Those Classmates who Suddenly Disappeared
Chapter 216 Serious Warning

Chapter 216: Chapter 216 Serious Warning

Upon mention of risk, Zhuo Hang frowned, "The deeper we get into this investigation, the more we know, and the larger the threat we pose to them. That means we are their risk. Imagine what they would do to eliminate us."

After hearing this, Su Hui replied with a coy smile, "What’s wrong? You’re not scared, are you?"

"Scared? I have been a cop for so many years, and I’ve weathered all kinds of storms. When I took on this case, I knew what I was getting myself into." After speaking, Zhuo Hang looked directly at Su Hui, and said solemnly, "No matter what we discover, we will report it to our superiors immediately. Even if they try to remove us from the equation, our superiors will just bring in others to investigate. What I’m worried about now is the safety of some other people."

Su Hui’s expression changed, "You mean Gu Fan and the others?"

Zhuo Hang nodded, "Yes, many of the current leads were discovered by Gu Fan. This young man could pose even a bigger threat to that mysterious force than us. I’m afraid they may come after him."

"Yes, the risk is indeed higher. After all, Gu Fan does not possess the skills and ability to defend himself like I do," Su Hui said, lost in thought about minimizing everyone’s risks.

A secret investigation would reduce the risk by keeping the enemy in the dark about how much we actually know. Still, this didn’t guarantee safety as the adversary’s intelligence network was unimaginably vast.

Just as Su Hui felt her worries grow, Zhuo Hang came over, took her hand gently, and comfortingly said with a smile, "Don’t worry too much. We should do our best in our duties and leave the rest to fate. If fate has drawn Gu Fan and the others into this, there must be a reason."

Su Hui also smiled, laying her head on Zhuo Hang’s shoulder. Amidst the hard work and tremendous pressure, Su Hui found solace and peace in Zhuo Hang’s company.

After a while, Zhuo Hang escorted Su Hui back home, reminding her to rest. Su Hui agreed and obliged.

As she opened her door to a pitch-dark house, it was apparent that Gu Fan hadn’t returned yet. She dialled Gu Fan’s cell only to be met with silence. With no response after several tries, Su Hui’s gut told her that something was amiss.

"You’ve got to be kidding me. I was just worrying that something might happen, and now it seems to have come true," Su Hui murmured anxiously, images of a roadside assault on Gu Fan surfacing in her mind.

Meanwhile, Gu Fan was indeed in trouble. After he’d finished up his date and parted ways with Leng Le, he was attacked in a small patch of woods in the park. Currently, a huge man had his hands wrapped tightly around Gu Fan’s neck.

Hai, using a voice changer, warned, "Kid, we know you’ve got guts, but some things are none of your business. Stay in school and be a normal person; that’s what suits you best."

"Thanks for the advice. I’d love nothing more than to accept it. We inadvertently messed up your plans before, and I didn’t think you’d let that go easily. Now it’s settled, we’ll each mind our own business," Gu Fan, well aware that he couldn’t stand a chance against Hai’s superior strength and numbers, considered himself lucky to still be alive.

"As long as you don’t cause trouble, we’ll let bygones be bygones. But you need to tell us how you found the leads," Hai tightened his grip around Gu Fan’s neck as a warning that this was not a hollow threat and that Gu Fan should confess or bear the consequences.

Feeling uncomfortable, Gu Fan replied promptly, "Alright. I’ll tell. Ask me anything, and I’ll give you everything I know."

Hai let out a cold grunt," We dumped a guy in the ocean earlier. How did you save him?"

"You may not believe it, but one of us happened to be passing by and saw Old Xing. Hence, we saved him," Gu Fan believed that there was no point in lying about this, so he told the truth.

"A coincidence?" Hai wasn’t convinced but was taken aback when Gu Fan said, "My God, you throw a man in the ocean without giving us a heads up, so how could we know and be waiting there on purpose? It was merely a coincidence."

"Well, let’s chalk it up to coincidence, then. So, how exactly did you find the factory? And don’t tell me it was another coincidence," an annoyed Hai added more pressure to Gu Fan’s neck, warning him not to lie.

But Gu Fan managed to utter, "Could you please loosen your grip a bit? I can hardly breathe."

"Fine, but you better be honest with me," Hai slightly loosened his grip, looking forward to Gu Fan’s answer.

After deep breaths and regaining composure, Gu Fan finally said, "It’s simple. When we discovered that Lu Yi was kidnapped, I used the route she usually takes to go back home and then asked Su Hui to pull surveillance footage to look for leads, and that’s how we found your hiding place."

Hearing this, Hai tightened his grip around Gu Fan’s neck again, "Liar! If you had accessed surveillance footage, our insiders at the police station would have tipped us off."

"Are you sure everyone in the police station is on your side?" Gu Fan’s words immediately sent a chill down Hai’s spine, his grip unconsciously loosening, giving Gu Fan a chance to breathe.

Indeed, as Gu Fan had pointed out, although many in the police station were colluding with Hai, Leng Le, and the big boss, the large number of people meant a larger risk of exposure, so they only controlled key positions, and a portion of the rank-and-file police, other officers were difficult to control.

"Let’s put that aside for now, what did you learn from Old Xing?" This is what Hai and Leng Le cared about most, if Gu Fan recognized Old Xing as the one who caused trouble for Leng Le at the amusement park, then Gu Fan would definitely suspect Leng Le.

After some time spent together, Leng Le had not noticed anything unusual about Gu Fan and didn’t know whether Gu Fan was sincerely ignorant or feigning it.

Gu Fan responded, "After this guy was rescued, my friend arranged for him to stay in the unfinished building. I didn’t find out until later. By the time I went to see Old Xing, he was already delusional and couldn’t answer any questions. Old Xing was taken by you guys and you must have noticed his mental instability."

Hai agreed with this. When they first took Old Xing away, they too had noticed his mental instability. But Hai still worried, "Do you know Old Xing’s identity?"

Gu Fan shook his head, "We hadn’t figured out his identity yet when you guys took him away."

Hai continued to probe, "Had you seen Old Xing before?"

Gu Fan firmly replied, "No, I hadn’t. The first time I saw Old Xing was after your attack on the police vehicle. The second time was right after, when you guys showed up again."

But Hai was still not reassured, demanding in an intimidating tone, "You never saw him before?"

Hearing this, Gu Fan made a bitter face, "Mate, please, Old Xing, looking neither human nor ghost, raggedy as he is, even if I had seen him before, I wouldn’t recognize him now."

Hai frowned. Indeed when they captured Old Xing the second time, Hai almost didn’t recognize him, so Gu Fan’s words made sense.

"Alright, next question, how did you know where we took Du Jun?" Hai thought they handled it covertly, so he was puzzled how they could have been tracked down.

Not just Hai, even Leng Le and the big boss were worried. If they couldn’t figure out how Gu Fan did it, they would lose sleep over it.

Gu Fan paused a moment, then said, "Actually, after the silencing incident, there was a change amongst your guys, they became scared, and so secretly contacted us, letting us know where Du Jun had been taken."

"What? You’re telling the truth?" Not just Hai, but his subordinates were shocked as well. They all understood the implications. Internal turmoil was often scarier than external attacks.

Gu Fan nodded, "Yes, but this person didn’t reveal his identity, he just contacts us at the right time."

Hai knew the situation was serious and desperately needed the truth, "Quick, tell me how he contacts you."

"I don’t know the details because I’m not a police officer, so your guys don’t trust me. He contacts someone from the police," Gu Fan honestly answered, but he was playing a deeper game. He wanted them to doubt their subordinates. As long as they felt they couldn’t identify the mole, they wouldn’t dare to act rashly.

At this point, Gu Fan decided to push back, "I also want to ask you, how did you know that Lu Yi filmed your attack on the police vehicle? I remember Lu Yi saying he was wearing a helmet, so you shouldn’t have recognized him. And why did you seem to know we were coming when we got close to that factory and your men quickly retreated?"

"You shouldn’t ask questions that are none of your business. Don’t ask too much. We will spare you today, but if you dare interfere next time, don’t blame us for not showing mercy," After saying this, Hai let go of Gu Fan.

"Thank you, boss. I’ll change for sure," Gu Fan pretended to be very exhausted and gasped for breath, but internally he started to calculate. Once they left, Gu Fan got up.

Their faces were completely covered with hoodies, glasses, and masks, but Gu Fan had his ways. During the previous fight, knowing he couldn’t win, he deliberately left a mark, a punch at the glasses. The impact made the glasses rub against the skin leaving some traces. All he had to do was find them before the marks faded.

"Phew, that was close," Gu Fan, having narrowly escaped death, let out a sigh of relief. He had truly cheated death this time and should cherish his life more, vowing not to interfere again. What a hassle! But upon thinking it over, Gu Fan scoffed at himself, because he already knew the answer to that.

At the same time, Gu Fan was wondering, how did they know his return route and set up an ambush in advance?
