Qi seemed to be very distressed, looking utterly lost.
"What on earth happened?" Gu Fan had a bad feeling, then he saw numerous blue glowing lights drifting towards Ning Qi.
Ning Qi also saw these blue fireflies. Her face instantly lost color as she started to run. She was scared to tears. Even though she fell, she picked herself up and kept running, rolling and crawling in her desperate bid to escape.
The glowworms were still chasing Ning Qi, which greatly puzzled Gu Fan - why did these insects like Ning Qi so much? And how could there be glowworms in such a snowy environment?
Gu Fan felt that something was not right. Seeing the panicked look on Ning Qi’s face, and Deng Wenli standing frozen in place, he feared...
When she was close to the cabin, Ning Qi was running out of strength and fell once more. Feeling desperate, Gu Fan suddenly darted out, rushed to Ning Qi’s side, grabbed her, and then ran back with her in tow.
Ning Qi was shocked, her thoughts in a whirl. Why would Gu Fan appear in a miracle-like timing? But with the urgency of the situation, Ning Qi decided not to dwell on it.
Once Gu Fan and Ning Qi made it back to the cabin, they closed the door tightly and quickly checked all the windows to ensure there were no cracks. The commotion woke up many people.
"Wake up, everybody, wake up quickly!" Ning Qi yelled anxiously, alerting everyone that something was wrong.
Su Hui was the fastest to respond, asking "What happened?" as she was getting dressed.
"There is a type of glowworm outside. It bit Deng Wenli, and he’s just frozen there," Ning Qi said with a sob in her voice, clearly terrified.
Even as Su Hui hastily dressed and picked up a weapon to stand beside Gu Fan, she stared at the window and indeed saw many blue lights swarming around the cabin.
More and more people got up, entering a state of emergency, and began asking Ning Qi what had happened.
Ning Qi explained that Deng Wenli had gone out to look at the starry sky, and even though she had opposed him and followed him outside to get him to come back, she failed to prevent him from encountering the blue glowworms.
Hearing this, Gu Fan silently sympathized with Deng Wenli - it was entirely Deng Wenli’s own fault for what had happened, and Ning Qi had shifted all the blame away from herself.
Of course, from Ning Qi’s point of view, she was naturally going to say this. Was she going to admit in front of Hu Bo and everyone else that she had secretly met with Deng Wenli and then had run into trouble? If she admitted it, her true nature would be exposed in front of Hu Bo and the supervisors, leaving her with no footing.
Gu Fan didn’t pay attention to Ning Qi’s troubles, saying instead, "Everyone, check quickly to see if there are any damaged parts in this room. We absolutely can’t let a single glowworm in. If you don’t want to end up like Deng Wenli, move fast."
At these words, everyone sprang into action, not leaving any corner unchecked. They stuffed things under the door to make sure there were absolutely no cracks before relaxing a bit.
Su Hui said, "If I’m not mistaken, those who froze to death before must have been attacked by these fireflies."
Gu Fan nodded, "Yes, that’s why they had such desperate expressions on their faces. The bullet casings scattered on the ground were evidence of their futile counterattack."
Ouyang Jin glanced at the outside, those blue glowworms were still flying around the cabin, looking like they wouldn’t give up easily. She felt a chill crawl on her scalp and asked, "Old man, what on earth are these things?"
Many people looked at old man Tian, expecting him to provide an answer due to his familiarity with the snow forest.
Old man Tian looked very serious. "I’ve never seen them either, but when I was young I heard the elders say that there is a kind of firefly in this snow forest that eats ice and snow all year round. It’s called the Ice and Fire Glowworm. It’s said to carry venom, and once bitten, you would appear frozen. I thought the elders were just trying to scare us, never thought it would be true."
Hearing this, everyone’s faces fell, feeling that they were facing great danger. Lu Yi chose this inappropriate time to say, "I knew it, after a few peaceful days, I knew we would run into big trouble... as expected..."
"Doomsayer, we’ve had enough of you." Ouyang Jin and Ah Jie could bear it no longer, they knocked Lu Yi to the ground and began to brawl.
Watching everyone’s tense faces, Gu Fan was also a little worried, but he reassured them, "Don’t worry. These Ice and Fire Glowworms can’t get in, we are safe for now."
However, Kang Rong pointed out, "But we can’t stay here forever, right? Sooner or later, our supplies will run out."
Gu Fan was initially trying to boost morale, but Kang Rong’s words greatly deflated it.
At this moment, old man Tian said, "It’s okay, we just need to hold out until morning. These Ice and Fire Glowworms are afraid of sunlight and only move during the night."
"Really? Then we should be fine." Everyone breathed a sigh of relief, thinking that when it was daylight, they would be safe. Simple, very simple.
However, the next words from old man Tian almost shattered everyone’s morale. "But, I only heard that from the elders when I was a kid. I’m not sure if it’s true."
"So, it’s as good as saying nothing then?" Everyone shook their heads wryly, only hoping that what old man Tian said was true.
Gu Fan also understood this point. At night, the blue glow can be seen and they could know if they were being attacked. But if the Ice and Fire Glowworms were still active in the daytime, it would be hard for everyone to handle.
At this point, Xu Haowen, who had always been staring out the window, said, "Don’t you guys think the blue lights outside are increasing?"
Hearing this, many people took a closer look and found that Xu Haowen was not mistaken. The blue glow outside was not just from ten or twenty insects anymore, but much more than before.
Luckily the cabin didn’t have any cracks that would allow Ice and Fire Glowworms to enter. Otherwise, if such a large group barged in, likely no one would survive the night.
Lu Yi couldn’t help but complain to the window full of Ice and Fire Glowworms, "If you can’t get in, why don’t you just leave? It doesn’t make sense for us to wait it out here, making it impossible for us to sleep."
Gu Fan said, "Alright, we should be safe tonight, so everyone can rest. However, just to make sure, we will have a few more people keep watch."
