Those Classmates who Suddenly Disappeared -
Chapter 215: Found You
Chapter 215: Chapter 215: Found You
That day when Gao Lu from the identification bureau was going home after work, Su Hui suddenly appeared while he was starting the car, knocking on the passenger-side door.
Gao Lu was confused. He lowered the window and asked, "What’s up, gorgeous? Need anything?"
"Sorry to bother you, but my car has broken down. It’s hard to find a taxi at this time and I need to go somewhere urgently. Can you give me a ride?" Su Hui was pleading, making it challenging for Gao Lu; he wanted to go straight home.
But considering Su Hui’s beauty, Gao Lu thought, just this once, and agreed, opening the passenger door.
"Thank you! You’re really helping me out." Su Hui expressed her gratitude, then told Gao Lu to take her to a large shopping plaza not far from his home, so it wouldn’t be much out of his way.
While driving, Gao Lu spoke, "I didn’t expect our police beauty to grace my car with her presence today, quite a pleasant surprise."
Once again, Su Hui thanked him and said, "I noticed something wrong with my car. Then I saw you coming, and in my rush, I grabbed the first person I saw. Sorry for the trouble."
"It’s not too much trouble, or perhaps you’re just unlucky, but I’m fortunate," Gao Lu replied with a soft laugh. Any colleague in their right mind would take a second glance at Su Hui.
Su Hui chuckled and remarked, "When I was a detective at the branch, I was always taking various items to the colleagues in the identification bureau. We interacted a lot, and the relations were good. It seems the heavens are saying I have a special connection with the identification bureau."
"Really? I never expected to get lucky with a beauty in the identification bureau." Gao Lu couldn’t help laughing, then added, "You’re doing administrative work now. It seems more suitable for you. You don’t look like a person who can fight, but I’ve heard your skills are good."
Su Hui laughed awkwardly, "I am decent enough. I guess my colleagues in the branch are just not quite there yet, so I have been undefeated."
"Oh, that’s amazing." Gao Lu looked at Su Hui with admiration. As he watched her beautiful profile, he was feeling something unusual.
Suddenly, Su Hui pointed to the side of the road and said, "My friend is over there. Pull up."
"Okay!" As Gao Lu pulled up as instructed, he recognized the person waiting by the side of the road. Isn’t that Zhuo Hang?
Zhuo Hang quickly got into the car, showing a grateful expression, "Thank you, Gao Lu. You’ve done us a huge favor."
"Really? You’re welcome." Gao Lu felt strange inside, a creeping unease set in, but he forced himself to remain calm and keep the car moving steadily.
"I remember your housing complex isn’t far from here. Let’s go there to park." After saying this, Su Hui turned around and smiled at Zhuo Hang. He responded in kind, and there seemed to be some depth to their exchange of looks.
Gao Lu noticed everything. He knew this wasn’t a coincidence, but rather a deliberate setup. However, why had Su Hui and Zhuo Hang suddenly set their sights on him?
"Stay calm, stay calm, it’s okay," Gao Lu kept telling himself, but his palms were already sweaty and he was even shaking a little.
Unable to withstand the pressure any longer, Gao Lu finally blurted out, "What are you doing in my housing complex? If nothing else, I can let you out here."
Zhuo Hang snorted coldly, "We’re going to your housing complex for your safety. If we stop here with so many people coming and going, it wouldn’t be good if somebody saw us. We’re not getting off easily, you better think it over."
Gao Lu put on an outraged face, "What do you want, don’t push it too far."
Neither Su Hui nor Zhuo Hang responded. So Gao Lu quickly parked the car by the road and ordered them out. "Please get out of the car now. Did you hear me?"
Su Hui looked indifferent and showed Gao Lu a video on her phone. It was footage of someone shoving something into his car the last time he went home.
"What’s this? So, someone gave me something, so what?" Gao Lu tried to deny it with a dismissive attitude, but his face revealed slight panic.
Zhuo Hang intensified his tone, "Actually, your housing complex is relatively safe. Since you want to talk here, let’s talk here."
"We’ve nothing to talk about. Please get out of the car immediately," Gao Lu demanded again, but Zhuo Hang and Su Hui remained unmoved. This agitated Gao Lu, who then said, "If you don’t leave, then I will."
Su Hui, quick as lightning, handcuffed Gao Lu’s hand to the steering wheel, leaving him unable to leave.
It was then that Zhuo Hang began to interrogate, "I’m asking you a few questions in private now. No one else knows, so there’s room for manoeuvre. If you don’t cooperate, I will have to interrogate you publicly, and you’ll have to bear the consequences."
Hearing what was said, Gao Lu was dripping with cold sweat, knowing he couldn’t avoid the situation, he toughened up: "Ask, what do you want to know?"
Su Hui was the first to ask: "Earlier, my two friends saved a man named Old Xing, but due to extreme shock, Old Xing was incoherent and we didn’t know who he was. However, his fingerprints on the mineral water bottle, analyzed through a comparison, could tell us his identity. Yet, you told me the bottle didn’t have Old Xing’s fingerprints."
Gao Lu was certain: "There were no fingerprints."
"Oh, is that so?" Su Hui didn’t believe him, she continued: "But not long after, Old Xing was murdered by a group of people, then we saw you receiving a package."
Gao Lu hurried to explain: "I was always working in the office, what does a murder have to do with me? And what’s wrong with my friend giving me a bag of local specialties?"
Zhuo Hang coldly said: "Oh, what friend? Can you tell us?"
"That’s my privacy." Gao Lu refused, sweat rolled down his forehead.
Zhuo Hang’s tone turned heavier: "Privacy, is it? Don’t make me interrogate you through official means, then everyone will know you’re in trouble."
"This... is an old friend of mine, a high school classmate, his name is..." Gao Lu stumbled and stuttered, obviously lying.
Su Hui showed Gao Lu a second video, of a bread truck driving into a dilapidated factory, she calmly said: "After last time when we saw someone handing you a package, we didn’t continue to follow you. Instead, we changed our target and ended up at this dilapidated, nearly abandoned factory. Do you recognize this place?"
Gao Lu quickly shook his head: "I do not know, I’ve never been there."
Zhuo Hang interjected: "Then you should have heard about it. I, along with the higher-ups, caught the suspects. Later, we were attacked on the highway. Do you know where those three suspects were caught? It’s that dilapidated factory. Can you explain it to me now?"
"I... I..." Gao Lu was speechless and utterly disoriented.
Su Hui continued to question: "The group caught in the factory were the ones who killed Old Xing. Now, why did they give you a package? Why is it that not long after I gave you the mineral water bottle with Old Xing’s fingerprints, Old Xing was killed by these people? Give me a reasonable explanation."
Gao Lu couldn’t meet their gaze, he breathed a deep breath, but remained silent.
Zhuo Hang shook his head: "It’s futile for you to remain silent, Gao Lu. You should understand the consequences of being targeted by us. Think about how those people silenced others, you don’t want to be their next target, do you?"
"Please spare me, I just want to get through each day safely," Gao Lu begged with his voice shaking, "I can’t afford to offend them, I have a family, I don’t want any trouble."
Su Hui coldly said: "What is it about having a family? Don’t others have families too? You’re a policeman, your duty is to protect the people. And you ended up tipping off the criminals, leading to Old Xing’s death. Are you worthy of the uniform?"
Zhuo Hang also accused: "Every year many of our colleagues die on duty, didn’t they all have families too? Not only are you a coward, but you also led to the death of someone you were supposed to protect."
"I didn’t want to... I just wanted to survive..." Gao Lu cried, hitting his steering wheel in regret.
Seeing Gao Lu like this, Su Hui sighed: "If it’s for the sake of salary or raising a family, there are plenty of professions to choose from. Why be a policeman? Once you wear this uniform, you should be prepared. How do you deserve to be a policeman like this?"
"I want to be a good cop, too, but..." Gao Lu implored with a desperate expression, begging repeatedly: "Please, please don’t pressure me anymore, please..."
Zhuo Hang nodded: "Fine, we won’t pressure you tonight. Please keep quiet about tonight’s matter. You wouldn’t want them to silence you, would you?"
"Okay, I understand," Gao Lu felt as if he had been spared, his emotions finally stabilized.
Zhuo Hang got out of the car first. When Su Hui got out, she solemnly looked at Gao Lu, warning him: "Remember, we’re only sparing you for tonight. The matter isn’t over, I’ll give you one night to think about whether you want to be an accessory to evil or if you want to do what we should be doing and take responsibility. Once your secret is exposed, you won’t have other options."
Upon hearing those words, Gao Lu was stunned for a moment, he then pulled himself together and drove away.
Watching Gao Lu leave, Zhuo Hang asked with concern: "Do you think this guy will agree to help us?"
Su Hui replied lightly: "If he agrees, he still has a chance to redeem himself, but if he doesn’t, he’ll be silenced like the others. The gang’s tactics don’t allow for any risk."
