Chapter 1441: Chapter 1441: People from a Distant Era
Gu Fan had no idea how much time had passed when he slowly awoke, feeling as if a very long period had elapsed. Yet, he discovered that his eyes were covered, blinding him to his surroundings.
"You’re awake!" came a voice as cold as if it were a machine.
Gu Fan was startled, not knowing whether he was in the hands of friend or foe. He decided it was best to be polite for now. So he said, "Hello there, big brother. I had no choice but to intrude into your abode; I apologize for any offense. Rest assured, I will help you clean the floor."
The cold voice spoke again, "You are special."
Gu Fan quickly agreed, "Right, right, right. Everyone has their own unique quality; each person is an independent individual in this world. You have such insight, big brother."
"That’s not what I mean," said the cold voice. A hand as cold as ice then pressed against Gu Fan’s face.
Gu Fan was surprised, as the coldness was unlike that of any human hand.
The cold voice added another sentence, "You carry the energy of the Destiny Stone. It seems that you have been chosen by the Destiny Stone to complete our ancient Super Civilization’s mission."
Upon hearing this, Gu Fan was even more astonished. The content of the other party’s speech suggested a possible connection to the ancient Super Civilization. So Gu Fan asked, "What mission, may I ask, big brother, do you have with the ancient Super Civilization?"
The cold voice chuckled, "Do you want to know what I look like?"
Gu Fan shivered inside, growing somewhat afraid, "Will there be consequences if I know what you look like?"
"Do you think I would harm you?" Following this statement, a device covering Gu Fan’s eyes was moved away.
Gu Fan could now see what the person in front of him looked like. He was of average height, with profound eyes and handsome, extraordinary appearance. However, his expression was filled with coldness. Most importantly, his ears were very pointed, somewhat like the elves of legend.
"This big brother couldn’t be from the ancient Super Civilization, could you? You are both young and good-looking," Gu Fan said, maintaining a friendly demeanor—there was no helping it, his life was in the other’s hands.
"According to your human terminology, my name can be temporarily translated as Ao Sai." The man’s voice maintained its frigid tone—a tone devoid of any emotion, as if it were output by a machine following a pre-set program. Even the artificial intelligences created by the ancient Super Civilization didn’t speak like this.
Still trying to ingratiate himself, Gu Fan said, "Hello, big brother Ao Sai. I am not clear on the meaning behind tying me up. We shouldn’t have any grudges between us, right?"
Ao Sai looked coldly at Gu Fan, making his heart feel hairy. Gu Fan thought to himself, what does this big brother mean by this?
Then, Ao Sai added, "I don’t know why the Destiny Stone chose you, but since you’ve come here, I must help you complete your mission."
"The mission, can you be more specific?" Gu Fan was growing nervous. This was the enigma that had baffled him for so long—what exactly did the Destiny Stone want him to do?
However, to Gu Fan’s disappointment, Ao Sai gave only a vague response, "Now is not the time to tell you."
"Are such good confidentiality measures really necessary?" Gu Fan put on a disheartened expression.
Ao Sai didn’t need to do anything—a screen descended from the ceiling in front of Gu Fan, as if it was about to show him something important.
Gu Fan stared at the screen with wide eyes, knowing that crucial information awaited him.
The screen lit up, showing scenes of the ancient Super Civilization’s daily life. Their city, built entirely of metal, soared into the clouds while giving off an impregnable, unbreakable vibe.
Their habitats allowed them to adjust the seasons at will, and their clothes adapted to the climate for warmth or cooling.
Their transportation vehicles could leap instantly between two points—every aspect was brimming with a sense of technology, far surpassing this world.
"This life is too good," Gu Fan could barely believe his eyes, wishing he could live in a world like that.
However, the scene shifted: war broke out, destroying cities, annihilating lives. Civilization after civilization turned to ruins, leaving only weeping and ultimately, even the weeping turned to dust and smoke.
The world of the ancient Super Civilization was left grievously damaged, ravaged and scarred, with the climate rapidly deteriorating, energy depleted, and the environment becoming so harsh that survival was uncertain and rebuilding a home seemed improbable.
In a last act of desperation, the ancient Super Civilization boarded their space ships and left this place, searching for a new home in the vastness of space.
Pretending to be dismayed, Gu Fan said, "Such a beautiful world, what a pity it’s ruined. That’s why peace is important, right? Couldn’t you have just sat down and talked things out?"
Ao Sai replied, "When some people become greedy, full of arrogance and pride, it becomes impossible to prevent them from making stupid decisions."
"Indeed, the struggle between people has never ceased," Gu Fan had to admit. The difference lay in whether it was a mere squabble or a devastation that could destroy heavens and earth.
Ao Sai spoke again, "War is not what will lead us to extinction. Even if we act foolishly, it will not be the foolishness of starting a war that would lead the ancient Super Civilization to destruction."
"Right!" Gu Fan thought there was sense in this. He looked back at the screen and then he understood, "It was the destruction of the environment, the over-exploitation of resources, that led the ancient Super Civilization to decline."
"Yes," Ao Sai replied, glancing at the screen, which now shifted to display three experimental bases.
Continuing, Ao Sai said, "Our ancient Super Civilization did not want to give up our home. In order to survive in this world, we began a study to improve our physiques, a body that could adapt to any harsh living environment."
"Immortality," Gu Fan blurted out.
"Correct, only with an immortal physique could we keep living. Unfortunately, we couldn’t last until the experiment was complete, and we had to leave," Ao Sai responded.
Gu Fan was puzzled, "Perfect immortality, becoming zombies, Sea Ghosts, vampires, stone men, transferring life force—you guys really researched everything."
"You’ve missed one out," Ao Sai said, and with that, he grabbed and pulled off the skin on his face, revealing the metal underneath.
Gu Fan was profoundly shocked, "You are a robot."
As Ao Sai stretched out his arm, he replied, "To be accurate, I am a Life Robot. I was once flesh and blood, but after the transformation, I became like this—a perfect fusion of biology and machinery."
"Amazing..." Gu Fan was at a loss for words. The ancient Super Civilization had truly gone to great lengths in pursuit of immortality.
