Those Classmates who Suddenly Disappeared
Chapter 165: How Many Ranks of Officials

Chapter 165: Chapter 165: How Many Ranks of Officials

Su Hui has been studying at the city’s police headquarters for almost a month now, absorbing a wealth of knowledge. She felt eager to put her new skills into practice and return to her post as soon as possible. However, her superiors were hesitant to let her leave, leaving her baffled. How long was this closed training supposed to last? It had already been almost a month, was the higher-ups planning on keeping her cooped up here indefinitely?

Soon, Su Hui received a transfer notice claiming that she was talented with immense potential, and should express her talents where she was needed more—implying a relocation to another city.

Su Hui was stunned. Clearly, they were trying to remove her from the picture, preventing her involvement—but why? Hadn’t that matter already been resolved? Unless they had other plans.

She wondered, were they trying to get her out of the way to harm Gu Fan? Then, shouldn’t she certainly refuse to leave?

So, Su Hui turned down the offer. She explained that she had attended university in this city and had no desire to leave, willing to dedicate her youth here.

Of course, the higher-ups did not force her to move to another city, but demanded she stayed at the headquarters rather than returning to her previous bureau. And they were quite adamant about it; she had to obey their arrangements.

Su Hui had no option but to compromise. Last time, they transferred her from criminal police to civic police, and now they moved her from the bureau to the headquarters—step by step, they seemed to hinder her from interfering in some hidden agenda.

The area where Gu Fan lived and his school used to be under the jurisdiction of Su Hui’s bureau. Moving her out entirely indicated a clear intention—if anything happened, she wouldn’t be able to take control of the case immediately.

Su Hui hoped she was overthinking. Even if she couldn’t handle it directly, she still lived near Gu Fan. She wasn’t entirely helpless.

But what troubled Su Hui was the extent of the hidden forces behind all this. They had connections even inside the police headquarters and could easily transfer positions at will.

Now Su Hui’s adversaries weren’t just the people behind the scenes, but also the higher-ups. Power crushes beneath its weight, and she knew she couldn’t stand against them. When confronted with a problem, she thought of Yuan Cheng.

She glanced at her phone several times, mustering up the courage to call him but abandoning it each time. She wanted to rely on her own strength, reduce her dependency on Yuan Cheng. However, when she came across such an insurmountable problem, only Yuan Cheng could handle it.

But every time Su Hui thought back to how Yuan Cheng didn’t offer his help last time she approached him, it infuriated her. She had swallowed her pride and sought his help, but he didn’t even lift a finger to assist her.

Just as Su Hui was losing interest, a familiar car drove into the closed training base. The plate number was also familiar, and the man who stepped out was no stranger—it was Yuan Cheng.

Yuan Cheng spotted Su Hui, gave a small smile, and walked straight towards her. "I heard you were transferred here for training, and you’ll be working at the headquarters afterwards. That’s a great opportunity. Congratulations," he greeted.

"No need for congratulations. Although I am quite satisfied with this arrangement, I would prefer to return to the bureau," Su Hui replied, then her expression changed, and she gave Yuan Cheng a suspicious look. She asked, "You didn’t have anything to do with this, did you? Getting the headquarters to move me here?"

Yuan Cheng immediately shook his head: "No, absolutely not. I know what you want. I suggested a long time ago moving you to the headquarters, but you refused. I never brought it up again."

"Really, it wasn’t you?" Su Hui looked at him with furrowed brows, appearing deep in thought.

Yuan Cheng tried to reassure her, "True talent will always shine. Your abilities were recognized by the bureau a long time ago. You didn’t need my help for that. It was only a matter of time before you were transferred to headquarters."

"You’re right, but having me here in administration doesn’t exactly play to my strengths," Su Hui confessed. She detested the idea of having to deal with a pile of headache-inducing paperwork. She’d much rather be out there combating criminals.

Yuan Cheng then added, "I think administrative work suits you ladies better. Let the real men handle the brunt of it. What would they do if you took their jobs?"

Upon hearing this, Su Hui squinted at Yuan Cheng, then started laughing, a hint of mischief in her eyes. The sight made Yuan Cheng slightly nervous, unsure of what she was plotting.

With his years of experience dealing with her, Yuan Cheng laughed nervously, "You’re not going to ask me to use my influence to transfer you to the criminal police, are you?"

"You know me so well. Thanks," Su Hui replied, acting very grateful, which made Yuan Cheng feel rather awkward. He had only stopped by to check on Su Hui and hadn’t expected to be asked for a favor.

Yuan Cheng certainly has the ability to do so as a simple matter of making a phone call, but the problem is that his fiancee Liu Yao disapproves of Yuan Cheng still being preoccupied with Su Hui. This puts Yuan Cheng in a difficult position.

That’s right, Yuan Cheng is from a wealthy family with a well-matched fiancee who also comes from a wealthy background. Liu Yao would know what Yuan Cheng did for Su Hui and how he did it, and once a woman becomes jealous, it’s a big deal.

"It’s not impossible, but I don’t want to overly interfere with the decisions of the Police Department," said Yuan Cheng, looking distressed. He was unable to help Su Hui last time, and he can’t help her this time either. How disappointed she must be in him.

"Alright then, I understand. I won’t put you in a difficult position anymore. I seem to be destined for hardship, so I’ve accepted it." Su Hui said, then turned away, uninterested in interacting with Yuan Cheng anymore, leaving him feeling awkward.

Yuan Cheng just wanted to check on Su Hui and see how she was doing, but the situation had changed. It seemed as if he no longer meant anything to Su Hui.

"Okay, even though it’s a bit difficult, I’ll try my best." Yuan Cheng could only reluctantly promise, although he couldn’t make any guarantees. After all, getting around his fiancee was difficult.

"Alright, thank you." Su Hui thanked Yuan Cheng reserve, then made small talk before quietly watching Yuan Cheng leave. A certain feeling surfaced again in her heart. She thought she had let go, but she couldn’t help but feel a bit reluctant when she saw Yuan Cheng again.

Just as Su Hui was preparing to return to her dormitory, she suddenly received an order. The newly adjusted Director of the police Department wanted to see her and asked her to come over quickly.

Su Hui was shocked. Why would the newly appointed director want to meet with her? Is this to exert more pressure on her? Oh God, Su Hui doesn’t believe she can withstand such a high-ranking official’s pressure.

Whether or not she wants to go, Su Hui had to. So she braced herself and went, knocking on the door of the office. After obtaining permission, she walked in with a nervous heart.

"Director!" Su Hui spoke with utmost caution, not daring to say an extra word. Even from a distance, she could feel his authoritative presence.

"Sit down, don’t be so formal," said the Director, showing no emotion, staring intently at Su Hui. The Director seemed to be judging whether she had any tricks up her sleeve, which was making Su Hui feel nervous.

Sensing that the situation was not good, Su Hui composed herself and said, "I am not sure why the Director wanted to see me."

The Director pulled out a file on Su Hui and said seriously, "I have looked through the files of every student at this training base. Su Hui, you are truly outstanding. You’ve solved countless cases, and you’re a rare talent with a promising future."

"Thank you for your high praise, Director. This is what I should be doing as a police officer." Su Hui felt even greater pressure, completely devoid of any happiness from being praised.

Then, the Director became stern: "Su Hui, you are indeed talented. But regardless of how excellent you are, you need to obey the organization’s arrangements. To be a police officer doesn’t necessarily mean being a detective. We all have different roles to perform for our country and our people. Do you think that whenever there’s a case, I should also rush to the frontline?"

Without hesitation, Su Hui shook her head: "No, no, no. Director, you have a million things to deal with. There are so many important matters that need your attention. How could you manage if you had to personally handle everything?"

"That’s right, isn’t it?" The Director slammed his hand on the table, a slight look of anger in his face. "Apart from serving the country and the people, policemen must also respect discipline and obedience. If you are dissatisfied with the job transfer, you can voice out. The higher-ups will consider it. But ultimately, you have to comply with the arrangement. Every position is important and tests a person’s abilities. I know about your past relationship with Yuan Cheng, but I do not want you to use it to achieve your own ends and disrupt the discipline and obedience within the police force. Do you understand what I mean?"

The pressure was immense. Su Hui immediately nodded in fear, "I understand, I understand. I will abide by the arrangement, I was wrong and I will correct it immediately. Knowing and correcting one’s own mistakes is a sign of a good comrade. Thank you, Director, for your guidance."

The Director finally calmed down and satisfied with Su Hui’s response, said: "There’s one more month of closed-door training left, you still have a lot to learn. The headquarters value someone like you and we hope you will not disappoint."

"What? There’s still another month?" said Su Hui, looking upset. But catching the Director’s gaze, she immediately pulled herself together and hurriedly promised to study hard, strive for improvement, and upon completion, to serve her country and her people even better.

"That’s it, this is the kind of ideological consciousness we want." Under the Director’s gesture, Su Hui left the office. The first thing she did was to send a message to Yuan Cheng, asking him not to help anymore.

Well, this move by them has cut off Su Hui’s inclination to turn to Yuan Cheng whenever she encounters difficulties. It seems that for now, she can only honestly do administrative work at the Police Department.

"One more month, Gu Fan, you have to hold on." For the first time, Su Hui felt how helpless it was to confront an unseen, evil, and potent force. At the same time, she silently worried for Gu Fan. Little did she know that Gu Fan was already warmly engaged with Leng Le. Their relationship was rapidly warming up. The reason the opposition separated Su Hui was to facilitate Leng Le’s approach to Gu Fan and win him over.
