Chapter 270: Chapter 270: Kept a Trick Up The Sleeve

Gu Fan didn’t know how long he’d been unconscious, only that it felt like an eternity. When he woke up, he found himself alone with a lingering sense of fatigue.

Thinking back on events before blacking out, Gu Fan was irritated. What was this? Bridge-burning after crossing the river? What Lin Xi did was just too much.

Just as Gu Fan was fuming, he heard a chilling voice from behind him: "Finally, you’re awake. I thought I’d been waiting forever."

"You’ve got to be kidding me. That voice?" Gu Fan tensed up in cold sweat. When he slowly turned around, just one glimpse was enough for him to wish to pass out again. This was his most dangerous foe.

The big boss was sitting behind Gu Fan in an armchair, legs crossed, with a cold expression on his face. He said, "I want to know what happened, and I want the truth. Your life depends on your honesty."

Gu Fan immediately nodded in agreement: "Rest assured, honesty is my best policy. But I’d like to know how you ended up here."

"I received intel that you guys got the fourth blueprint, so I came to have a look." The big boss’s indifferent words made Gu Fan frown and he couldn’t help but blurt out, "Man, you’ve got sharp ears."

Gu Fan then filled him in on what happened, including how he was knocked out. Speaking of it, he found it somewhat embarrassing that he’d been taken down so easily by Lin Xi. It was, frankly, a disgrace.

"So it seems Qian Ye plans to leave you out now that he has the full blueprint..." The big boss gave a meaningful smile, looking at Gu Fan with mockery. He added, "You helped Qian Ye so much, yet you got used in the end. Tragic."

"Could you please stop, I’m already devastated." Gu Fan was visibly distressed. This hurt his pride.

The big boss appeared nonchalant, "Fine. Since Qian Ye has left with the blueprint, and you’ve seen its contents, you could assist me by being ahead of him and finding the location. Remember, whatever you find should be handed over to me."

"I can do that, but why should I?" Gu Fan looked perplexed. The big boss gave a suggestive smile as if anticipating this response. He said, "Firstly, because your life is in my hands, so you’ve got no choice but to agree. Secondly, even if you tried to be clever about it, I hold your girlfriend Leng Le’s life too. You’d have to agree anyway, unless your heart is really that cold."

"What? You’ve taken Leng Le?" Gu Fan felt a chill and immediately dialed Leng Le’s number.

"Save your breath. It won’t connect." Upon saying this, the big boss showed Gu Fan a video of Leng Le tied up, her hair disheveled, and her face pale, apparently subjected to some kind of torment.

"What have you done to her?" Gu Fan was furious. Ignoring the power disparity, he seized the big boss by his clothes, glaring at him.

In response, the big boss gave a faint smile. "Relax, all we did was scare her a little during the capture. Nothing more than that. Just do as I say, and your girlfriend will return to your side unharmed."

"Can I trust you?" Gu Fan tried to keep his anger in check, aware that violence couldn’t solve the present predicament.

The big boss smirked condescendingly, "I always keep my word. Besides, it seems you don’t have many options." And with that, he straightened Gu Fan’s clothes and gave him a pat on the shoulder - a gesture suggesting he was leaving Gu Fan to his fate.

Gu Fan clenched his fists, restraining himself from pouncing on the big boss. He then watched helplessly as the big boss swayed away with arrogance.

Suddenly, something occurred to Gu Fan, and he asked, "I’ve heard that you were the first person the Eternal life Clan ever granted the immortality they’d striven so hard to achieve. Why did you exterminate the entire clan?"

The big boss stopped in his tracks upon hearing this. Turning around dispassionately, his eyes were filled with resentment. "Because they didn’t deserve it. Those selfish creatures, dreaming of eternal youth, should pay for their deeds. They deserve to vanish from this world. That’s why I killed them all with my bare hands. Not a single one left." He was seething, his hatred for the Eternal life Clan apparent.

Gu Fan furrowed his brows, sensing something. "Since you were the first to achieve immortality, were you just a guinea pig for the Eternal life Clan?"

With a sardonic laugh, the big boss retorted, "Gu Fan, you’re clever. You located Qianye Country, you can find that place before Lin Xi. Even without the blueprint, you can follow Qian Ye’s trail. We have your girlfriend’s phone too, so you know how to contact me. Don’t try anything funny, or you’ll regret it." Having said that, he strode off without a backward glance.

Gu Fan stood there in a stunned silence. More than Leng Le’s abduction or Lin Xi’s betrayal, he was more intrigued by the bitter story hidden behind the cold brutality of the big boss.

Gu Fan hypothesized that since the Eternal life Clan had been pursuing immortality for ages, using a myriad of methods, they must have endured many failures. Each failure would have resulted in casualties. Often, those who were privileged weren’t the ones sacrificed, those of lower status were used as experimental subjects. Those at the bottom didn’t matter to anyone. This must be why the big boss hated the Eternal Life Clan, or there could be another reason.

With a sigh, Gu Fan murmured, "The poor Eternal Life Clan, struggled for immortality only for their achievement to lead to their entire clan’s annihilation. How ironic."

"Lin Xi, oh Lin Xi, you’ve really made me furious." Gu Fan tried hard to calm himself down, but the memory of being used and then abandoned by Lin Xi was like a wound being ripped open. He couldn’t restrain his anger. He was furious and swore that he’d catch up with Lin Xi, even without the map, he was determined to seek justice for himself.

"Luckily, I’m not easily fooled." Gu Fan closed his eyes, trying to recall the complete blueprint: what kind of a landscape did it depict, the mountain, etc.

A good memory is inferior to a bad pen. Gu Fan quickly picked up a pen and paper, jotting down everything he could remember. With a cold laugh, he muttered, "Lin Xi, dreaming that by taking the blueprint, I won’t be able to catch up. Keep dreaming."
